Here in Brazil, I read this good book. This book comes from a diary of the Jew, Lithuanian and anarchist Alexander Berkman (1870 - 1936). This good book begins in the lasts weeks of 1919, at the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917. On chapter XIII of this book, writen in March 1920 Berkman and Emma Goldman meet Lenin, whom Berkman describes as speaking these sentences: "The peasant doesn't like us. Lenin They are backward and strogly imbued with the sense of private ownership. That spirit must be discouraged and erradicated."This book describes the Leninist Soviet Union as a mafiacracy under the command of Lenin. There's fear, famine end suffering for the people and the communists with luxes and privileges. A woman of Moscow that the author was fried in Tzar's times saw her mother and two brothers to die of famine during Lenin's government.Among the more than one thousand book that I read today, just about a dozen books are mainly about Lenin's government. And this book is a good primary source, about Lenin and his mafiacracy. Tcheka gives fear for all people's persons, while Tcheka is also the commander of corruption. To robber and to be the only police at the same time was the Cheka's mission and this Satanic instituition made these missions at the same time, during Lenin's government. This good book ends in September 1921 with Alexander Berkman's decision to leave Russia, described in these sentences: "Gray are the passing days. One by one the embers of hope have died out. Terror and despotism have crushed the life born in October.... Dictatorship is trampling the masses under foot. The Revolution is dead; its spirit cries in the wilderness.... I have decided to leave Russia."

The Bolshevik Myth by Alexander Berkman is an interesting primary source which sheds an insider's look at the earliest phase of Communism in Russia. Berkman was a long-time anarchist who was deported in 1920 from the United States to Russia. The deportation was part of a mass deportation of leftist foreign radicals after the original "Red Scare" and "Palmer Raids" of the post-World War I period. Berkman and other well-known foreign born leftists, including Emma Goldman, as well as other, less well-known revolutionaries, were put on the transport ship, the USAT Buford, and sent to Revolutionary Russia.Berkman captures the excitement of leftist revolutionaries who are like Moses looking at the Promised Land. Berkman and his fellow Buford group look at Revolutionary Russia as the great end to which they have been striving their entire lives. All had been imprisoned for their leftists beliefs and many had been beaten for those beliefs and most had surrendered anything resembling a normal life for the sake of The Revolution. Russia would be the consummation of the dreams of their lives. The scales fall of their eyes quickly. Even though many of them are competent tradesmen, they cannot find work because of the incompetence and inefficiencies of the Bolshevik system. They spend months with no work, receiving a minimal "pyock" (ration) and are reduced to selling their American goods into the black-market to survive, even though the Bolsheviks have outlawed private trading on penalty of imprisonment. Over the course of the book, Berkman recounts at various times how this Buford deportee had been sent to Siberia and that Buford deportee had been shot without due process by the Tcheka. The Eschaton that the leftist Revolutionaries awaited was not the one they had spent years in exile waiting for.Berkman's work is priceless for his ability to tell a story that spans the gap between the average, forgotten Russian and the upper reaches of Bolshevik society. Bekman meets and interacts with Lenin, Kamenev, and Zinoviev. He meets Peter Kropotkin and Bertrand Russell, who was visiting Russia as part of a delegation of Labor representatives who visited Russia in order to get information in order to promote the lifting of the Allied blockade. Berkman also attends the funeral of John Reed (who was the hero of Warren Beatty's hagiographic "Reds," which was nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture in 1981.)The Russia that Berkman entered was still in the throes of the Russian Civil War. White generals were still fighting in the Ukraine and in the North. The Allies were still enforcing a blockade against the Communists. Berkman is there when the Civil War ends and the long-suffering people of Russia expect the Bolsheviks to finally back off their war time measures, only to be disappointed when the Bolsheviks decide to promote what they feel is a return to the master they had thought they had gotten rid of with the Revolution. Berkman writes:Almost every otvetstvenny (responsible) Communist is gone to Moscow to attend the Ninth Congress of the Party. Grave questions are at issue, and Lenin and Trotsky have sounded the keynote --- militarization of labor. The papers are filled with the discussion of the proposed introduction of yedinolitchiye (one-man industrial management) to take the place of the present collegiate form. "We must learn from the bourgeoisie," Lenin says, "and use them for our purposes."  Among the labor elements there is strong opposition to the new plan, but Trotsky contends that the unions have failed in the management of industry: the proposed system is to organize production more efficiently. The labor men, on the contrary, say that the workers had not been given the opportunity, extreme State centralization having taken over the functions of the unions. yedinolitchiye, they claim, means complete charge of factory and shop by one. "Yedinolitchiye, they claim, means complete charge of factory and shop by one man, the socalled spets (specialists), to the exclusion of the workers from management.  "Step by step we are losing everything we've gained by the Revolution," a shop committee-man said to me. "The new plan means the return of the former master. The spets is the old bourzhooi, and now he is coming back to whip us to work again. But last year Lenin himself denounced the plan as counter-revolutionary, when the Mensheviki advocated it. They are still in prison for it."Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1326-1329). MacMay. Kindle Edition.Berkman also describes the corruption of the Bolsheviks and the terror reign imposed by the Tcheka. The Bolsheviks routinely kicked workers out of their residences so as to acquire them for themselves. Berkman describes a luxurious party given for the British Labor delegation, complete with servants, while Russians were starving:"Delovoi Dvor, the Soviet Hotel assigned to the British guests, has been entirely renovated, and looks clean and fresh. The large dining room is tastefully decorated with crimson banners and mottoes of welcome. Socialist legends of the solidarity of the workers of the world and the triumph of the Revolution through the dictatorship of the proletariat speak from the walls in various tongues. Potted plants lend the spacious room warmth and color.  Covers were set for a large number, including the delegates, the official representatives of the Soviet Government, some members of the Third International, and the invited spokesmen of labor. Russian caviar, soup, white bread, two kinds of meat and a variety of vegetables were on the menu. When fried chicken was served, I saw some of the Britishers exchange wondering glances.  "A jolly good meal for starving Russia," a delegate at my side remarked to his neighbor in the lull of clattering dishes and laughter.  "Rather. Natty wench," the other replied with a suggestive wink at the winsome young waitress serving him."Thought the Bolsheviks had done away with servants."  Angelica Balabanova, sitting opposite me, looked perturbed.Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1574-1582). MacMay. Kindle Edition. The Bolsheviks also did not do away with the death penalty, prisons or the secret police. They outdid the Tsar by eliminating due process and re-instituting forced labor. Berkman describes a scene where a black market he visits is raided. Later he meets some of the marketeers who tell them that they were released by the Tcheka through the simple expedient of handing over their money. Given the Communist history for declaring dissidents insane, this observation from Berkman is chilling:"The Government pretended to consider Maria insane and had placed her in a sanitarium, from which she recently escaped."Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1629-1630). MacMay. Kindle Edition.Berkman was an Anarchist, and not a Communist. The reader does not get much insight into the politics that set off the different leftist groups, but the plethora of groups is dizzying. There were the Social Revolutionaries and the Social Democrats, which split to become the Mensheviks and Bolsheviks. There were the Anarchists and Berkman mentions Maximalists and other groups. Clearly, one of the shocking things for Berkman was that the sense of leftist revolutionary solidarity that he had experienced in the West was betrayed by the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks oppressed the other leftists parties as badly - and more effectively - than had the capitalists.""We know it," he retorted; "but anti-Soviet handbills had been found in the factories, and my men thought they might have some connection with Tch---'s laboratory. But he stubbornly refused to answer questions."  "Well, that's an old practice of arrested revolutionists," I reminded him.  Bakaiev grew indignant. "That is why I'm holding him," he declared."Such tactics were justified against the bourgeois régime, but it is an insult to treat us so. Tch--- acts as if we were gendarmes."  "Do you think it matters by whom one is kept in jail?"  "Well, don't let us discuss it, Berkman," he said. "You don't know for whom you are interceding."  "And the other two men?"  "They were found with Tch---," he replied. "We are not persecuting Anarchists, believe me; but these men are not safe at liberty."Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1643-1649). MacMay. Kindle Edition.Berkman was there for the final betrayal of the Revolution. The sailors at Konigsburg protested the starvation of the Petrograd workers by the Bolsheviks. The rebellion by those sailors had triggered the revolution against the Tsar. The sailors had been operating through a communal system. Rather than deal with the sailors, however, the Bolsheviks brought in troops and crushed the sailors' rebellion. For an anarchist, like Berkman this was the last straw. After approximately one year in "paradise," Berkman realized that the Bolsheviks were corrupt and dictatorial, and he decided to leave Russia to spread the truth about the workers paradise. To a certain extent, we can feel a bit of schadenfreude for the fate of Berkman, but we ought to give him credit. There were a lot of Westerners who going to Russia and being taken in by the Potemkin villages of Communism. Many came back and uttered fatuous nonsense like Lincoln Steffens who said "I have seen the future and it works" and John Reed who became the hero of Warren Beatty's hagiography. Those people were either fools or they knew what Berkman knew and lied. Berkman, at least, had the honesty to part company from the "party line" in writing this interesting work of eyewitness history.

Wonderfully silly kids story. Enjoyed by this adult.

Not anywhere near as funny as Wonkey Donkey. Kids would probably like it though. I couldn't finish reading it. Glad I didn't pay for it.

While it is true, as others have said, that this book resembles another fun story about a stinky donkey, it does have its own charm and small kids will love it. The illustrations help.

While very similar to another popular book about a donkey, it still had it's own tale, and was cute to read. I believe it to be a fun read for younger readers.

Fun book to read, anticipating what new rhyming words would come up. Silly ,fun and a word that a kids love to use and shock adults!

Great and very funny story, with lots of rhyming, and repetitive, so good for children to practice tough twisters. Fun for all ages.

Funny cute and well written!! Much better than the other wonkey donkey book!!

My daughter loved the story she says he is soooo cute she is reallly happy for a follow up story

This book has many Radios listed and photographed in color that make it a very desirable for identifying Vintage Radios. It is not complete as to all Radios made, as such a book would take Volumes especially if it included the History of the specific Radio and an outline of the Company that made so many Radios, especially in the United States during the Golden Age of Radio. Highly recommended.

Older book most information outdated since the internet

Old .... very outdated.

This is one of several books I have on old radios, but the one I reach for first. Great seller! Great price!

I don't have much use for price lists. Pricing is far too varied to be representative of what you'd see in reality; but at least they do give you a heads up whether a given radio is generally valuable or generally dime-a-dozen. Though it never seems to keep the local antique co-op from pricing a 60s GE clock radio as if it were a catalin Fada. This one is listed in "database" format, in other words, it's mainly a text listing of makes and models with a little bit of info. E.g. Zenith 5-G-500, portable, 1941, cloth covered, inner right black dial, left grille, fold-down front, handle, 2 Z knobs, BC, 5 tubes, AC/DC/battery....$25-30. So if you've got a Zenith 5-G-500 it'll tell you the year it was made and couple other pieces if info you may not know, but that's it. If you have a radio that's without identification markings (and we've all seen those), you ain't gonna find it in here. There are a some photos, but far, far fewer than listings.

Review

"This work is a tour de force. With his unique combination of Christian evangelical theological sophistication, clinical sensitivity and compassion, and scientific acumen and mastery, Yarhouse establishes in this compelling book why he is the most important voice reflecting on the complex challenges of sexuality today." (Stanton L. Jones, provost and professor of psychology, Wheaton College)"Understanding Gender Dysphoria is a deeply practical and timely book. Many of the variables surrounding the transgender community are nuanced and intense, yet completely unknown to the evangelical world. Mark provides helpful working knowledge of key terms, concepts and relevant issues. And with humility and great care he directly addresses how individual Christians and the broader evangelical church can respond. Although this book is academic in nature, it should be required reading for all church leadership. This is my new go-to book for the Marin Foundation's work with evangelicals on the topic. Mark's research must be paid attention to." (Andrew Marin, author of Love Is an Orientation)"This book is a must-read for pastors, educators and those who want to engage the cultural discussion around human sexuality. Yarhouse is a first-rate scholar, educator and therapist who also loves Jesus and Scripture. He deeply cares for people and the church. His approach to this complex topic is not to tell the reader what to think, but to teach the reader, who then can wisely discern how to apply the information to their particular context. This book educates so that people can lead wisely, pastor compassionately and build community that lives out the great commandment to love God and others." (Shirley V. Hoogstra, president, Council for Christian Colleges & Universities)"I deeply respect the work that Mark Yarhouse has done in this field and have benefited greatly from his thinking." (Bill Hybels, senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Church)"It's hard to keep up with current words and acronyms for sexuality and gender, much less understand what they really mean. Even more challenging is evaluating and engaging these issues from a Christian perspective. Thank God―literally and truly―for Dr. Mark Yarhouse! Yarhouse articulates a goal many Christians will quickly claim as their own: to rise above political and ideological battles to provide ministry, pastoral support and compassionate care to all persons. Yarhouse helps us begin to put this ideal into practice by explaining gender dysphoria, transgender, and gender normativity and non-normativity, based on stories, professional counseling experience and research, some conducted by him and his graduate students. He treats all persons equally, asking of us all, 'How does gender permeate our lives―and how should it?' His voice is clear and serious, his perspective well-informed and studious, and his heart pastoral and concerned for the well-being of individual persons, especially those who seek support and community within Christian churches. If you've wondered how Christians and churches can support people with gender dysphoria who are seeking a meaningful story, lifeway and community, read this book!" (Jenell Paris, professor of anthropology, Messiah College)"Speaking as a pastor to church leaders, I enthusiastically commend my friend Dr. Mark Yarhouse for his unflinching courage, heartfelt compassion, biblical loyalty and rigorous scholarship in addressing the painfully complex and controversial issue of gender dysphoria. This book is an exquisite gift of understanding that I believe is absolutely essential to the church's crafting of ministry to hurting people that reflects the grace and love of Jesus. Unwrap and use it as soon as possible!" (Andrew McQuitty, author of Notes from the Valley: A Spiritual Cancer Travelogue)"Could the timing be better for a book to be released on the topic of gender dysphoria? Were you aware of this term a year ago and what it means? Whatever you knew or didn't know then, now you have an excellent resource in Mark Yarhouse's most recent work on the topic. He has written extensively on sexuality and gender, and in this book her offers a scholarly look at the issue of gender dysphoria. . . . From the first to the final page, Mark Yarhouse writes to inform, educate and challenge readers to be aware and sensitive to this demographic. . . . I cannot think of a more important time than the present to be gathering information on this topic, to help shape your position, refine it or perhaps change it. . . . Yarhouse has presented a thoughtful, scholarly work on this current cultural issue. I cannot stress strongly enough that this book should be read and available to every ministering person what has opportunity to work with people―the church!" (Kent Miller, YouthWorker Journal, November/December 2015)"Never losing touch with the human stories that underlie any scientific or clinical discussion of the issue of gender identity, Yarhouse (psychology, Regent Univ.) has written a timely, often trenchant account of the complex cultural and psychological terrain in which the issues of gender dysphoria and transgender circulate. . . . Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals; general readers." (M. Uebel, CHOICE, November 2015)"Mark Yarhouse's Understanding Gender Dysphoria: Navigating Transgender Issues in a Changing Culture is a book that has the potential to change the conversation surrounding transgender, genderqueer and gender non-conforming people and our role in the church. Mark writes from a fairly conservative evangelical perspective, but there is one critical difference between his approach and the approach I usually see from conservative writers: Mark has actually listened to trans people with a view to understanding, and his goal is to help churches provide pastoral care to a group that has traditionally been stigmatized and marginalized." (Melinda Selmys, Patheos, July 3, 2015)"Understanding Gender Dysphoria is a valuable work for those wishing to engage with transgender issues. It doesn't answer every question that might come up, but it does give readers the tools to come up with their own answers while doing so in a loving and Christian way." (J. W. Wartick, Always Have a Reason, July 29, 2015)

Dr. Yarhouse’s book is a unique and extremely valuable contribution to the discussion on gender identity, gender dysphoria, and how a local church can engage with people who experience gender dysphoria. The book is targeted towards Christians who are seeking to understand what gender dysphoria is and how to respond to it in a biblical way. However, I expect any person who is interested in the topic will gain something from it.This book is unique because Dr. Yarhouse possesses a unique combination of several crucial characteristics: (1) formal Christian theological training; (2) formal psychological training; and (3) over a decade of clinical experience in treating people who experience gender dysphoria. This combination of characteristics sets him apart from almost every other Christian who has published something on this topic and makes him one of the most authoritative voices that the evangelical church has for summarizing the latest research and providing thoughts on a way ahead.I found this book to be incredibly valuable for a number of reasons that I will attempt to summarize briefly.First, the book’s tone is very gracious and respectful. While this kind of respect should be the standard, in my experience it is not uncommon for people to write about transgender issues with tones of disdain. Throughout the book, Dr. Yarhouse puts in reminders that people who experience gender dysphoria are not any less worthy of respect than the average person, even saying (p. 41) “I acknowledge that we are – all of us – disordered. We do not like to think of ourselves as disordered, and this too is a reflection of the fall…What will make it harder is if we treat gender dysphoria as disorder while those of us who do not experience gender dysphoria…relate to others as though we are not ourselves disordered.”Second, I found the book to be an incredibly fair and even-handed treatment of the available literature on gender dysphoria. Over the years I have read the majority of published books and articles on this topic. (In contrast with published works on homosexuality, the volume of research and theological attention devoted to gender dysphoria is just a trickle.) Most authors on this topic only promote their own views and cite works that support those views. In contrast, Dr. Yarhouse provides a comprehensive and fair representation of existing views and research. The average proponent of the brain sex theory or sex reassignment surgery does not, in my experience, highlight Blanchard’s theories (except, perhaps, to denigrate them). Nor does the average Christian who believes transitioning is morally wrong tend to highlight studies by Diamond or Mazur. The Notes section at the end represents what is perhaps an unparalleled bibliography for the average person who is new to this subject and wants to understand what books and articles have been published about it.Third, Dr. Yarhouse identifies three common frameworks, or lenses, with which people today tend to view gender dysphoria. This is valuable because it can help people to understand how others may approach the subject differently, potentially leading to actual discourse versus just talking past each other. He also proposes an integrated framework that combines the best aspects of the three. I believe this integrated framework is a valuable tool for the church to build upon. One observation that I found particularly insightful was that people are looking for a sense of meaning and community and thus tend to gravitate towards the diversity framework (which celebrates the transgender experience) because it offers these things. In contrast, the integrity (commonly held in evangelical circles) and disability frameworks do not inherently provide meaning-making structures or storylines (p. 124 - “Most people do not find, ‘I’m managing my dysphoria in the least invasive way’ as a particularly meaningful storyline for identity and community”). This observation leads to reflection on how the church can better integrate this aspect of the diversity framework together with the others.Though I could fill this entire review with superlatives (I am giving the book five stars after all), I do have a few relatively minor critiques and comments that may help someone know what to expect.First, at times the book tends to read like a seminary textbook or a peer-reviewed article in a clinical journal. (Not surprising, since Dr. Yarhouse is, after all, a university professor and director of a research institute.) Words like “telos,” “noetic,” and “etiology,” which are readily understandable to someone who has studied Greek or regularly reads medical journals, frequently appear with little explanation. This is particularly the case in chapters 3-5, in which he reviews the available research and treatments. It is less the case in the chapters where he discusses Christian responses. Regardless, I think the book is approachable to anyone who is really wanting to understand more about gender dysphoria.Second (and related to the first item), facts and excerpts from books or studies are sometimes presented without a lot of commentary to help a person understand the meaning of those facts. This is understandable given that if Dr. Yarhouse were to stop and thoroughly explain every fact presented, the book would probably be ten times longer. It is also fine if one is already familiar with the topic at hand. However, if one is reading about gender dysphoria for the first time, there may be times when a fact, while true, may cause someone to attach the wrong meaning to the fact. The most notable instance of this to me was on p. 119 where Dr. Yarhouse presented a study by Dhejne et al., which concluded that the mortality/suicide rate was higher in post-operative transsexuals than in the general population. The average person, not understanding how high the suicide rate is in the pre-operative transsexual population, could easily read this and think that surgical operations increase the likelihood of a transsexual person’s suicide. The study did not factor in the mortality rate of pre-operative transsexuals (in fact the study even says “no inferences can be drawn as to the effectiveness of sex reassignment as a treatment for transsexualism. In other words, the results should not be interpreted such as sex reassignment per se increases morbidity and mortality. Things might have been even worse without sex reassignment.”) However, this was not explained in the subsequent commentary.Third, Dr. Yarhouse seems to use pronouns that are consistent with a person’s outward gender presentation. That is, if referring to someone who experiences gender dysphoria but is not seeking sex reassignment, pronouns consistent with the person’s biological sex are used. However, if referring to someone who is transitioning, pronouns consistent with the target gender are used. This may be unexpected and jarring to people who insist on sticking with the name and pronouns consistent with a person’s biological sex. In his associated Christianity Today article, Dr. Yarhouse explains, “If Sara shares her name with me, as a clinician and Christian, I use it. I do not use this moment to shout ‘Integrity!’ by using her male name or pronoun, which clearly goes against that person’s wishes. It is an act of respect, even if we disagree, to let the person determine what they want to be called. If we can’t grant them that, it’s going to be next to impossible to establish any sort of relationship with them.” However I do not recall a similar explanation in the book.To conclude, I am extremely grateful that Dr. Yarhouse took the time to write this book. Gender dysphoria is currently a very misunderstood and polarizing topic, and Dr. Yarhouse writes with an authority, clarity, and humility that deserves much respect and gratitude, particularly from the Christian church. Although I know this book is not going to please everyone, I think Dr. Yarhouse makes many insightful points that are well worth considering, regardless of your take on gender dysphoria.

This book provides good information on an issue which the Christian community does not seem to really understand. It is fairly easy to read, although reads a bit more like a textbook. I would highly recommend it for Christians who are wanting to understand more about the trans-gender community, what it means to be trans-gender and how to respond to trans-gender people in a loving way. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is the writing style and because I read it on an older Kindle. The book is kind of difficult to stay engaged with, partly due to the writers style. He tended to repeat himself a lot, which by the end of the book got pretty annoying. One big theme he talks about is the different frameworks in which trans-gender issues are seen. He spends a whole chapter describing these frameworks but then whenever he refers to them throughout the book (which is often), he goes and explains each framework again adding unnecessary length to the book. Also, if you are going to read this book, buy the actual paperback because he frequently sites notes and studies which are in the back of the book which are hard to flip to with an older kindle.

While searching for resources to assist my parents in understanding transsexuality, I stumbled across this book and decided to give it a read. It's written from a Christian perspective, and my mother specifically raised concerns about being able to incorporate an understanding of transsexuality into her faith framework. So, I've been on the lookout for such resources. While I don't exactly hold the same beliefs as my parents when it comes to Christianity, I'm reasonably well educated in Christian doctrines. So, from that perspective - I found that for the most part, this book is fair and compassionate in its exploration of gender dysphoria. I also think it does a decent job of exploring the spiritual and religious ramifications of what it means to be transgender, particularly in the way it presents many different ideas on how these two concepts could be meshed together, and the pro's and con's of each. It also gives a good overview of some of the scientific theories behind the etiology of transgenderism in general. That Said. I have some issues with the book, from what I've read so far. If you're trans and are looking to give this book to someone as a resource, there are some things you need to be aware of.1. This book makes certain assumptions that I don't agree with, that I find quite arbitrary, and that I think contradict reality. The most glaring of these is the author's framing of the idea of "deconstructing sex/gender" - basically, the idea that biological sex is a spectrum rather than a strict dichotomy - as radical, subversive, and "bad". In my mind, the very existence of trans and intersex people seems to demonstrate that there can be gradations in between the poles of male and female. As fair is he is to other ideas, I don't really see his motivation for being so prejudiced against this particular idea, except perhaps to shore up his teleological argument in the first chapter about the god-ordained nature of the two dichotomous sexes.2. Ray Blanchard's "autogynephilia" theory is not only mentioned in this book, but it is given somewhat-serious consideration. To me this is a BIG RED FLAG. To be fair, the author treats AGP fairly dismissively, and alludes to the fact that it is unscientific, untestable, and has been thoroughly debunked. However, the mere fact that it was given any attention AT ALL in such a recently-published book is a bit disturbing. Which brings me to my third point:3. The author gives a number of different points of view on the whole subject, which in and of itself isn't necessarily bad, in my opinion. The problem is that he gives approximately equal weight to all of them, regardless of the amount of evidence for or against any one theory. He casts the shadow of "well, we don't /really/ know /for sure/" across the entire text, which, sure. We don't 100% know what causes people to experience gender dysphoria. But there is a huge body of evidence for biological/neurological causes, and in general, there is a consensus among researchers that it is highly likely to be a physiological phenomenon at its core. But he seems to gloss over this, and presents a false sense of competition among these different ideas as if they are all on equal footing. As if to say "we may never truly know 100% for sure, so it could just as likely be any of these." Which I find to be misleading and unnecessarily obfuscating. Those caveats aside, this book may well be of use as a resource for Christians to better understand trans people. My advice, though, is to supplement it with other materials, or at least some explanation, which give a more accurate view of modern scientific studies on transgenderism, ESPECIALLY material that more thoroughly debunks Blanchard's non-science.

I'm a professional who has worked with hundreds of individuals dealing with sex-related difficulties. I've read numerous books and articles, and this is the most balanced work on gender dysphoria that I have read. Excellent! It covers the research material but is still accessible to any reader who really cares about this topic. Although the author includes sections of the book intended for Christians/churches, it is sensitive to a variety of perspectives and treats all perspectives with fairness. Highly recommended!

Sepp Holzer's Permaculture: A Practical Guide to Small-Scale, Integrative Farming and Gardening, by Sepp Holzer

Review

"A fascinating book written by a man who has devoted a lifetime to working with nature and creating extraordinarily diverse polycultures. His work is breathtaking."--Maddy Harland, editor of Permaculture Magazine "There, at an altitude which everyone else has abandoned to low-value forestry, what is probably the best example of a permaculture farm in Europe stands out like a beacon."--Patrick Whitefield, permaculture author and teacher ForeWord Reviews- Holzer's beautifully designed and illustrated book is essential reading for all who care about the land and the vast interrelated web of living beings who inhabit it, and it is especially timely, since small and organic farmers in the United States are being threatened by agribusiness, chemical companies, and others who view nature as something to conquer and ravish rather than honor and learn from. Large- and small-scale farmers, home gardeners, and even those who only have room to grow in a few pots on a city balcony will find Holzer's methods applicable and effective, his reasoning and knowledge impeccable, and his spirit pure and honest. (Kristine Morris)"The real story of a 110+ acre commercial permaculture farm featuring 14,000 fruit trees with diverse understory plants, complete integration of rotationally grazed livestock, terraces and rainwater harvesting, and so much more. Anyone interested in taking permaculture to a larger scale in a cold climate will benefit from Sepp Holtzer's 40 years of practical experience implementing permaculture principles."--Eric Toensmeier, author of Perennial Vegetables and co-author of Edible Forest Gardens Here's great news for fruit-loving gardeners everywhere! Most of the work of establishing, pruning, and tending fruit trees by 'modern' methods is unnecessary and even counterproductive. Sepp Holzer's Permaculture is the One-Straw Revolution for tree crops.--Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-reliance in Uncertain Times "After reading this book, all I can say is Sepp Holzer is a Superstar Farmer. Holzer turns out an absolutely remarkable volume and variety of food products, all without one smidgen of chemical fertilizer, and on land in Austria that an Illinois corn farmer would pronounce too marginal for agriculture. American farmers and gardeners will be particularly interested in Holzer's raised beds--which are quite different in construction from ours in the U.S.--as well as his inventive water well irrigation systems, unique methods for integrating livestock into his fruit and vegetable gardens, and practical, low-labor way to grow mushrooms. A fascinating book for anyone who aspires to become the ultimate, champion professional of sustainable farming."--Gene Logsdon, author of Holy Shit: Managing Manure to Save Mankind, and The Contrary Farmer "As the era of cheap energy, stable climates and surplus fertilizer stocks comes to a close, the principles of permaculture will become increasingly attractive as one way to design our future food and agriculture systems. Sepp Holzer's Permaculture provides important insights for applying these principles, for both rural farming and emerging forms of urban agriculture."--Frederick Kirschenmann, President, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture

About the Author

Josef ("Sepp") Holzer was born in the province of Salzburg, Austria. He is a farmer, author, and an international consultant for natural agriculture. He took over his parents' mountain farm business in 1962 and pioneered the use of ecological farming, or permaculture, techniques at high altitudes (1,100 to 1,500 meters above sea level) after being unsuccessful with regular farming methods. Called the "rebel farmer" because he persisted in these practices despite being fined and even threatened with prison for practices such as not pruning his fruit trees (unpruned fruit trees survive snow loads that will break pruned trees). He has also created some of the world's best examples of using ponds as reflectors to increase solar gain for passive solar heating of structures, and of using the microclimate created by rock outcrops to effectively change the hardiness zone for nearby plants. He has also done original work in the use of Hugelkultur and natural branch development. He is conducting permaculture ("Holzer Permaculture") seminars at his farm and worldwide, while continuing to work on his alpine farm. His farm now spans over 45 hectares of forest gardens, including 70 ponds, and is said to be the most consistent example of permaculture worldwide. He is author of several books and the subject of the film The Agricultural Rebel. He works nationally as permaculture activist in the established agricultural industry and works internationally as adviser for ecological agriculture. He is the author of Desert or Paradise: Restoring Endangered Landscapes Using Water Management, Including Lake and Pond Construction, and Sepp Holzer's Permaculture: A Practical Guide to Small-Scale, Integrative Farming and Gardening.

I've read a large number of the permaculture books available, and I've thought most of them were very good. This book sets itself apart from the rest, however, in one way that I think is very important -- most of them have so much detailed information that it's easy to get lost in it and suffer from what I call "paralysis of information." There are so many little things to know that it seems like you can never just go do something because it might not be optimal. This book does not suffer from that problem. While it does have less detail than most, it has sufficient detail to get the basic ideas across, and it does so in a way that really encourages you to get out there and do something so you can really start learning from experience. The presentation here is less prescription and more exploration. Where the Designers' Manual is encyclopedic in its scope to the point where it can feel like every possible situation is covered, this one leaves more room for individual adaptation and experimentation. The detail will come, and the other books will be invaluable when you need them. However, I expect that I'll be turning to Sepp's book most often in the initial phases of getting my own property turned around.Having said that, I'd still recommend getting another permaculture book in addition to this one, as the additional ideas and information are really helpful as well. Try Mollison's Introduction to Permaculture, or Morrow's Earth Users Guide to Permaculture; both are very good. When you're ready to really go hard core, get the Designers' Manual and prepare to spend some hard study time internalizing it.

This was an easy read, not at all dry or too technical. Mr Holzer describes his farming methods and his farm, his trials and errors and the lessons he learned the hard way.He talks about permaculture, principles that he has been applying even before the term was coined. He has some great ideas, and you only have to see the pictures of his farm to know that they really work. What I didn't like about it was that although he tells us what he did on his farm, he doesn't give enough details on how he does them. He whets your appetite for his methods, but then doesn't tell you enough. For example, he says stuff like: "I use foxglove to improve the health of the soil, among other reasons". It only leaves me wondering, what are those reasons? He keeps telling that he has been watching the nature for 40 years, but he doesn't give the recipes for his plant mixtures. Instead, he suggests that one should observe nature and experiment for oneself.I bought the book precisely to learn from his experiences, instead of having to spend years observing nature myself. But overall it is a fascinating read, especially if you want an introduction to permaculture. It is a great lesson on thinking outside the box and succeeding against all odds. You can feel his love and respect for nature and for his land.

Fascinating guy and his experience but I didn't feel guided in my permaculture efforts and his 100 acres is not what I consider small scale farming. This wasn't as helpful/insightful as I had hoped.

Very creative and intelligent relationship with his land; a farmer who pays no attention to modern ways, developing his own ways of successful farming and gardening, at high altitudes he accomplishes what many cannot do in more moderate places. He has restored drought areas to return water supplies through gardening and farming techniques.

This is, by far, the best book written on sustainable, eco-friendly gardening. It is written in a personal, down-to-earth and very logical way. Everything that Mr Holzer wrote made total sense and aligned with my own observations. This is a very practical book too. I've read (at least tried) many permaculture books, they tend to be very scholarly and somewhat detached from reality. This book is as practical as can be. It does not over-complicate anythingI've started implementing many things from this book and they do work in practice. Be warned though: this book is about working with the nature, not about using unnatural shortcuts, so things will take time. But eventually, you will end up with a thriving, stable and productive garden that doesn't require a ton of maintenance.I want to thanks Mr Holzer for writing this book and sharing his knowledge with mankind!

This title is excellent. It has great step by step overviews of how to set up an environment for learning SSRS, and the exercises have all been thoughtfully assembled in an easy to download zip file. I found that I was able to quickly understand what I was doing easily. The text does not assume the reader is strong in SQL queries, but it does assume that you will either grasp the concepts quickly or be able to use the wizards to write targeted SQL queries. Knowledge is acquired by repeating the same actions a few times, then building on those conceptual ideas with new and fresh challenges in the material.I often find myself wishing that Microsoft Licensed VM images of its Windows OS and other projects for the sake of learning tools to avoid lengthy setups. Despite these challenges the setup of SQL Server and SSDT were very thoughtfully thought out with great step by step instructions aimed at a novice user. Overall I found the hardest challenge was knowing where to click on chart objects to find the right contextual chart menu. I found that if I clicked on the drop-down in "properties" to select an object I had a bit easier of a time. I also found that the SQL query syntax is just too small to read and is hard to code - These are all inherent issues in SSRS and Brian's book makes it a point to really learn these quirks and to see the code that should exist and to query accordingly. I'd recommend this title to anyone.

Bought this as I am new to SSRS, and was only the book I could find out there at the time. Read only about half of it, and then started playing on my own. Still use it from time to time as reference, and is always on my desk. Great thing to have if you are new to SSRS, and as I can see from websites, there is not much information out there for SSRS 2016 so this was a necessary purchase.

If you want to learn SQL Server Reporting Services then this book is hands down the best book to do that!!!!!!!! What I like most about this book is that he shows you how to do it with SSDT, Visual Studio, Report Designer, and Report Builder. Excellent book with easy to follow step by step instructions on how to create SSRS reports. All examples work. If you don't have this book for SSRS 2016 then you need it!!!

Truly an awesome book. Larson is an exceptional writer. If you want to learn SSRS or learn from a master, look no farther as this is your book. Larson will walk you through it all, using practical examples.

This book is a series of tutorials that explain and explore every facet of SSRS. The tutorials are easy to follow and taught me how to set up a report with all sorts of options.

Great for SQL Server BI folks!

I've updated my review after an initial frustration: The resource file for this book had yet to be made available by the publisher... BUT the AUTHOR stepped in and STEPPED UP after reading my review here and worked with publisher to make the materials available. I am a 3rd of the way through the book and find it the best SSRS book (have been through 3 and a user of SSRS since its inception. I bought the book to refresh my knowledge and introduce me to NEW features of SSRS for 2016. I have not gotten to the new feature examples yet so I cannot comment on those. the author does a good job of providing examples for for both SSDT/VS IDE or the Report builder suite. I use Visual Studio but read the RB suite tips also as I use that suite in a production integrated SharePoint environment. ..

Practical and useful

Amazon.com Review

Sanford Meisner has been called "the theater's best-kept secret," and Sanford Meisner on Acting by Dennis Longwell gives some insight into what techniques the hugely influential drama teacher used in his 50-plus years of work. One of the founding members of the Actors Studio (with Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, and Harold Clurman), Meisner developed his own special lessons based upon his understandings of the great Russian teacher Stanislavsky. Turning away from the sense-memory exercises common among his colleagues, his training focused instead on a realistic approach to imagination and creativity. Unlike many other educators associated with "the Method," Meisner had little tolerance for self-absorption or striving after strong emotional effect, instead preaching that clarity of purpose and efficient use of the psyche are the actor's greatest tools. Longwell's book follows a class of eight men and eight women through one of Meisner's 15-month courses at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse, with extensive transcripts taken directly from Meisner's notes to the students on the basis of their exercises. With an introduction by director Sydney Pollack, one of the many influential artists who studied with Meisner (the book includes accolades from Maureen Stapleton, Arthur Miller, Gregory Peck, and Eli Wallach), this is an excellent introduction that helps to demystify the work of a great theatrical teacher. --John Longenbaugh

From Library Journal

Meisner, a member of the Theater Guild and the Group Theater, has devoted most of 50 years to teaching acting and is one of the great unsung resources in American theater. This book is not an acting text, but a journal of a 15-month course taken by 16 adult actors. We follow them as they progress from early exercises through preparation to detailed scene work. Meisner emphasizes emotional truth and acting as the reality of doing. His students find the course difficult, but most improve markedly. Not all survive. Though Meisner is not well, he is a superb teacher and his enthusiasm is undiminished. This is required reading for all actors and those interested in acting. Thomas E. I had to read this in high school in my theatre class. After my senior year I donated it to the school. I didn't realize I would still need this as an reference after high school so I bought it again.

I read this to get a better understanding of Meisners technique and hope to learn something new. It wasn't my style at all.Though there are some gems here I took to heart about preparing, listening and emotion. This is not a very encouraging book and he seemed very arrogant.Overall a discouraging read.

I read the entire book. Meisner is funny as hell. He is real and is not afraid of being transparent with the students he taught. My favorite lessons was using the imaginary "as if" which helps a whole lot and the repetition exercise which gets you out of your head and into "living under imaginary circumstances". It gets you to react to the other person which is vital if you want to make a scene in a movie or play seem legit. If you read this book, and you should, use a high-lighter and take some notes. Loved it!

Sanford Meisner is one of the greats in the acting field. He shows his ability to teach and inspire. This book is also very well-written and understandable, even to the novice actor. Thank you Sanford, for thinking about your fellow actors enough to help them along their way.

This is a thorough book and essential for anyone who wants to study the craft of acting. I recommend it as well as other classic texts. It is important to remember that most techniques are aiming towards the same goal...truth in acting. Actors should try many techniques until things click.

If Meisner were teaching today, his bullying tactics and cult-like persona would put him out of business. Nobody would put up with that crap. I remember liking aspects of the Meisner technique, so I'm re-reading this book. He's so horrible to his students, it's painful to read. Today, this book reads more like a biography of an megalomaniacal ogre than an acting primer.

My daughter used it in h.s. to work on her acting technique. She still uses it as a valuable reference material in college.
