I pretty much loved this book. Taking place during the Bosnian/Serbian conflict, it tells of primarily civilian life in a Sarajevo under siege. The people on whom the book centers lead sad, grim, terrified, and ultimately--at least for these characters--life-affirming lives amid the chaos. To begin with, these lives are limited and pretty tedious, circumscribed by the so difficult-to-achieve needs of daily life and the shells that fall around them and the snipers who shoot from the hills about Sarajevo almost randomly, picking off people trying merely to survive.A catalyst arrives, however, in the form of an old cellist. He has watched from his window as a shell lands amid a crowd of his friends and neighbors lined up simply for bread. Twenty-two people are killed, and the cellist decides that he will stand at the site of the killing for twenty-two days and memorialize these people by playing a specific adagio once each day. He has no idea whether he will survive for this length of time or whether another shell will fall here or a sniper will pick him off, but he decides that acknowledging this portion of lost humanity is more important than his own personal survival. And so he begins.As the other people we are reading about slowly absorb his music, little by little they are reminded, not just of better times, but of better values. Survival alone is not enough for life; something more is required. For example, the family man who spends so much of his time just getting enough fresh water for his family to drink--a very dangerous mission through multiple sniper points--decides that no matter how much more dangerous it will be, he will continue to provide water for his elderly and most unpleasant neighbor as well. The other characters we are following make different but similarly motivated decisions as well. In so doing they endorse, not just life, but human values. And the fact that these decisions are dangerous is brought home to the reader when a favorite character does not survive the decision made.This is a story full of irony and contradiction. Just as the Adagio the cellist plays is a reconstruction of a fragment mostly destroyed in a previous war and possibly not even true to the original, the decisions made are fragmentary returns to different values and most are themselves contradictory. One character chooses to honor life by dignifying the dead. Another chooses death itself rather than the taking of life. The book seems to be saying that a well-lived life is itself dangerous and contradictory.However grim, this is also a beautiful story--one that I highly recommend.

I came upon Steven Galloway’s novel “The Cellist of Sarajevo” while I was doing research on Vedran Smailovic, the true cellist of Sarajevo and after I learned that Smailovic was intensely angry that Galloway had used him as the inspiration for his novel and mis-represented him in many ways. Hence, I must say my perspective was rather biased as I read the novel after living in Sarajevo for 9 months and understanding a bit about Smailovic and the siege. I am rather surprised, therefore, by all the accolades that have been bestowed upon Galloway’s book and by its longevity as reflected in the fact that the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus featured the book at a recent evening lecture, punctuated by a talented young cellist and a professor who talked about the intimate human-like quality of a cello.I did not find the characters in Galloway’s books especially appealing. I know Arrow was based on a real character, actually a Serbian who killed Serbs for the Bosnian side ([...]) and who claimed to have a bad conscience from all her killings although she claimed from her hospital bed to be a “war junkie.” I had difficulty reconciling Galloway’s introspective narrative on Arrow’s internal thoughts and reflections with my own view of Arrow and the siege. I was not sure why the characters, Arrow, Dragan, and Kenan, were so perplexed about the purpose of the cellist’s acts, or why he seemed to be a rather vague symbol in the novel, despite its title. From what I read about the real cellist, he was expressing his response to the siege in the language that naturally emanated from his soul and was also paying homage to the many victims of the war. Rather than perplexing to Bosnians, he inspired them, gave them courage to take a stand for the civilization that they referred and the cosmopolitanism that Sarajevo stood for. I found it far-fetching that the Serbian sniper was so mesmerized by the cellist’s playing that he hesitated and dreamed so that Arrow could easily kill him. For those who have not lived in Sarajevo and not read the real stories of survival, Galloway’s novel is no doubt powerful . It has certainly played a significant role in providing readers the experience of the horror of war, and of the challenge of survival. But the siege was so much more complex than these experiences and its impact so much more far-reaching than any book could give justice to. Nonetheless, Galloway did an outstanding job with a difficult subject and presented three different faces and perspective from which people saw and lived those horrible days of destruction. I am glad I read it despite my misgivings.

I was so overwhelmed by this story that I can't find the right words to write about it. I'm both sorry and relieved that it's over -- sorry because it was enjoyable to read, yet relieved because it's persistent tension was finally over.This is the story of a how the music played by a cellist in the street of a war-torn city provides a few minutes of harmony each day to soothe the constant fear and suffering of the people who live there.The fear and suffering are reflected in three characters who never interact with each other. One is a man whose life revolves around walking to gather bottles of water from the town's brewery for his family. Another man, whose wife and children escaped to Italy, works at a bakery and brings home fresh bread to his sister's family, with whom he is living. The third chapter is a young female sniper who wages a private individual war with the men occupying the hill above their city.Steven Galloway made me feel like I was on those streets alongside those characters as they wondered whether someone on the hill would shoot them as they crossed the street. Their fear and helplessness became my own, and their love of what their city had once been to them reminded me of what I loved about my own home town.I'm still not sure I've found the right words, but there's no doubt about the powerful and profound impact this story has had on me.

Footprint Tunisia is without question the best travel book I've ever used. It's information was accurate to the letter in every case. Background history of the country and it's ancient colonizers was exhaustive compared to the standards of most guide books. Perhaps most impressive is the pertinence of the information to every type of traveller, budget to luxe. The clever and pointed opinions were always on target. The writer did not hesitate to give sly negative reviews where applicable. "Lonely Planet" and "Let's Go" both offer good information but have target readers and leave out the needs of many of us as well as frequently providing only rudimentary information. With Footprint you can throw out all the other guidebooks or just avoid buying them entirely, that's how exhaustive I found the Tunisia entries to be. I've used many guide books, Eyewitness, Access (awesome in the original versions, especially for walking tours and architectural sites,food and shops)and Fodor's but these all pale in comparison to Footprint. It is larger and heavier than earlier Peterson Field Guides and combines the Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Birds (1992) and the Peterson Field Guide to Western Birds (1992) in a single volume. The new features include a more conversational text, online access to video podcasts, and small range maps with the plates as well as the usual range-maps section at the end. The text covers both Canada and the U.S., so it is more inclusive than many guides. I am well aware that I hold in my hands a national treasure, the product of a life well-lived, the "Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America." Its vinyl cover, its glossy pages filled with portraits of birds, not ordinary birds, but perfect birds, simply makes one catch her breath in awe.A celebrated illustrator, writer, ornithologist, and educator, Peterson directly followed Audubon's footsteps in depicting the birds of North America, but with two differences: his book is a field guide in identifying birds and he didn't kill them to paint them. Peterson worked by memory and sometimes the hull of an old dead bird or a photograph or two. His son Lee writes in the Foreword: "He was able to piece together an image of the bird as it should have been. Not just any [bird], but all [birds]" (x).The first thing I learned about birds when I began this new study is that they are the bellwethers of our environment. Peterson also "hoped to shift our relationship to our surroundings from one of exploitation to one of stewardship" (xi).As for content, Peterson goes into much greater detail in teaching how to identify birds than he does in his First Guides, designed for beginners.So, the list for bird identification:Size, shape, wing shape, bill shape, tail shape,Behavior, tree climber?, flight behavior,Wade? Oh, get this: he is similar in species with the loon who produces my favorite bird call.Just how detailed is Peterson's Guide? In paging through the book I stopped at the Wren, described by Peterson as "mostly small, energetic, brown birds; stumpy, with slim, slightly curved bill; tail often cocked" (304). Here are six apparently quite similar birds, but Peterson's field guide arrows show us distinct differences:House Wren: longish tail, white spotted underbodyWinter Wren: very short tail, completely colored and striped underbodyBewick's Wren: white line over his eye and spotted lines underneath; solid white underbodyCarolina Wren: white line over eye but almost solid brown underneath, with faintly striped underbodySedge Wren: Stripes down top of head and eye and backMarsh Wren: Solid brown on top of head with white stripe above eye and the most clear white stripes down his backEven though the life history of each bird shows its range, there is a section in the back half of the book that provides more detail. The book closes with a Life list of all families under each of the 19 orders with blanks next to each one so that the birder and owner of the book can check off all birds spotted.Silhouettes of birds of the water, flight, and roadside conclude this guide; however, a photograph and short biographical sketch of Roger Tory Peterson looks over those silhouettes.

With my Nikon 200-500mm lens, I soon discovered a new interest - bird photography. I had never realized the variety of birds that were in my immediate vicinity. I started wondering what all these birds were. With the Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America, I immediately started to be able to identify the various birds that I was sighting. The book is very thorough and well done. The quality of the illustrations and printing is first rate. This book is definitely a keeper!

Roger Tory Peterson...great ornithologist, great conservationist, great artist. This book was everything I expected, and it's nice to know that the publishers took the trouble to update some of the late Mr. Peterson's information.I live in the Midwest and am a rank amateur as far as bird watching is concerned. Luckily, Chicago is on a flyway, and a lot of migrants funnel down to our lakeshore during fall migration. We also have great variety in habitat. So having a book that gives a thorough treatment of all species I will see in the vicinity is great. It's also detailed enough that, as I get better at identifying birds, some of the more nuanced field marks will come in handy.The book is kind of big--I had to choose between the entire North America guide and the Eastern North America guide. I got the more inclusive book because I want to have something to refer to when I travel West. But because of the weight/size (and frankly, because it is such a beautiful book) I will probably not drag it into the field with me. I have other guides I can use and write notes in, so this will be my at-home go-to reference if there's an unusual (to my eyes) wing bar or color morph.

I moved to Minnesota from NJ and I felt I needed a book that covered the entire US (even if the Eastern volume does cover almost any bird one will see in Minnesota). I purchased this a few days ago, and was not sure what to expect. I have rated this 5 stars because it is much better than expected. The price is very low for the quality of reproduction. My edition of Peterson was a 10 year old reprint of the 4th edition. The maps in that one were not that good at the time and after 30 years in print, they are out of date. The new combined edition has slightly larger pictures. The new maps are much better, including them on the bird pages is a plus. This edition keeps the map section in the back of the book so you can look at ranges of entire groups of birds at a time. This edition was designed, I am sure, to compete with Sibley's book. This book has borrowed some of the best of Sibley without losing the best of Peterson. If Sibley has a weakness it is in the somewhat muted colors of some birds. This works well for experienced birders but beginners will have problems. I feel Peterson's colors are a bit more accurate.Given the great praise for the Sibley book, one needs to remember that Peterson is just as good, just a bit different. This edition is completely updated. Any inexperienced birder would probably do better with the new Peterson. I have both books and use both books and I recommend both books.

I carry this in my car with me so I can use it whenever I'm out and about. I usually supplement with an iphone app such Merlin Bird ID until I get more familiar with local birds and where to find them in the book. It can be overwhelming to a new beginner such as myself to solely rely on a book. I use it as a reference once I've identified the most likely species from my phone app.

Bought this for my bird-watching granddaughter who is 8. She loves it. Especially likes the life list in the back so she can record sightings of birds. She also likes quizzing herself with the bird silhouettes. It's a fabulous book. (Grammy has one too!)

Poe: Stories and Poems by Edgar Allan Poe, adapted by Gareth Hinds into a graphic novel, is a welcome and permanent addition to my personal library. I’ve loved Poe for most of my life, and this volume breathes life and vibrancy into these classics. I cannot recommend this enough, and I’m looking forward to getting more of his graphic adaptations.

If you want to give your student an introduction into English literature without intimidating them, this book does the job nicely. This was part of my daughter's curriculum, and knowing she had to read Edgar Allan Poe caused some eye-rolling. However, she loved reading this book with the lights turned out, and flashlight on! Nicely constructed.

I've been a fan of Gareth Hinds since his first graphic novel. Poe: Stories and Poems, a graphic novel is now my favorite of his (replacing Beowulf). The art meets the text head on, setting the tone and mood immediately. It's everything you want in a graphic novel of Poe's work. The Underling, who is no fan of Poe, couldn't put it down.

I bought this for my English pen pal because he likes graphic novels and I wanted to give him something quintessentially American in a genre he enjoys. He found this gift highly praiseworthy. An excellent cross-cultural expression. He enjoyed it.

I'm a graphic novel reader and a huge Poe fan. I like the way the author/illustrator stayed close to the text. The illustrations are a dark enough color scheme to convey the tone of the text while still being visually brilliant and interesting. I would recommend this book to any Poe fan as well as anyone you want to turn on to Poe's writing.

I ordered this GN to help my students who struggle with reading comprehension understand our Poe stories. It did not disappoint. The illustrations are incredible, and the stories stay true to the original texts. After reading one as a group, students have been asking to borrow it since. Love it!

We would read the original texts and then look at how the images in the graphic version supported the stories and poems. I highly recommend for teachers and Poe enthusiasts.
