Review

"Scurrilous, sexy, stupid, satirical, scatological, side-splitting, and probably something else beginning with 's,' Jody Enders's translation of twelve French farces is a real discovery that goes a long way to readjusting our perception of the Middle Ages. Enders is a great champion of comedy at its most vulgar and hilarious. She points out that however silly or banal these farces may appear to us, they nonetheless confront the real controversies of their day over the law, politics, religion, social order, or the battle of the sexes. Thoroughly grounded in her academic approach to the subject, Enders nevertheless writes with liveliness and humor and wit. She is unafraid to reference modern comedy in her translations and insists on the primacy of performance in assessing these comedies from half a millennium ago."—Terry Jones

I am completely baffled by Kiri's review of Enders' The Farce of the Fart. This book is a TREASURE! I am a professor and theater director, and I have found The Farce of the Fart to be an invaluable teaching resource. Enders has done a rare thing: she has ensured that her brilliant translations are ready for the stage. It is obvious that she has thought carefully about how these delightful plays might be produced and she has considered the actor in her work. Some of the BEST work I have seen students do in my acting classes is when they perform plays from The Farce of the Fart. Enders' translations require students to consider elements like comedic timing, double entendre, physicality, and character relationships, all the things we want acting students to think about. Best of all The Farce of the Fart makes medieval literature accessible, thought-provoking, and FUN. I look forward to many more years of using Enders' work in my courses and I cannot wait for the new editions of farces to be released!

Super fun. We think of the Middle Ages as a literary black hole. Thanks to Jody Enders we have a glimpse of how vibrant the theatrical life on the street was.

Enders has wisely chosen the route of “adapted” rather than “literal” translations, preserving farce’s characteristic exuberance by inserting, where appropriate, “an extra line, an extra term, an extra mimed scene, an extra nonspeaking character, an extra possible musical number, or an extra name (especially for the many unnamed female characters)." Her aim throughout is to make farce a living tradition again, one that remains imbued with the “precious essence” of a medieval genre but that also merges gleefully and ironically with contemporary idioms and themes: “sitcoms, stand-up comedy, Saturday Night Live, political gaffes, widespread litigiousness, the excesses of university life, twentieth- and twenty-first-century slang, and whatever music rises and falls on the pop charts, especially country music." As improbable and unscholarly as all this may sound, "The Farce of the Fart" manages to be both uproariously funny (I regularly disturbed people around me by laughing out loud) and intellectually rigorous (my copy is filled with marginal notes, even though I have read these plays many times). Medievalists who cannot read the original texts should certainly heed Enders’s warning that her translations frequently depart from strict literalism. But these departures are not only wildly obvious; they are also nearly always flagged with an endnote. And at the end of the day, what really matters is that Enders is capable of striking a balance between farce’s historical specificity and issues of contemporary relevance. I regularly marveled at her ingenious strategies for incorporating references to today’s lived realities into her farces while remaining essentially true to the medieval theatrical world from which those farces emerged. A signal achievement in theatrical translation, and I can't wait to read more!

Sadly I was beyond disappointed in this book. The bio of the author gave me great hope that this would be a witty and reasonably accurate rendition of the original French plays. What I found was plays translated and then butchered by what appears to be 1950's American doggerel. The resultant plays are truly awful. My only hope was that the book might have included the original plays in French so I could translate them myself. But no. The author does include a few examples of where she did a straight translation into English, then showing how she translated that into hideous slang.I really wish I could find a redeeming feature to this book, but I am sorry, I can't. Maybe the patois the author used works in the US, but is shudderingly awful in any other English speaking country. It is so disappointing that a professor of French and Theatre produced this instead of what could have been a great book reviving these fun farces.

I’ve been following Catra and her story since I became a runner a couple of years ago. The more I read about her, the more I identified with her and I’ve always felt a connection with her. I always hoped that she would write a book someday. My fitness journey is very similar to hers as I too believe that running has saved me. It is my therapy. When I’m out on the trails, I feel a spiritual connection between myself and nature and it’s unlike any feeling I’ve ever felt before. Catra describes this perfectly in her book and at times I felt like she was speaking for me. I finished the book in two days as I was unable to put it down after I started it! I look up to Catra and I hope to advance in my running as she has. Catra is not only a great runner, but she is also a great person who truly cares for others. I am a social worker so this concern for others is also very near and dear to me. I’ve been telling friends and co-workers who are interested in following a healthy lifestyle about Catra and encouraging them to read her story. I know that she will inspire them just as she has inspired me! I want to thank her for putting herself out there and sharing her story!!!

Started reading this book the minute it loaded onto my PC and never put it down. From the first chapter it becomes very clear that Catra Corbett ain't no sissy. "Are you f-ing kidding me? I answered. "I came to run a f-ing hundred miler. I'm not stopping now." This hardcore outlook on life is what carried her thru from addiction to Ultramarathons, with many learning experiences and painful heartache along the way. You might think this book is about running, but it is about so much more. This story is about a woman with a huge heart who refused to give up on herself, even when she lost everything. It's the story of finding strength in yourself out on the trail and learning that putting your best foot forward is all we have sometimes. It's about loss and grief and personal fortitude. It's about lightning storms and blisters and discovering a community of friends along the way. It's about loving others and learning to love yourself. It about one woman's journey to epic badassery! Oh, and it's about wiener dogs, too!

I started this book on a Friday night (Kindle version) and picked it back up the next day to finish it. I couldn’t read it fast enough!Catra’s story resonates with me. Not the drugs part, but dealing with the pain and loss of a parent. I’ve been a runner as long as I can remember - until my Mom died a couple of years ago. After finishing this book, I pulled out my dusty running shoes and ran. I’m still running, and if I ever see a tiny ball of energy with pink hair and tattoos on the AZ trails, I’ll thank Catra in person. The book is a good read and caught my attention from the start. As I said, I pretty much read it a day. I love the added photos. And I like how real and honest Catra is.Anyone looking for an inspiring, honest, gritty, mind-boggling (her endurance is insane!) and heart-warming story should read this book!

If you need something to get you inspired or motivated, please read this book. Catra captures true perseverance in her book. You will cry. You will laugh. It will leave you wanting to do something bigger and better.

I first heard of the Dirt Diva back in 2004 when she first set a John Muir Trail speed record, and have been Facebook friends for a long time, as I post JMT records on my website. I've never met her in person, though crossed paths on Mission Peak once. Her exploits over the years have been amazing, and this book gives some insight into what makes Catra run. It is a good read, and I am sure, encouraging to anyone trying to overcome an addiction. It is also an insightful view of just what gets someone into meth.If you are looking for a story of fortitude, of overcoming pain, of total focus, then this book will keep you engaged. If you are looking for the story of what makes ultra athletes, this is the story for you. If you are looking for a way out of addiction, this is the story for you.

This memoir is written in a straightforward, non-floof style, with some repetition. It doesn't need a bunch of flair though, it's an amazing book because the "badass," "epic" events described are truly that.Ex-goth clubber, ex-meth addict, Catra Corbett has run 100 mile runs more than 100 times and more than 220 ultramarathons. She has run every day since Nov. 2012 and ran 50 consecutive hours on her 50th birthday. It's hard to even fathom some of her accomplishments and credits in the ultrarunning world i.e. her speed record on the 425 mile John Muir Trail. In addition:She's run those miles on a raw vegan, largely fruitarian, diet. She participated in the Icebreaker relay run across the United States to raise awareness of mental health. She's fostered rescue dogs and adopted one fearful dog who has become her running companion. Love this quote: "TruMan saved me because I wanted a better life for him, and that gave me a better life for me too." I'd love to see another memoir focused on her adventures with her dog.

Catra Corbett has been one of my biggest running inspirations for a while now, but this book made me love her even more. I had no idea about her past before picking this book up, I just knew that she was a badass female runner over 50 who I definitely wanted to be like. Learning about her story was really impactful and made me know that I definitely want to run an ultra one day, and that she is even more amazing than I could have imagined. If you're a fan of running, badass women, adorable doxies, or are interested in narratives about overcoming addiction, this book is probably for you. There are a few minor editing issues that made me want to figure out how to offer to edit all of her work for free (because I love her, and therefore could never charge her), but the story more than made up for the odd misplaced word. So if you're a grammar freak...calm down. It will be okay. Enjoy the book anyway.
