Review

A Bead and a Prayer is one of the most accessible and downright delightful books I have ever read on prayer itself, not to mention being far and away the most informative about the making and use of prayer beads. Vincent has given us a veritable treasure trove of history, practical counsel, and, most important, loving instruction. --Phyllis Tickle, founder of religion department, Publishers Weekly and prolific author on religion/spirituality, including "The Divine Hours" seriesA Bead and a Prayer engages our God-given senses of touch and sight to coax prayer from the head deep into the heart. A groundbreaking book even for those of us who don't have a clue how to string beads. Vincent's encouragement and instructions have convinced this novice-artist that even I can do it! This is a must-read for anyone on an intentional journey to God. --Linda Douty, Spiritual director, retreat leader, author of Praying in the Messiness of Life

When I read about using beads in prayer, I was more than a little intrigued. A former Catholic, I viewed any attempt to put a rosary in my hand as a plot to get me back to Mass, but Vincent's book deals with a new prayer tradition, that of Anglican prayer beads. And instead of having set prayers for each bead, being able to "freelance" my beads freed me to explore different ways to pray.Using Vincent's model, my craft-er daughter made a set of "manly" beads (hey, I'm old-fashioned, so sue me) of wood and ceramic beads on a leather strap. And I was delighted with the product, and with Vincent's coaching. The first time that I used the beads that I designed (see accompanying photo), I prayed for 25 minutes, completely focused on prayer, and not once mentally wandering off to create another to-do list.If you find that you have difficulty in engaging in prayer, give Vincent's book a read, and the beads a try.

An excellent little book on Christian prayer beads. The title really nails the topic as a bead and a prayer is how it works. Kristen has put together some good background to help develop a general understanding of the development and purpose of Christian prayer beads. Being an Anglican I prefer to call them Anglican Prayer Beads, but it is one in the same. The only issue I have with her writing is she adds an additional bead after the Invitatory bead, which she calls the Resurrection Bead. I understand her purpose, but that would not be my choice as an AnglicanHer book is well written with lot of good ideas for the purchase of prayer beads and making your own. That is a great concept for a individuals or a group to pursue as a project. In fact she has good outline for a class on prayer beads with well thought out study questions. I am currently teaching a class on Anglican Prayer Beads and using Kristen's book as a resource. I highly recommend A Bead and Prayer.

I was introduced to Protestant (Anglican) prayer beads and Kristen Vincent through a link from my devotional magazine, The Upper Room. Kristen has made prayer more direct and more beautiful through her blog, her beads and now her book. Her presentation is personal but organized in a simple format and makes using prayer beads a vital part of my prayer time.

I bought this book, A Bead and a Prayer, after seeing it mentioned somewhere in another book, magazine, or website (I don't remember). I had it on my wishlist for a while but finally caved. The price is a bit steep for the size of the book (I was kind of surprised when I opened the package), but the information is really neat. It's a quick and easy read walking you through what they are, how to make them, a 4 week devotional, and then examples on how to use them (even some for young children, which is actually where I plan on starting for myself to ease into it). It says that prayer beads are to be used as a tool to build your communication and relationship with God, like a hammer helps build a house. It has me really excited! The author describes her difficulty with prayer and why she struggled and it is like she is talking to me! I have ADD and a face to face conversation is hard enough, a quiet prayer time is near impossible. I have tried journaling but found it more of a distraction than a help. I am really hoping to combing the beads and journaling eventually (listing what each bead is representing so I have a record to track requests and answers). I am just shocked at how such a small, simple book could be such an inspiration. I haven't read through the devotionals yet, but am a few pages into the first one and think they will all be equally helpful. It was worth it just for the intro chapter(s) that I know will help jump start my lagging prayer life.I plan on putting together a program series for the teens in our church so they can make their own then work through the devotional.

I own a set of Kristen Vincent's prayer beads and they are truly a work of love. This book does compliment the beads, but my expectations...solely based on the price of the Kindle version of this book, were not met. While the book is meant to be read over several weeks, I read it in 30 minutes. It does have some faithful content and does help the reader understand how prayer beads can be used to talk with God. I would have given this four stars had the pricing been more in line with similar books that have very limited content.

This is a great way to start using prayer beads if you have never used them. An interesting summary of their history and she gives instructions for making your own (don't buy them! Make them--very fun and I've now taught dozens to make prayer beads). There are prepared prayers and fill in formated prayers. The author does a great job encouraging your own personal expression as you design your prayer beads as well as your prayers! Some of them are simply to take a deep breath in and listen as you move across the beads. I highly recommend this prayer tool for the young and old alike!Kristine Webb

This is a great introduction to using Anglican prayer beads (not to be confused with the Roman Catholic rosary). It not only explains HOW to use prayer beads with different types of prayers, but also WHY use them. And as a bonus, there is a chapter on how to make your own set of prayer beads. If you have never used prayer beads, this is an excellent primer and is a wonderful way to begin a Lenten discipline. If you're already using prayer beads, this won't offer much that's new or different.

I have enjoyed reading this book and doing the exercises in it. The author offers a coupon to her Etsy store so that you can buy a set of prayer beads or a kit to make your own. Definitely a help in prayer for a mind that wanders like mine does.

As Dr. Fung states in his book “You might think that evolution would perfect our damage control responses, allowing us to live forever. But evolution doesn’t care if you age or even if you survive. It ensures the survival of the species, not the individual. Once you’ve had children, your genes will survive even if you don’t, so there is no natural selection toward longer lived species.”But that doesn’t mean you can’t optimize your health approach to live as long and as healthy as possible. Clearly one of the foundational strategies of achieving a long life in which you maintain all your function into old age would be to make certain you have the healthiest diet possible.Dr. Fung has done an excellent job at summarizing the best tips in his latest book. What I found particularly fascinating was his review of how much protein you need and the timing of the protein. This is important because one of the keys to living long and healthy is to make sure you activate a process called autophagy.Autophagy is from the Greek works for self-eating and describes a process in which your body targets damaged and defective intracellular elements and sends them to lysosomes where they are digested to their constitutive elements so they can be recycled into new proteins and structures like mitochondria.By optimizing the amount and timing of your protein levels you can prevent activation of mTOR that will inhibit this valuable process of autophagy repair and rebuilding. The mTOR pathway is crucial as it is the most potent stimulus to shutting down autophagy. The key is figuring out your “Goldilock’s” dose of protein.Too little protein causes disease. Too much protein causes disease. What’s the right amount? Too little protein can lead to devastating muscle loss and if you have too much that will shut down autophagy. Dr. Fung provides extensive information on not only how to calculate your optimal protein dose but also discusses the timing. I recently interviewed him on my website and if you type in his name in my search engine you can see his video interview in which he provides some of this information in greater detail. His book also extensively reviews intermittent fasting and calorie restriction which is the only non-pharmacological method of consistently extending life span and protecting against many age related diseases. We all know that clean water is essential for health but he has a large section on how tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water and how you can wisely use it to improve your health. His co-author Dr. Nicolantonio does a wonderful job of describing the most important nonessential amino acid, glycine and how it can serve to improve your health through increasing your glutathione levels and many vital proteins. So if you are looking for some solid recommendations to improve your health I would strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of the Longevity Solution.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I have read two of Dr. Fung's other books: Obesity Code and his Guide to Fasting, articles from his IDM blog, as well as watched many talks and videos by him on youtube.I eagerly pre-ordered this book, as I was hoping to reconcile the conflicting messages from the low-carb lifestyle community and the longevity recommendations from other books, such as Blue Zones, Brain Rules for Aging Well, Spark!, and Aging with Grace (a wonderful book on the Nun Study). The book sort of answers this question by promoting a plant-based (but not vegetarian) diet (similar to Blue Zones and other evidence promoting plant-based) within confined eating windows (intermittent fasting, which brings the benefits of light ketosis). I like this idea as I find it much less constraining than ketogenic regimes, and I also find it very easy to follow.Having said that, the book felt more like a rough draft compilation of one-off recommendations (chapter after chapter about beverage choices...), mixed in with blatant product placement ads right in the text. I found this very disappointing, especially after Fung's straightforward and common-sense messages from Obesity Code and Guide to Fasting. If you are expecting the same quality of work, you will be disappointed. If you are just beginning your book research into aging well, try any of the other titles I've listed above for a more well-rounded approach. I am not afraid of getting old, I am afraid of getting *old and sick*. Other books have addressed this concern for me much more completely than Longevity Solution. If you are brand-new to Dr. Fung's work, I would recommend his other two titles- Guide to Fasting and Obesity Code (I am not overweight, but read this book because of a family history of both middle-aged weight gain and diabetes, I found it extremely useful for preventative practices.)

Disappointed in Dr Fung! I read your books on fasting and obesity but these book contradicts much written in the other books. I don't recommend itðŸ˜Å¾

A lot of the information such as calorie restriction, fasting, and some food choices is excellent. However, foods to fight cancer is mostly missing. I would recommend Richard Beliveau's book FOODS TO FIGHT CANCER and checking the internet for articles about food compounds mentioned in the book and how they are being studied in regard to cancer. It's difficult to get everything right and the book's mentioning casein as a protein source gets called into question by the article "A Milk Protein, Casein, as a Proliferation Promoting Factor in Prostate Cancer Cells". Also, the exercise recommendations seem outdated and are missing precautions that would have saved me from needing knee replacements. As author Doug McGuff, M.D. says in his book BODY BY SCIENCE Kenneth Cooper could be called " the man who destroyed America's knees". I think running would be fine if there are sand dunes to run on to reduce the impact on kneesand if your skeleton is perfectly aligned. Also, i would recommend periodic X-rays by an orthopedic surgeon to check for cartilage wear especilly on the nees and shoulders. Resistance training, as well as running, can accelerate cartilage loss. Bodybuilder Frank Zane, a four-time Mr. Olympia winner, has had shoulder replacements.Again, it would be impossible to cover everything in a single book. So I found the book a good read and would recommend it.

Review

“Young children love to pretend they’re baby animals—it’s an opportunity to explore the world in new ways, while ensuring their nurturers remain close at hand. In novelist Marr’s (the Wicked Lovely series) first picture book, a mother plays along, imagining her baby and herself as six different animals as she lovingly tracks its development. ‘Then you whimpered and meowed, and I thought you might be a thirsty kitten,’ she says. ‘I offered you some milk so you would not be hungry.’ White’s (Adventures with Barefoot Critters) restrained detailing, smudged colors, and frequent use of circular framings give her watercolors a vintage-looking, pastoral prettiness. It’s also fun to see how the mother retains her essential ‘momness’ regardless of what species she assumes: as a lizard, she wears green pearls and carries an over-the-shoulder bag. With its emphasis on motherly pacifying, this warmhearted story is best suited for younger readers who are still happy to consent to all the tender doting that their caretakers are willing to dish out.”—Publishers Weekly   “A mother’s observations of her new baby lead to a series of sweet comparisons to various animals. ‘When I met you, you were small and trembling, and I thought you might be a little bunny. / I held you close so you were warm.’ Teen author Marr (Made for You, 2014, etc.) uses playful yet comforting language in her picture-book debut. The baby’s squirming kicks remind her of a ‘lost kangaroo’; a lifting of the child’s head makes her think of a ‘curious lizard’; and the little one’s howl seems like that of a ‘lonely wolf.’ Each of the child’s behaviors leads to a tender action taken by the mother: tucking the baby in, offering milk, and giving a bath. Each time a new creature is introduced, White gently changes the dominant color in the muted pastel palette of her watercolor and gouache illustrations. That hue is also reflected in the hand-lettered text, giving the overall design of the book a vintage feel. When the baby smiles, the mother knows ‘You are not a bunny-roo-lizard-wolf-kitten-piggy. You are my baby.’ The final page shows the curled-up infant asleep in a pile of blankets. A lovely package, this quiet title will be best as a gift book for new moms eager to read aloud to the newest members of their families.”—Kirkus Reviews   “Using examples from nature in which animals care for their young, a human mother describes how she cares for her own baby. She cites bunnies, who are held close; joeys, who are carried in mom’s pouch; lizards, who enjoy a patch of warm sun; wolves, who snuggle cozily in a den; kittens, who drink milk; and piggies, who calm down after a bath. When her own baby smiles, Mom replies, ‘You are not a bunny-roolizard-wolf-kitten-piggy. You are my baby.’ Marr’s soothing text (‘When I met you, you were small and trembling, and I thought you might be a little bunny. I held you close so you were warm’) should prove calming for lap-sitting infants just beginning to focus on illustrations. White’s watercolor and gouache artwork exhibits a cozy feel, with realistically drawn animals posed against simple, recognizable settings. This makes a good choice for one-on-one sharing or as a baby story-hour selection paired with Mary Murphy’s I Kissed the Baby! (2003).”—Booklist

My 8 month old daughter loves this book. I read it before nap time and she just sits and looks at the pictures and listens to the words. Very calming, sweet book!!!

I love this book. The story. The illustration. It's great. Unfortunately, my book is gross. It has nasty dried smears of god knows what, stains from what looks like coffee, and torn chunks (mind you it is a board book) such a lovely book, Some thing that could be saved for your kids kids. 5 stars because the seller is refunding me. Will donate this copy and purchase a new copy

We LOVE this book. We have been reading it from the first month of baby's life. She is now 8 months old and the words of the story are so true. You don't realize it until time passes and then you make the connection. It's so sweet. I also love the illustrations not the typical bold in your face colors which is a pleasant surprise. It is also a quick read which is good with a moving baby!

The story and the illustrations are seriously adorable. Love the book. I had a problem with the book being pretty dirty which was a little disappointing. I think Amazon should package each book in something as to not allow them to get dirty/banged up in the warehouse or in transit (wherever it may happen). Didn't take away from the book though, just a little annoying when I'm trying to gift a book and it already has dirt on it.

The positive: The illustrations are absolutely adorable! They made me want to buy more books illustrated by Teagan White! The less positive: The story isn't that interesting (to me or my baby). It's about how a baby takes various actions (such as looking around, whimpering, etc.) and based on each of those actions, the mom thinks her baby is a different animal, but ultimately she realizes that he is not an animal, but her baby. While the concept is kind of cute, the story just isn't that fun to read to a child, in my opinion.

Very cute way of relating newborn struggles to your little one! Adorable little story. I bought this for Easter but it's not really about a bunny. Love it either way!

Purchased this book as a present for a newborn. A very sweet story about parents' enduring love, and the caring things they do to comfort their little one when timid, hungry, tired, etc. The pages are beautifully illustrated and visually enchanting - there are brightly colored pictures and brush lettered text

SUCH a sweet book!! We own the hardcover version and I just bought the board book version to have as well so my daughter can hold it (she’s 9 months) without tearing the pages. Beautiful illustrations and the sweetest story!! Dare you not to tear up reading this to your precious little one!

This book is beautifully illustrated! The story is also cute. Just a fair warning, with new mom hormones I cried like a baby reading this to my daughter. It's so sweet!

This came with the expected master score, showing both violin parts above the piano part. However, only the one separate score for the second violin part was included. The separate score for first violin part was missing. Is the first violin supposed to be looking over the shoulder of the pianist to play this? Seems something is wrong here. Why not one star? Well, this is Bach after all....

What I have got is a piano score. There's no violin score in it.

Both violin parts needed. received only Violin 1 parts...two of them and the piano.Another customer received two violin 2 parts. Maybe we could get together???

If you're ordering this... you pretty much already know you wanted it and ordered this edition on purpose. If you don't know the piece (which... if you're a violinist at this level... you do..) look it up.As to the other review that it is a "copied" version... This is not true. This is a real edition... In fact the one that OMEA recommends for solo and ensemble contest. Maybe this person has never purchased a Schirmer edition.I received exactly what I ordered and am happy with my purchase.

The fingerings are great. They help you play the concerto much easier. Its Bach! What is not to like!

The book that I received is just a "photocopy" version. The front and back covers also "sort of look like original" yellowish thicker paper. Also, they have done the worst stapling job right on the middle page, so the book self opens at the same page because of those stupid staples. Including the shipping cost, I paid more than 10 dollars for this book, but in return I did not even get a decent quality item in the mail. I could have printed out a waaay better copy from the versions that are available here and there online. Totally disappointed.

Our book arrived with both separate violin books and the complete score. All three parts were included. Very happy !
