I found this to be a fascinating book, I could hardly put it down. I found the fact that a highly educated woman successfully played an uneducated woman. How difficult it much have been not to accidently just say something or use words above her station in life. She lived day to day with the fear of being caught and sent to a concentration camp. Edith only had one examination to take to receive her J. D. degree in law with extra training as a judge. She arrived to take the last examination and was refused admittance and removed from the university because she was a Jew, from that moment on her life was in a downward turmoil. She was sent off to a labor camp for Jews doing hard physical labor in the fields. Before this she had never worked physically in her life. On a trip, back to Vienna she took the star off her coat, slipped away as she left the train and passed as an Aryan. She got papers from a catholic friend and moved to Munich where she worked as a nurse’s aide at a Red Cross Hospital. The only job she could get that did not check her papers against the National Registry was the Red Cross. She did not want to get her friend in trouble so she had to stay out of sight. She married Werner Vetter a Nazi Party member. She had a daughter which made her a popular woman with the Nazis. Werner was captured on the Eastern Front by the Russians and sent to Siberia. The book is well written and the description of daily life under the Nazis was interesting. All of Edith’s paper are at the Holocaust Memorial in Washington, D. C. She resides in Israel. It was her daughter that pushed her to tell her story. The book is 330 pages long. I read this as an e-book on my Kindle app for my iPad.

I was born in the late 1930's. I heard about the war, the sirens warned us in our neighborhoods that we must stay in our homes, cover the windows so no light shines out, the Wardens walked the blocks to make sure all was secure.. Then the siren would sound & we could continue with our lives, This was in Chicago, Illinois... After reading Edith Beer's story I have gone back in my memory at each month & year Edith wrote about to think about my life then a child... I was so sadden to feel so ignorant of the circumstances that were taking place in Europe where real men were so vicious, & uncaring ...The depth of her story made me feel I was in her time & feeling her sorrow then mine for her... The only wish I have is that the end of the story the pictures that were shown on my Kindle were so tiny & the documents unreadable that i tried to come back to look the book up to see if I could locate them.. But no....Such good reading

I've read a lot of Holocaust books -- fiction and non-fiction -- so I wondered if there would be anything new in this memoir. This was new, not just because of her situation -- a Jewish woman married to a Nazi party member -- but also in her description of what it was like to be one of the thousands of slave laborers working in Germany and occupied countries. I suspect that very few slave laborers managed to survive, and those who did probably didn't want to revisit that experience. One caveat though, about the "Nazi Officer's Wife" in the title -- it's deceptive. Edith's husband was a party member when they met but he wasn't high in the party and he wasn't even in the army until they'd been married for some time. So a reader looking for insight into what it was like to be married to an officer or a high-ranking Nazi party member won't find much in that regard. The book is rich in detail without wallowing or sugar-coating. Her memories feel very honest, not imagined or colored. We meet Edith and her family and friends when she's in her teens and this background makes what happens later very affecting. She's strong and resilient but is often insecure and afraid, and rightfully so, of course. We follow Edith after the war, when she worked for the Communist regime. That was something new to me and while I'm glad it was included, I started to wonder if this woman was ever going to find peace and security. It's one woman's story of survival, very well-written. It was hard to put down, and I'd love to read more about Edith's life after she left Europe.

As the daughter of a holocaust surviver who lost his parents and siblings during WWII Poland, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Edith Hahn's memoir. She tells a story that is heart wrenching. A story not very different from my own father's.Living through war and its atrocities is mind boggling and bewildering. Being able be a "u-boat" as Edith was in order to survive the war is incredibly amazing and nothing short of a miracle.During the war Edith marries a Nazi, hiding the fact that she was a Jew. She was a loving wife and mother and subservient to her husband. After the war, she returned to being her true self and takes back her life as a Jew and a Judge. She is a true hero to me.Thank you for sharing your amazing heroistic survival with the world.

I grew up with the Atari 2600, and one of it's younger siblings, an Atari 1200XL 8-bit home computer. I learned to program on the 1200XL, and eventually learned a lot about its graphical and sound capabilities. Based on that knowledge, I thought had a basic idea of what the 2600 was capable of... this book proved me wrong. After reading this book -- a book I plan to read cover-to-cover again, to refresh my memory -- I gained incredible respect for what 2600 programmers were (and still are) capable of eeking out of the machine. Coming from the relative luxurious comfort of the 8-bit computer, with a real framebuffer, character/tile graphics, etc., it's amazing that games like Pitfall! exist at all, let alone are fast, fun, and highly playable! If you're interested in retrocomputing or retrogaming, computer & video game history, or just enjoy learning about how technology works, this book is a must.

This book is not quite what I expected, but I enjoyed it just the same. I'd been expecting a thorough description of the VCS hardware, hopefully down to the (tiny) memory map, and at least a few code examples showing how the screen is generated, sprite multiplexing, etc. There is much more information at this level online, so you can learn about it; just don't expect much more than a cursory examination from this book. With that, the book has a few aims. One is to show how the restrictions imposed by the VCS hardware led to extraordinary leaps of creativity to produce playable and, in some instances, graphically impressive games. The authors do a nice job here of balancing the presentation of the dry technical aspects with sheer reverence for the programmers and designers.Another aim is more long-reaching: showing how some VCS games were the genesis (or an important part) of game genres that still exist today. This might be more of a stretch. There was a lot of arcade video game activity at the same time that the VCS ruled the living room, and many of the VCS titles were ports, i.e. they contributed little to moving the field forward. The book is part of a series called 'Platform Studies'. I'm not a media type, so I don't really know what this means. There's a fair amount of lip service paid to this concept in the book, but it seems a little contrived, as if the editor insisted that 'Platform Studies' be mentioned a certain number of times. Is the VCS an object lesson in platform studies? I don't know. What I do know is that it is probably the simplest programmable gaming system one could imagine. It's a brilliant design that offloaded all the difficult jobs onto the programmers to keep the hardware cost as low as possible. As such it deserves to be recognized for the milestone that it was, and this book does that, and in an enjoyable way.

I still own my original Atari 2600 and never bothered to learn about the secrets of its inner workings (the exception being joystick repair), despite it launching a lifelong interest in software, graphics, and electronics. I picked up this book on impulse after the finely tuned A.I. software of amazon recommendations discovered the algorithm to target 'human nostalgia'. When it arrived it I could not put it down... definitely a great read for anyone interested in the history of gaming regardless of your technical level. The book goes beyond tech as it touches on the market, the companies and personalities involved, the social and consumer norms of the times. Of particular interest (to myself) were the hardware design choices made that confound and make you cringe by today's standards. 'Racing the Beam' gives you the insight to understand these choices by providing the financial limits, competitive landscape, design goals, and technological context present at Atari's release. It is still hard to believe that developing back then was more than just heavy hardware and software constraints (128 *bytes of RAM* and this review is well over 1500 bytes)... The developers were often a one-man team juggling programming, art direction, UX/UI, screenwriting, sound design, and project management while devising logic tricks for precious source compression. No physics APIs or game platform builder or asset store to save the day, oops, I meant deadline. This is real insight on the Pioneering spirit. There is a whole chapter dedicated to Adventure. Very cool! Would be a good primer for those eagerly waiting to read Warren Robinett's Annotated Adventure. Yars Revenge (my favorite) and Pitfall is in there too. This was my first taste of a platform studies book and I look forward to picking up I Am Error: The Nintendo Family Computer / Entertainment System Platform (Platform Studies) despite never owning an NES.

I'm not one to leave super negative reviews, so I won't, the author did put a good amount of work into this, but should have put just alittle bit more. This book disappointed me personally, you may find it good and relevant though. This book contains OK info, but it is written similar to "Wellness Mama", in that it is speaking to women, only wellness mama has pictures.TOP 3 REASON I DON'T LIKE THIS1) NO PICTURES...Not one (real) picture in the whole book. I don't know if they tried to save printing cost, but the only pictures you will find are obscure doodles here and their. It would have helped me (a beginner) to see some step by step pics, or at least what the finished product should look like.2) FOR FEMALES ONLY...So i am a guy who likes organic skin care, does that mean I'm a wimp or something? Probably! who cares... This book has one estranged after shave face tonic that I could find... It does however include recipes for Douches pg 325, Vaginitis Relief pg 326, Breast Massage pg 328, and some belly butters. To be fair this is in a "Female Section", but there is no male section in the book with the rest catering to females too.3) TABLE OF CONTENTSFinding a recipe is narrowed down to the chapters beginning only. Their are 9 chapters and over 350 pages, with only 9 direct page references. Their is NOT ONE direct reference to a single recipe by page # in the table of contents... it will be a headache if you want to use this as a reference or find something quickly.SUMMARYIf you are a guy, don't buy this.If you want real pictures of any kind don't buy this.If you like an in depth table of contents don't buy this.Perhaps, for one of you lucky ladies out their, this is a dream come true, but for me it is $13+ wasted...

Recently purchased four* natural cosmetic books and like all of them for different reasons, but if I would have just one, this is the book I'd choose. I trust the expertise of the author, Stephanie Tourles, a licensed esthetician and holistic skin care specialist, for her rationale of each ingredient and technique. The book has taught me a lot, I'm still reading it and still learning. Every recipe I have tried has been very simple, and perfect. For example: "Pineapple . . . Cosmetic Properties and Uses: Containing bromelain, a protein-digesting enzyme, pineapple dissolves dead surface skin cells, resulting in softer, smoother skin." I used fresh mashed pineapple as a mask and it brightened and plumped up my skin. It was amazing and what could be simpler?I think some people might mistakenly believe that if it's simple and natural it can't be as effective as complicated, commercial chemical masks that are made with toxic chemicals. I don't know how to convince people that simple and natural is in every way better for you, your skin, and the planet. But if a book can help convince a few people, who are skeptical, as I was, then kudos to the author. I'm very grateful to you.*The other three books in order of my favorite to least preference are: 200 Tips, Techniques & Recipes for Natural Beauty by Shannon Buck, 101 Easy Homemade Products for your Skin, Health & Home by Jan Berry, and Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty Products by Sally Trew.

Very disappointed, recipes contain to many ingredients, most that are not common household ingredients and would have to purchase. I use a lot of essential oils and I feel recipes contain excessive amounts of essential oils. A lot of essential oils should not be used by pregnant women and should be noted on each recipe. Was disappointed with shampoo recipes as they called for "natural chemical free shampoo base or gentle baby shampoo", I was looking to make my products from scratch of which some recipes require a premade ingredient.

My main gripe (and it is the same gripe I have with many of these books) is the ingredients list. First, there is the issue of the number of ingredients, there really is no need for more than five ingredients in any DIY skincare product. Second, the price for some of these ingredients, specifically the essential oils can be prohibitive. And lastly, availability, some of the herbs and extracts are not readily available. It all becomes a little much. On that note, if you do buy this book, I do advise beginners not to get sucked into all of the fancy essential oils and carrier oils. As a licensed esthetician and certified aromatherapist, I highly recommend keeping it very simple and make the products using inexpensive and readily available ingredients such as coconut oil, grapeseed oil, lavender essential oil and just use regular distilled water in place of hydrosols and teas. If you really like the product then invest in the more expensive ingredients. If you are looking for a book that is fun and uses ingredients you can find in your own kitchen I recommend Babushka's Beauty Secrets: Old World Tips for a Glamorous New You

I was struggling with the thought of continuing to use harsh skin care products. I stumbled upon this book and had to try it. The results were amazing after trying a couple recipes on my face. I used a recipe that really helped to even out the redness and small pimples in my skin and it actually worked. Every recipe is organic and therefore safe for your skin, there are 175 different recipes for doing different things for your skin, and the ingredients are easy to find and pretty inexpensive. I plan on trying out hopefully all of the other recipes in due time. I do recommend!
