Rosemary Sutcliff's classic, The Eagle of the Ninth, is an amazing tale set in 2nd century Britain during Rome's occupation. It is such a captivating tale, that we used it as part of our daughter's literature curriculum. Because it was written in 1954, the language is very rich and vivid. It helps the reader to imagine the sights and sounds and smells of early history. The story is compelling as you follow Marcus on his quest to find out what really happened to his father's legion and reclaim the honor. There are so many fascinating characters, such as Esca, Marcus's freed slave, and the Romans who chose Britain as their home. It is a beautifully written tale and well researched. Hadrian's Wall, the Roman fortresses, the wildness of Caledonia...all of it came alive in Sutcliff's story.

This is an attractive and solid hardcover, cloth over boards, edition of this book. Seems well bound and paper is of good quality. The story itself is an often recommended fictional history based on the Roman occupation of Britain, particularly a true mystery and an artifact unearthed in more recent excavation. The writing is descriptive and the plot interesting. It is probably above the level of most eight year olds in current society, but read aloud with some explanation it is still written well enough to hold the attention of that age group. Probably better individual reading for the typical thirteen and up reader.Through this story the reader can really see the misty, rainy region of Britain; feel the uncertain peace and ambiguous relationship between the Roman conquerors and the subdued (and not so subdued) tribes of Britain. The reader can understand both sides of the conflict and see into both societies. It is a great book to bring history alive. I particularly appreciate this author for her focus on British history that often is looked over.

I've always been partial to historical fiction with ancient settings, and have been particularly interested in Roman Britain ever since reading Anya Seton's The Mistletoe and the Sword several years ago. Although there is a plethora of fiction set in Roman Britain out there, I have avoided it all assuming that it would be filled with sex, profanity and violence. So when I recently heard about Rosemary Sutcliff's series of novels set in Roman Britain, and that they were written in the 1950s for young adults, I knew I had to give her a try.I was very pleased with The Eagle of the Ninth; so pleased, in fact, that I have ordered the next three books in the series. There are many elements of The Eagle that are indicative of the fact it was written for a young adult audience: the simplicity of the plot; the non-complexity of the characters and their interactions; the relative shortness of the book (200 pages); the focus on a young man and his friendships, as well as his quest to find out the truth behind his father's death and the disappearance of his Legion. But while The Eagle of the Ninth is focused on themes aimed at a younger audience, the author's style is one that will captivate readers of all ages. The focus and tone of the novel should appeal equally to men and women. Her descriptions are lovely and evocative and her language is sophisticated. I recommend keeping a dictionary at hand, as she uses many words and phrases that are unfamiliar to modern readers (or to this reader, anyway). While the meanings of most of them can be approximately determined from the context, if you're a word nerd like me you're probably going to want to look them up.The Eagle of the Ninth is a simple story that is well-written and pleasing. I, for one, am hooked and look forward to reading many more books by this author.

I've been a big fan of Rosemary Sutcliff since I first discovered her, with this book, more than 45 years ago. I bought this for my 13 year old great niece as a Christmas gift. I think Ms Sutcliff is unsurpassed as a writer of historical fiction--with substance--for kids.

When my youngest son was in grammar school, he really disliked reading. He had no patience for it. I made a list of books that I hoped would pique his interest, and I read a chapter each night until we finished several titles I had picked. One of those books was Rosemary Sutcliffe's "Eagle of the Ninth." Sure, he was old enough to read it on his own. But we both looked forward to each evening's chapter.Today, my 21-year-old son is an avid reader with a broad range of interests. These days, I take reading recommendations from HIM.I was very pleased to see that this historic novel has been reissued in a beautiful hardcover edition, complete with illustrations and an attached ribbon marker. The story is a straight-forward adventure involving young Roman officer Marcus, his slave Esca, and a wolf. It takes place in 2nd Century Britain and is based on a true story. This is the first in a series, and it was made into a movie starring Channing Tatum ("The Eagle").Sutcliffe did her homework and the novel makes the ancient world come alive. This book belongs on every child's shelf, and your son or daughter will be able to appreciate this particular edition for many years, long enough to pass on to the next generation.

I had high hopes when this movie came out because I've loved the book since I was a teenager. The movie tampered with the plot to the point where it was hardly recognizable. A couple of key characters were eliminated. Esca's character was changed. And the two main characters go off on their life-threatening mission without even having the plausible cover story they used in the book. This movie is a cartoonish butchering of a beloved classic.

This book is a must read for security professionals (cyber security as well as physical security) in order to get a glimpse behind the curtain of the attackers we deal with. It shows the tricks that these criminals use as well as their very real weaknesses, which are often an arrogance and overconfidence. These people are not superhuman but even the more talented ones are looking for others to show them what vulnerabilities can be exploited. As someone in the profession, this book yields valuable clues into those that made headlines over the years and how they were able to steal credit card and other info. Often when we first learn about an incident there are precious few details that are revealed. For those generally interested in one aspect of the hacker world this book should be an interesting read without being full of too much technical detail. You get a look at the personalities and backgrounds of those involved on the criminal side and ultimately the lesson is clear, these folks do not lead a glamorous life and eventually many get caught.

After reading the first 10 chapters or so, there was no way I was going to finish reading this book. As a focal point for the book, there's not much to like to the main character, Max Vision. Six months later, I picked up Kingpin one more time and I have to say the book finishes well. After a thorough introduction to the Max Vision, the book goes on to describe the Cyber Crime world over the course of the early 2000's. The vulnerabilities in newly networked systems enabled a large number of cyber criminals to make a good living on credit card fraud that the banking industry was loathe to bring to the light to the victims of these crimes. The creativity of the FBI after a few bumbling mistakes is also described in detail. In the end, this is an interesting book about cops and robbers in the emerging Internet age.

This book is an absolute thriller from beginning to end and, as a form of informational entertainment, is well worth the price. The narrative is fantastic and Kevin Poulsen describes the events in a way that inspires both intrigue and admonishment.Delving deeply into the story of black hat hacker, Max Butler, the book takes you turn by turn through the complex and unsurprisingly dog-eat-dog world of the underground carding scene. A place where illegal fortunes are made and lost at the click of a mouse, the swipe of a card, and the rattle of a keyboard. The cat and mouse aspect of Keith Mularski, the FBI agent charged with penetrating the underground criminal element and Max Butler plays out with so much drama and intensity that it would not surprise me if a translation to the big screen is made. Believe me when I say it is extremely hard to put this book down. The only negative remark I could make is that Mr. Poulsen is somewhat biased in his depiction of Max Butler. There are times when it feels as if he is trying to excuse or explain away Max's criminal actions as if he weren't the kingpin of an elaborate hacking and fraud ring, but instead just a conflicted brilliant mind. Regardless, if you are even remotely interested in the topic then I would highly recommend getting this book.

Just wow. This book describes how so many of the identity theft rings and credit card exploits have occurred. These are some very talented engineers - as a decent engineer you'll find yourself wondering if you too would yield to the temptation laid in front of you by the poor security the banks and merchants implement in allegedly protecting our identities and credit. You'll discover whether security or the bottom line is valued by these corporations, and walk away disturbed as you shut the book. A must read for consumers and engineers!

I have read many books about computer security. Many of them tried to shed light on the cybercrime, but all of them failed. Most of the time, people seem to be afraid to touch sensitive stuff, because this typically involves revealing identities of cybercrime bosses and their counterparts – FBI operatives. And without mentioning the names a book becomes too generic and boring. This is the best book written in a decade about the subject. It describes the life of the most notorious American hacker named Max Butler. He is the guy responsible for stealing more than 1 billion US dollars from credit cards. If your credit card ever got abused (I know such people who suddenly found 20 pillows charged to their credit card) then blame this guy.The book is written with an intimate knowledge of hacker’s daily routine. It also sheds light on his early days, the time when he was growing up, his relationships with other people, etc. This is only possible because the author – Kevin Poulsen is a former black hat hacker himself. The book makes it very clear that hackers are neither good nor bad. Of course, if your credit card suffers then they are obviously bad from your point of view. More generally, however, hackers are responsible for many security tools that help protect networks from some other bad guys. Hackers give specific warning signs to governments and corporate world: protect your networks or big trouble will happen. This book makes it clear that hackers are not just those evil teenagers. It is more of philosophy and lifestyle, the way of making this world better... Of course, hackers do harm to individual people, but they are rather useful to society in general.

The stickers don't stick!!! There are very few stickers for this price. The stickers are bad quality and there are not a wide variety! I would not purchase again!

Bought for my 2 year old who is a bit young for this type of book, but he is so into sickers that I bought because the price was right.. This is a one time use sticker book with some nice history of Disney animation that I found a bit interesting myself, but my son did not seem to care too much about that. Once the stickers are in place, that's it. It isn't much of a book you can go back and read with your kid. It is just random characters and scenes from Disney movies that explain a bit of history. May be more interesting for older kids (5-6?).

Don't expect these stickers to stick to anything. They peeled up just minutes after placement and refuse to lie flat. Garbage. Don't waste your money. Not to mention that the images on the stickers themselves are sort of ugly. There is a mix of photographs of clay models of disney characters and actual animated images. I regret making this purchase.

My fault for not reading other reviews. This is an 8 page sticker pamphlet. Not worth the price. Better off with some of the other DK PUBLISHING sticker books that actually have a binding.

I love everything about this. It you love Disney characters it’s basically a must have. It’s truly an Ultimate sticker book! While using the great fun of stickers it teaches matching skills and reading with beloved characters.

It's a nice book; but, not very many stickers. It's also more for an older child - more like 4 or 5 years old.

My kids love sticker books and they are big Disney fans. So when I saw this sticker book it was a no-brainer. Just note that this book only has 8 pages so my kids did it fairly quickly. Not sure why they would title it an Ultimate Sticker Book.

This isn't like the other ultimate sticker books I have received from DK Publishing, it is a lot smaller. Probably only 10 pages. But it is perfect for my 2 year old nephew.

This review is for the inexpensive 'ready to read' flexibound version which is a perfectly good binding and book. This is an Eric Carl book with a difference in that it has rhyming lines/text (I don't think any other Eric Carl book has that). The story is sweet because of the rhyming words and it could also teach kids about the protective shell of a tortoise, leading to a potential discussion into what other creatures have naturally protective physical features. This will make a great reading book for 5-6 yrs of age (kindergarten). I personally don't think there is any thing great about the illustrations of this book (many other Eric Carle books have better illustrations than this one), but the other good aspects of the book more than make up for it. I have been reading this to my son from the age of 2 and he still likes it at almost 4. He should be able to read the book by himself in a yr or two.The recommended age range is 2-6 yrs.

The "flexibound" is an extremely cheap binding! I like the story but now I have to order it in a different binding. When I looked up the definition of "flexibound," it described a book with a higher quality than a paperback. However, the copy I received is the worst book binding I've ever owned! Practically it's just papers stapled together. Awful!!!

Great children's bookThe illustrations are full of the Eric Carle bright uniqueness that we've come to expect in his books(this was only illustrated by EC). This helps hold my children's attention until the end.

I loved reading the Eric Carle books to my kids and still have most of them. Now buying the hardcover cardboard books for my new grandson. Received on time and exactly as described.

Fun book for little kids.
