I use this book at work (Drug and Alcohol Rehab) weekly, and it is always easy and fast to find the information I need, when I need it. During my internship, I did a book report on this book, and I loved it so much I bought this updated version. It is very easy-read, and it gives a very neutral, unbiased view of the most used and abused substances. The book has a section in the middle that shows pictures of different drugs, and ways hey are being prepared. The only (very slight) detail I would change, is the paper quality of the book. It's in a matte white on the cover, and when using it often, it tends to get a bit dirty, whereas if it had a glossy finish, it might stay clean longer :) I highly recommend this book.

Exceptionally useful discussion of a wide range of substances and how they affect and usually damage a person's body. I work with parents whose children have been removed by the state social services, frequently as a result of alleged substance abuse. Anyone who works with people who have drug abuse problems can benefit greatly from the discussion of how a person's brain is physically changed by various chemicals. This book makes abundantly clear that stopping the use of many drugs is a helluva lot more difficult than "Just Say No." I had many moments reading this book where I thought "Unbelievable!" Example: a human's brain has cells specifically designed to bond with cannabis molecules. I plan to read this book more than once. The main criticism I have is that I would have preferred a more extensive discussion of the huge drug testing industry, particularly how false positives can occur. I have no doubt that there are many people who are in jail or prison because of a positive drug test which may have been the result of someone actually using drugs or the result of a technician not cleaning the testing equipment properly.

Overall, this book was insightful with good information. However, because it explains many aspects of so many drugs, the book does not go into depth or great detail on any of them. Honestly, the information given in the book can be found with a 15 minute internet search. Good overall information, but very limited.

I would recommend this to anyone that wants more information about substances of abuse, how they work, side effects and long term effects. I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner and ended up having to,witch to our detox unit with limited knowledge. This book has been a great help.

It depends on what your expectations are of this book. The book is literally filled with a lot of details about several different classes of drugs. The book talks about the history, usage, symptoms, and more about many different drugs. The book almost seems like a mini encyclopedia on drugs.

I had to get this as a textbook, but it's quickly become one of my absolute favorite textbooks. It is so informative, but easy to read. The authors did a great job of providing details without overwhelming the reader. I highly recommend.

I have a BA in neuroscience and I found this book to be incredibly interesting. I learned a lot about various classes of drugs, addiction and the law. I recommend this book for everyone in their teens to early twenties.

as an 86 year old happily practicing catholic, I suddenly realized years ago I had no knowledge of the old testament. I felt the new testament revoked the old testament. I repeat little did I know.mr. Limbaugh constructed this book magnificently. I see clearly that the material he provides undoubtedly links the old testament with jesus.I will reveal none of what I read. maybe the material is difficult for an 86 year old to retain ,but everything I needed to know has been confirmed.those of you not inclined to spiritual reading, give this a try. but say a silent prayer before each reading session.

I wish I had waiting to order this until I'd listened to the first audiobook I bought by this author. His work is excellent; very interesting and extremely well researched, but the massive scripture references he lists are lost to the listener unless s/he is able to jot them down (very quickly!). Had I "read" either book I bought in audio format, I would have purchased any other by Mr. Limbaugh in a paper edition or Kindle.

AFTER reading through several dozen pages I'm impressed with this book. The Emmaus Road encounter is familiar to me because of a group study through my church in 1998 on the subject. Recently I have been making my own study through the Old Testament seeking new insight by the power of the Holy Spirit into the Emmaus Road encounter. Looking forward to finishing it and comparing my own notes to what Limbaugh has written.

Concise and understandable review of the Christ-centered redemption story in both the Old and New Testament. One God, one supernaturally-revealed, unified account of His provision for us. All roads point to the one glorious Truth.

The book is written in a very readable style that would be useful to the average person. It is not for theologically trained readers only. Even so, I find it to be a very thorough review of Old Testament content and it's relationship to the New Testament Scriptures, and the Messiah that was pointed to in Old Testament times and fulfilled by Jesus in New testament times. The theology is Calvinist, which focuses first on the sovereignty of God, but the grace of God accessed by God-given faith also comes out in the discussions. I am an emeritus Lutheran Pastor, still actively serving a small congregation. I plan to order a hard-back version in addition to the Kindle version I am reading. The hard-back version will serve as a good reference book to those Old testament connections to the New Testament, and as such will be useful in Bible classes.

What a great way to assimilate the God-Man found in the Jewish scriptures! No wonder two thirds of the Bible is often neglected by mainstream Christianity--He's in there, loud and clear, but we have to want to look for Him. David Limbaugh's unabashed, matter-of-fact style of handling the most important truth is eye-opening, inspiring, and baiting. What if every pastor read this and took it seriously? Christianity would morph into what it SHOULD be--personal Jesus, His hand holding ours, His effervescence bubbling up His people, energizing this "last" generation. "Last?" It's in there. Thanks, Mr. Limbaugh; your private study which only Jesus saw erupts in this book, creating a tidal wave of minds and hearts.

I had heard about the concept of Impact Investing and was looking for a book to explain it in more detail. Anthony Bugg-Levine and Jed Emerson do a great job at breaking down the concept and delving into its application in the real world. It is a timely publication considering the change in investor interest currently and with any luck Impact Investing will soon be a household name. Certainly worth the read for anyone interested in the concept of blended value and how we all can make informed investment choices that help make a difference in the world.

A cautiously optimistic book about impact investing both as an (emerging) asset class as well as an approach to portfolio management. It strives to bridge the silos between the social sector practitioners and the financial capital markets players without taking ideological positions for or against each side.For the finance types, this is not a how-to book on impact investing as it does not focus on the pricing and valuation methodologies, rather it's more of a framework for approaching investing that incorporates social objectives into an entire asset management portfolio.For the social sector practitioners, it's a great primer to help un-demonize the financial markets' role and its potentially huge contribution to the impact investing space and the social sector, if framed appropriately.

It's an interesting read on social entrepreneurship.

As someone who considers themselves active and engaged in the world of impact investing, I was upset with the lack of tangible information that this book presented. Rather than (what felt like at times in the book) going in circles about the concepts of impact investing and the vision of what the future might hold, I would have found it much more beneficial to dive into the detail and case studies of impact investing from top organizations that are just mentioned in the book like Acumen Fund and Root Capital. I think the details of how these models operated, including their shortcomings, would have been much more beneficial to readers than many concepts the book dwelled on in great detail.Also, I think the book failed to bring up or provide valuable information about many key aspects of the world of impact investing, such Muhammad Yunus' concept of Social Business which is growing in popularity and the opportunity for a Social Stock Exchange. Perhaps this is because one of the authors was a founder of a very controversial microfinance bank and, from my viewpoint, talking about these topics would go against the values that he believes in which pushed that bank to it's controversial IPO.Additionally, I believe there were some misstated or under-explained parts of the book which, for me, took away its ability to be a valuable collection of information that I would recommend to my friends interested in this space. One example is that there is a reference in the book that Muhammad Yunus is a supporter of non-profit microfinance, when his for-profit bank (Grameen Bank in Bangladesh) is perhaps the most famous microfinance bank in the world. Also, the author talks lightly about the controversy around the investors in Comportamos and SKS gaining massive amounts of wealth in their IPO's, but doesn't talk about the details of the controversy - such as the interest rates of Comportamos that led to it's profit margins (80-100%) and the cruel collection methods of SKS that contributed to it's rapid expansion, many suicides, and (in part) the Indian microcredit bubble. I can't help but think that the authors left this information out on purpose to present a particular image of impact investing which doesn't accurately represent the entire space.Lastly - as someone who does have enough wealth to be identified as an "accredited investor," I would have liked to learn more about the current landscape and future potential of retail-level impact investments.

Bugg-Levine and Emerson describe the history and current space of impact investing, noting lessons learned along the way, and identify areas of promise and concern for the future of impact investing.This is a must-read for current and potential impact investors, social entrepreneurs, the philanthropic community, and policymakers interested in impact investing. I also highly recommend this book to individuals who are simply curious about the topic as it is not only informative, but also an enjoyable read.

I wish I had read the whole book before I left for Shanghai. Because my 10 days in Shanghai were business related I ddin't have a lot of time to do exploring. I ended up going back to this book after I'd gone out a few times (including a day-long urban tour). I was able to recount where I'd been but more importantly know that I hadn't missed important sites or aspects of certain areas because they were mostly all in the guide. The photos are gorgeous and you get a lot of important information (including contact info, pricing, mini-maps, and hours of operation for some venues) that often doesn't show up in other guides. The next time I'm in Shanghai for pleasure or vacation, I'll definitely make more use of this book.

This well-organized, easy-to-follow guide is packed with excellent insiders information about Shanghai. I followed many of the suggested walks and really gained a first hand, intimate sense of the city. I highly recommend it!

Love the small guides with map included and buy these for every trip. Highly Recommend.

While most history textbooks are heavy on the narrative and text, this one provides dynamic and detailed maps that provide another level of understanding. For example, did you know that the 1830 "July Revolution" in France had a direct influence on the 1831 Polish Uprising, which occurred in both Polish and Lithuanian territory, and how this was an important precedent to the 1863 Polish Revolt? The suppression of these revolts and other restrictions on freedom, in turn, led to significant emigration of Poles and Liths to the US in the late 19th century (and, decades later, some of their descendants became governors, business leaders, and other notable people in the US). What about a super-concise chronology of the French Revolution, key battles, legal reforms, and how the Napoleonic Wars between France and other European powers were also a global conflict?

As usual, Penguin books come through again. If looking for anything on history, archaeology, the classics, religion or etymology my first thought is always Penguin. For over fifty years now I have relied on their editions. The two volume Atlas of World History is an excellent compact reference.

I absolutely LOVE Mary Downing Hahn. Her ghost stories have always been so amazingly spooky. From the second you start reading one of her Ghost Stories, you are hooked....as in, you simply cannot put the down until you are done.“The Girl in the Locked Room” is absolutely nothing like Hahn’s previous ghost stories. I was truly disappointed in this book. Compared to her others, it fails miserably. While reading this book, I couldn’t help but think an assistant or even a teenager wrote it, but certainly not Mary Hahn.I’m not sure what happened, but it’s difficult to believe “The Girl in the Locked Room” comes from the author who wrote “The Old Willis Place”, “Deep, Dark and Dangerous” or “All the Lovely Bad Ones.”

I enjoyed the details Of scenes and characters that brought me into the story. I can relate to the idea of being watched, or thinking someone is watching me from a window. It helped with the creepy vibe. But Lily turns out to be a nice ghost, so this is an easy and not quite so scary read. Though, there are things that are dreadful, they aren't brought up consistently, mostly near the end. Oh, and the men that come in the night on horses...YIKES! Didn't everyone worry as a child that someone would come get them from their rooms? I think Mary Downing Hahn might've struck a nerve with this part of the story that many can relate to.

While this ghost story isn't quite in the same league as some of MDH's more famous ghost story's (The Old Willis Place), it still a good old fashion ghost story, and that is what MDH does best. It’s a bit of a slow start, but an unusual ending pulls it through.

My son discovered this author in 4th grade and it steadily cruising through the series. Holds his interest and good mysteries.

I must admit that I only like scary books that are intended for younger readers. I am a wimp. It was a nice read.

I absolutely love this book!. I've been making all natural soap for over a year and have bought many soap books and I absolutely love it. She gives all the knowledge, tips, techniques, and recipes needed for a beginner to novice soaper. All the pictures are so colorful, I just wish there would be a picture for each soap recipe on its recipe page. I can't wait to begin trying the soap recipes and new techniques.

Did you know that descriptions of soapmaking have been discovered going back to 2200 B.C.? This author has been making her own soap since 2008. FYI none of the recipes contain palm oil.Eight chapters:All About Soapmaking * Essential Equipment and Ingredients * Cold-Process Soapmaking * Hot-Process Soapmaking * Liquid Soapmaking * Melt-and-Pour Soapmaking * Hand-Milling Soap * Finishing TouchesWhat's the difference between all the different types of soap? The author explains them in the first chapter. Lots of cool techniques shared with plenty of pictures! (Pictures are not beside the individual recipes but in the "How To' sections.) If you've wondered how to create swirly soap or even layered soap, it's all in this book!IMPORTANT to note that you will need a digital scale that has metric measurements i.e. grams as ALL the measurements are in grams. When making soap, all ingredients are weighed. Yes, even the water! LOVE the way the title of each recipe is highlighted making them so easy to see.As a family who makes their own soap I was interested to see what I would learn from this book. I am happy to report that this book contains a wealth of information along with having a LOT of recipes. We will definitely be referencing back to this for our next soapmaking marathon. I've only made soap one time, so I'm not exactly a pro or the most qualified person to write a review on this book. That being said, I can offer a look at what it's like to read this book as a novice. For starters this is a gorgeous book, it's a little big and intimidating at first glance but I really like the lay out (could have used a lot more pictures though!). This book contains 65 soap recipes and is broken into 8 sections. The first two talk about soap making and provide a brief but necessary overview on what to expect, essential equipment, and ingredients. After that it jumps right in and the remaining chapters are broken into sections regarding the process behind them: cold process, hot process, liquid, melt and pour, and hand milling. Sprinkled throughout the recipes are tips and techniques as well as very detailed instructions. The last chapter is on finishing touches. Even though I haven't started any batches of soap yet, I'm really excited to try out some of these recipes. Mocha mint soap, cucumber scrub soap, rose clay soap, and charcoal soap are just a few of the 60+ recipes I can't wait to try out. An excellent guide for beginners as well as an excellent recipe book for even the most experienced of soap-makers.

I am a well seasoned soapmaker; so I understand the chemistry behind making soap and have done much research as well. Amanda's book is a wonderful resource for anyone who would like to make soap using more "Natural" ingredients. I know Amanda and her husband Benjamin and they have a wealth of knowledge that they share with others and they teach people in other countries to help them be more self sustainable.This book has eight chapters:All about soapmakingEssential Equipment and ingredientsCold Process soapmakingHot process soapmakingLiquid soapmakingMelt and pour soapmakingHand Milling soapFinishing TouchesThere is also a measurement and conversions chart, glossary, resource list, recipe label index and a regular index.Amanda covers colorants that are more natural using spices, herbs, clays and such. She does not cover the "unnatural" colorants and she mentions this in her book. She also uses essential oils and natural additives. Even though she does include melt and pour (which can cause controversy with some soapmakers) she still includes a chapter for those wanting to try this method.Soap making can be hazardous and she does discuss the importance of safety, which is absolutely paramount with anyone who has ever made soap. In my 20 year of soapmaking, I have never had a lye burn or any bad thing happen, but it because I stick to absolute safety and good manufacturing practices.Worth mentioning with the digital scale that she recommends, I would additionally recommend one that measures at least to tenths. And you want one that measures in grams and ounces as well. They are relatively inexpensive. Shop around and get a good one. You'll be glad you did.Some soapmakers will use Palm Oil. I am one of those. I do try to get sustainable palm oil, but I do not avoid it, and that is a personal choice.There are a good variety of pictures in this book which is a help for those who haven't had a great deal of experience using natural additives.Amanda also has some good troubleshooting tips in the book as well as some excellent recipes. One of the things that you will want to is find a good lye calculator and she lists several of these in her book under resources. Her recipes and instructions are very well stated and easy to follow. This is a wonderful resource book and I am happy to have received a copy from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review.I would highly recommend this book for anyone. She covers the basics in safety, recipes, and even the "what to do's" if you have a problem batch. Her beautiful illustrations and her ability to explain what could seem like a complicated process will put you at ease ...it is really quite simple if you just follow along. Amanda has the ability to communicate with such clarity and it makes this book extremely easy to follow! I have read 100's of books and articles about maintaining your sexual relationship in marriage and this book has one of the best sections of describing the differences in the way men and women relate to sex. I enjoyed that Rochelle approaches sex from the standpoint that both men and women desire and need it, despite approaching it from different angles. The only "beef" I have is that although the book was very good, the links at then end are high pressure sales to purchase additional material that you "have" to have. I didn't appreciate the high-pressure sales tactics at the links and unfortunately, it diminishes the trust I have in the author. I still gave the book 5 stars, although I'm tempted to take the stars away because of these links.

An excellent aid in adding and keeping the fires of passion burning. We to soon take our mates for granted. This lets us know that maintaining interest in the marriage bed is a preventative to wandering.

Recycled information that you can read from Cosmo or Glamour magazine.....look good for your husband, wear make-up, take a bath with oils to smell good, etc. And once again, most of the responsibility lies on the woman to do most of the work. No new or helpful information that you haven't already read a 1000 times if you are a woman. Wish I could return.

I would recommend this book to all couples not just the married ones! It has great insight and if you follow along with the book you will really see a difference. It challenges you both in really great ways! It really is a great read for everyone!!
