I wanted to know if this would be a good chapter book to read to my grandsons, ages 3 & 5. Oh my goodness what an enjoyable read.... it'll make them laugh. The occasional pictures are perfect. Always a fan of James Patterson and he's found a wonderful writer to team up with. The Treasure Hunters series, Max Einstein series... kis will love them.

LOVE READING THESE AND THEN SAVING FOR MY GRANDKIDSGREAT BOOK

Book 3 - Robot Revolution - is not in the same league as the first two books in this series. I see that many other reviewers give the book high marks, but a lot of them comment generically on the series as opposed to this specific book. Unlike the previous books, most chapters simply repeat the same uninteresting theme over and over and over. My six year old eventually gave up on it because nothing was happening. Read the first two books, but pass on this one: you won't miss a thing.

My son liked the book but said the ending was"sappy".

My 9 year old son is obsessed with this series and could not put this book down! He even created an AR test for his class because there wasn't one out yet when he finished.

I bought this for my 9 year old son. It is the 3rd book of the series, he loves them all!

My son absolutely loves these books. They're funny and age appropriate humor.

The house of robots series is enjoyable and educational. My 8 year old grandson loves all of the books.

The Blood of Heroes: The 13-Day Struggle for the Alamo--and the Sacrifice That Forged a Nation

Review

"Donovan's book reads fast, like a gallop through South Texas. You are carried through it. The Alamo is one of the greatest American stories, and he tells it in a sweeping, propulsive narrative that includes fine portraits of all of those wonderful, larger-than-life figures that have embedded themselves in the national lexicon: General Santa Anna, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and William Barret Travis. A first-rate read from a fine historian."―S.C. Gwynne, author of Empire of the Summer Moon"Jim Donovan combines two exceptional talents-those of a first rate story teller and a first rate historian. In The Blood of Heroes, he gives a new and compelling narrative version of one of the most dramatic stories in American History, while at the same time thoughtfully and conscientiously remaining anchored to the wide range of original sources- including many only recently come to light. I predict his book will be one of the best classics to remember the Alamo."―Todd Hansen, The Alamo Reader: A Study in History"An authoritative, moving retelling of an enduring episode of sacrifice and courage ...Donovan's thoroughly researched and agreeably told story focuses on the 13-day standoff, but he also supplies crucial context...Yes, the Alamo is remembered, but not without controversy. What really happened inside those battered walls? Did Travis really draw a line in the sand, asking all who would stand with him to step across it? Without breaking the flow of his compelling story, Donovan reliably separates fact from legend, persuasively assessing the evidence and artfully setting the scene."―Kirkus Reviews"Excellent reporting on the Alamo and the fight for Texas statehood."―Bill O'Reilly, Fox News

My son gave me this book after he finished reading it. I wasn't sure what to think. I lived in Texas for six years, and I love the state and the people who live there. Texas is truly unique. I now live in Colorado, but I still miss Texas. I visited The Alamo several years ago, and was struck with how small it is. Granted, much of it has been torn down, and the area around it is populated by less-than-historic businesses. It seems like an afterthought now, and it is sad to me that it has been relegated to this stature.I never really knew much more about The Alamo and the heroes who died there besides the fact that David Crockett met his fate in that shrine. This book was hard to read in many respects. It's not meant to be a fun read. It's meant to be a detailed account of the people who died fighting insurmountable odds for a cause in which they believed. And those heroes were an inspiration to an entire nation.Reading of the sometimes graphic descriptions of the deaths of these men was not easy. But to know that they stood strong and died strong in their belief is something that I will never forget. For those of you who are looking for some kind of historical novel, this is not it. It doesn't weave novelistic events into history. Instead, it brings to life the people who lived it, not as mere "characters" in a story, but as living, breathing men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country and the freedoms we enjoy. Women? Yes...their sacrifice was in supporting their loved ones and having to deal with the horror of their deaths. This book is meticulously researched, and yet written in a style that is easy to follow. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the true story of The Alamo without the myths.

I thoroughly enjoyed James Donovan's book "The Blood of Heroes." I have read many books over the years on the history of the Alamo, the Texas Revolution and fight for independence from Mexico, and individual biographies of many of the Alamo defenders. Donovan offers a fresh perspective. His book is well documented as Donovan cites many sources from his thorough research and offers insights into the many personalities that were drawn to San Antonio in 1836. This book is more than a rehash about the Battle of the Alamo but an in depth look at the people who had to make the hard choice to stand and fight, knowing that they would most likely perish in the battle. If you are an Alamo "fanatic" or just have a passing interest in Texas history, Donovan's book, "The Blood of Heroes" is a compelling read.

Since I did not want to become a historian or researcher myself to know everything about the Alamo, I searched here to get one book (only one!) which could give me at least the basics about this historical and very influential event back in 1836.And I think this book complied with my objectives, and I feel I have the information and knowledge I needed about the Alamo. I did not know about Walter Lord's book ("A Time to Stand", from 1968), which writer James Donovan himself says is the best on the subject. This will have to wait another day... (if ever). In short, a good, concise, fast pacing book (without relying on cheap narrative devices). I thought it lacks a little bit on a profound and more objective view into the Mexican reasons for the fight, but whatever...

First I want to say I received this book a week before the scheduled day . The book was in excellent condition when I received it . Now to the book. This book is the best told story about the Alamo!!! The author James Donovan took the main characters and decribed how each one ended up at the Alamo. I was reading this book when we visited San Antonio and visited the Alamo. I could not put this book down !!! If you are like me and watched Davy Crockett on television you will really enjoy this book . This book is loaded with history!! Please buy this book if you are interested in the Alamo!! I would give it ten stars if I could !!!

James Donovan is to be congratulated for THE BLOOD OF HEROES, a particularly well-written and thoroughly researched new study of the Texas War for Independence, which I think makes an excellent introduction to the subject. It is no easy task for an author to charge himself with the goal of saying something fresh about the Alamo and its related incidents and interested parties, but here Donovan acquits himself honorably. He has found some previously overlooked sources for his readers to consider, and he is reasonably fair and balanced in his recognition of the various points of view pertaining to the War and its causes and significance. A few minor complaints keep me from awarding the book five stars: a surprising lack of maps and other illustrations is one, and a couple of slight factual errors (at one point, Donovan seems to claim that Andrew Jackson lived in the Tennessee town that bears his name, which of course is not true)is another. Overall, though, I am confident that Donovan's work is worthy of addition to that groaning bookcase stuffed with the works of such geniuses as Lord, Tinkle, Davis, Nofti, and others who have paved the way. A final observation: the negative reviews of this book--at least the ones I bothered to read--are among the least useful and most unfair critiques of an author's work that I have ever come across on Amazon. A couple of naysayers claim the book is difficult to read or is somehow boring, like most history textbooks tend to be. I honestly cannot fathom how anybody can take issue with Donovan's writing style--he nicely combines the novelist's prose with the historian's research. Somebody else gives Donovan the raspberries because he denies the story of Col. Travis drawing a line in the sand--apparently this "critic" skipped the last line of the Afterword, where Donovan asserts that the story of the line is "acceptable, factual history" (p. 374). Somebody else dismisses the book because the artwork on the cover is "historically inaccurate"--conveniently forgetting that authors rarely have final approval over cover art, and ignoring the fact that the cover image does not actually portray the familiar hump that tops the Alamo today. These erroneous or unsupported attacks on Donovan are usually found in reviews that contain numerous spelling and grammatical problems, which reminds us that bad proofreading frequently reflects bad (or at least lazy) thinking. At the end of the day, THE BLOOD OF HEROES is a very solid piece of work and deserves the attention and respect of anybody with an interest in the Alamo or history in general.

This review may express unpopular views. I write my reviews for myself, so I can remember what I read – and it doesn’t make any sense to lie to myself. The Thirds series started off strong for me, but the last 3 books took a bit of a downturn. I was going to give Darkest Hour Before Dawn 3 stars – but it would have been out of some weird sense of series loyalty. DHBD was…. Meh. It was a chore to get through. I was happy when it ended. In short…. I did not enjoy it.This installment focused on the Seb Hobbes and Dr. Hudson Colbourn pairing and I went into the story with a sense of trepidation as neither caught my interest as secondary characters in previous installments. And as anticipated their characters and romance were lukewarm. I just did not connect with the characters at all. Their romance seemed more stereotypical M/F as opposed to M/M in terms of their characterization with Hudson being the more effeminate character and Hobbes being the gentle giant perfect gentleman. This may not be fair but a personal pet peeve of mine is anyone calling their significant other “Darling” with a straight face. The fact that Hudson is British unfortunately doesn’t cut him any slack. It also didn’t help that I didn’t particularly like Hudson…. I thought….there’s no way around it….I thought he was an idiot; and I have a low tolerance for idiots.Which brings us to the main relationship conflict. I get that trauma is stressful for couples and can push people apart. But the whole premise behind the Seb and Hudson separation is…. ridiculous (and perpetuated by Hudson which increased my frustration with him). On some level it felt contrived, but if you take it at face value – then I must conclude that Hudson is an idiot. A lot of DHBD felt contrived. Seb and Hudson reconnecting and then Bam! – in the middle of the grocery store – the psychotic Mrs. Palmer. Sorry for your loss and all, but seriously? Blaming Hudson and Seb makes absolutely no sense based on the facts presented. None. And then the series of events pulling Seb and Hudson into TIN. What was Seb thinking? Who would do that knowing the consequences; or if you are going to do that – then you don’t leave any evidence (aka body). So now it’s either contrived or Seb is acting like an idiot too.The sad reality is that I read DHBD is a state of either perpetual annoyance or boredom. The only highlight was the cool Wolf reveal.

I have waited for Seb and Hudson's book forever! The readers of Charlie Cochet's THIRDS series have known the former Delta leader (Seb) and the medical examiner's (Hudson) story since book one. We knew something terrible happened, and they broke up because of it. But, we didn't know the extent of their back story, and what the breakup did to each man. We find out how each has coped without the other half of their soul, and the toll each man suffered living without their mate. I was delighted to see Dex and Sloane, Ash and Cael, Calvin and Hobbs, their sergeant, Tony, and the big boss Sparks. Austin also makes a brief appearance, coming out of nowhere, then silently disappearing, as always. I laughed with the banter of Dex and his team. I cried reliving the heartbreak of the child's death. My heart was warmed watching the love shared between Hudson and Seb trying to rekindle. We also see the strength of Seb, Hobbs, and Rafe's parents. Their bond is unbreakable, and we see the example of commitment to each other their children grew up with. No wonder the children all grew up to be tenacious lovers. Their parents laid the ground work, and provided the example to which all their relationships could be held against. In short, this book lived up to every one of my expectations, and then took me on such a wild left turn, I was shocked and stunned at the latest development happening at the end of the book. My favorite part in the book was seeing Hudson's wolf play with Seb's tiger. In their Therian forms, they are able to be free, and express the affection between mates they are unable to in their human forms. If you love the THIRDS series, and are ready for the next step in the evolution of the story, this book is a must read. New characters are introduced, and old ones are revisited. Charlie Cochet is a master world builder, and you will be happy to revisit the entire team of Destructive Delta Force.

As I was reading this, I kept thinking to myself, "Maybe it's time for this series to end."This book focuses on Seb and Hudson. I really didn't like Hudson in this book, maybe that's why I got tired of reading this. Yes, Hudson keeps pulling away, and drawing close, and pulling away, etc. He has an epiphany, bring on the happy ending. We are left with a cliffhanger/reveal which if you've been paying attention at all in the series is really easy to figure out--especially in this book. So....the reveal packed no punch for me.I really LOVED the first few books in the series, but then I had a hard time when the focus veered off of Dex and Sloane. Sue me, they're my favorite couple in the series. Maybe there are too many conspiracies or plot lines, but I just kinda stopped caring and was only reading the book to finish it. That makes me kinda sad, you know?Still, this one had a plot as opposed to the last book. I'm not sure how many more books Cochet has planned in this series, but if it's more than one, I'm not sure I'll finish it out if it's similar to this one.

This reminded me of Twilight without the vampires. Sad, unwanted, loner main female lead character. Super cute, unbelievably supportive, loving male lead character. The writing was redundant. Character experiences the same thing over and over and over without ever allowing anyone to help or snapping. I just wanted it to end. Read the preview for book two thinking now it'll move forward and evolve. Nope. I'm out.

I read this book years ago but stumbled upon it in my library and had to come write a review!Reading the blurb immediately brought back all the feels! I have re-read this series maybe twice since reading it initially which alone shows just how good it is. This book is an emotionally tough book as it revolves around mental and physical abuse. Emma Thomas has a dark secret that she desperately tries to keep hidden from everyone around her, so that the perfect facade around her adoptive family isn’t broken. Her only goal is to maintain her perfect GPA and extracurriculars so that she may get a full scholarship to college so that she can escape her personal hell and never look back. That is until a new boy at school Evan Matthews notices her, and refuses to let her go back to being invisible. He literally demolishes her walls and she finds herself unwillingly falling for him while simultaneously trying to shield him from the terrors of her life which is near impossible to do. This books is amazing and hands down one of the best that I have ever read. It will make you cry a lot but the journey you will take with Emma will be all worth it I promise you! It’s so great to see all the amount of positive feedback that this series has gotten in the last few years, when I first read Reason to Breathe it didn’t have that many reviews. But believe me when I say it deserves every positive thing that people from around the world have said about it.For more fun book reviews checkout my blog at obsessivecompulsivereads.com :)

Wow where do I begin? First this is the first book buy this author that I’ve read, and of course won’t be the last. I do have to finish this series lol.So I finished this book at one in the morning with tears that wouldn’t stop. I don’t even know where to start. This gets right to it from the very first page. I don’t know what to say without giving anything away, except that,1. I HATE, H.A.T.E Emma’s aunt, she is the cruelest person ever2. Emma’s uncle is just as bad and messed up to, first of all he lets what happens, happen.3. Sara, Emma’s best friend, and I mean she’s the best. To me there would be know surviving ever if Emma didn’t have her.4. Evan, he’s also the best. He’s the greatest person to ever come along next to Sara. And of course there’s5. Emma, you just cry for her and feel so horrible for all the stuff she goes through and the abuse from her aunt. I don’t even know how she survived as long as she has till now.“You have a night game on Friday, right?” he confirmed as we climbed the stairs. “Yes.” “What are you doing after school, before the game?” “Probably staying at school and doing homework or whatever.” “Do you want to get something to eat?” he asked, hesitating on the landing before opening the double doors leading to the hall. I stopped, and so did my heart. “And yes, this would be a date, so that we’re clear,” he stated with a smirk. I stopped breathing too. “Okay.” I exhaled, still unable to move. I really just agreed to go on a date?!After Mr. Hodges began his lecture on the bones in the hand, I scribbled on a blank piece of paper, Are you already assuming there’s an us? Evan wrote in response, NOT YET. I still didn’t understand what that meant and drew my eyebrows together, so he wrote, I’M GETTING READY FOR WHEN THERE IS.Emma’s aunt is the worst person ever and cruelest and most abusive person towards her. Her dad past away sadly when she was young, and then her mom sadly became unable to care for her and wasn’t exactly the best, so her dads brother and wife became her guardians. To some people you would think that’s a good thing, but for Emma it’s not.Thankfully Emma, had Sara the greatest best friend anyone could ever ask for. Sara could be quite funny at times but really cared truly about Emma. The love they had like sisters was the best. I truly believe if Emma didn’t have her as a friend things would of been a lot worse. I don’t know how many times I was shaking and saying no don’t do it, so afraid that something so bad was going to happen. Or that her aunt was going to find out and it was going to be BAD, really bad. I also keep thinking a saying why doesn’t Sara, or Evan just freakin say something. I was ready to pull my hair out or have a heart attack, if Emma wouldn’t say anything then they should just say something. Again more tears and tears.Sara’s shoulders sank as she slowly lifted her head, revealing the tears streaming down her cheeks. “Emma, you have to tell someone.” Her words sounded desperate and urgent. “If you don’t, then I will.” “No, you won’t,” I snapped, my icy tone that made Sara wince. “What do you mean?” she demanded, even more passionately. “Did you see your back? The blood was seeping through your shirt during the game. Emma, I’m afraid some morning when I pull up to get you, you won’t come out. I care about you, and I can’t watch her do this to you.”Well I felt so much better, when I would be worrying and then nothing would happen, until you get to the last page. Man I’m telling you, that’s just wrong. I mean wrong, ending the way it did. I couldn’t stop the tears and didn’t know what to say.I’m just glad I came across this series that has already been out for a while. I don’t know how I would feel if I had to wait for the next book. I think I would of been such a mess.“Well, let’s get you back to hell before the devil realizes you’re not home.”So like I said it gets right to it from the very beginning, it’s a really good, and written very well, but for some people it might not be easy to read. There is a lot of abuse that you read and go through with Emma, that it can be hard to read.I don’t know what else to say. I can’t say much without giving stuff away, except that I know I’m not waiting another minute to read the 2nd book. If I wait any longer, I think I’ll really lose it, or go crazy. In the balance of love and loss, it was love that made me struggle to… Breathe.

It's the setting of the book. It's because she's only 16, part of the why she's so helpless. We all know she's been abused. But the extent of it was so much I cringed. I'm sure there must be some reasons to explain Carol's behaviors. And the reason Emma stayed and didn't say anything was understandable. But her actions.. I got hooked from the beginning because she was so fierce and strong.. though later on I had to shake my head at her decisions and her actions. It's this feeling that you wish you could reach your arms into the book and shake her or protect her that gives this book a 5 stars. And omg... Evan Matthews... <3

We ordered the Alice in Wonderland with the green leather cover. I thought it was difficult to tell which reviews went with which versions. I'm really glad we grabbed this version, the cover (despite the ugly green color) is quite beautiful with embossed lettering and shiny red roses and border. The edge of the pages are golden, there is a red ribbon for marking your page. All of the original artwork is presented, and the page layouts are perfect. The front and back cover have a vivid full color painting of the tea party. If you are looking for a high quality version of the book, I couldn't recommend this one more. The size is medium. It is half way between the size of a paperback and a hard cover text book.

This review is for the RED "hardcover" and I will post pictures because when I read reviews prior to purchase I was super confused and had no idea which book the reviews were about.First, the cover is gorgeous but it's not "hardcover" (see photo). It's a lovely soft cover, covered with leather which is partially embossed; the gold lettering appears to be painted on. The back cover is just as well made and embossed as well.Second, this is the full version of both stories, not an "abridged" version. The generous illustrations are beautifully done.I can't believe this book is only $10!I hope my review helps!

I had a difficult time determing which version was being reviewed in many of these reviews, so I am specifically reviewing the version that is illustrated by Anna Bond. This is a great version to use with younger kids- it has larger print and illustrations on almost every page. If you want to purchase accompanying audio to listen with, just buy the unabridged version and it should be a match.

I loathe when Amazon lumps the reviews of different books together so this is for the hardcover version illustrated by Charles Santore. The cover is beautiful with an older looking cover and the color illustration of Alice falling. The sketches throughout the book are in black and white. The pages are thick and sturdy but cut roughly on the sides. The font is a great size and spacing and on a very white background. I hate when they use a small print and tight spacing on older books. The sketches are beautifully done and do a wonderful job of bringing Alice and the story to life. They do pale in comparison to the illustrated versions but unfortunately that edition is abridged. I had never read the story before so I was not aware of the differences between Alice’s Adventures Underground and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but there are many. This book for example does not have the chapter on the Mad Tea Party. That and other parts would be added in to the story so if that’s the version you are interested in than this is not the version for you.

This is incredible! Absolutely beautiful.. Extended my expectations!! I have seriously never seen a more beautiful book! The detail is awesome and even the story itself is from the original Lewis Carroll version. Not only is each page a beautiful pop up.. But each page has mini fold out pages with more pop up artwork. This will be a keepsake for our family. SO glad I bought this and will look at buying others!

I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

This review is specifically for the penguin hardcover cloth-bound classics edition (white with pink flamingos)!Naturally, the tale of Alice in Wonderland (told in two books; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) is definitely a fun, unique tale that appeals to children and adults alike, so of course I wanted to own a quality copy of it! I like how this edition contains both books and is hardcover with a simple cover design that looks timeless and elegant on my bookshelf. The book is full of useful notes and information in edition to having the tale; plus it contains the classic illustrations too! The paper is very high quality, the printing very attractive, and overall it was well worth the $10 I spent on it. I thought it was such an attractive edition that I bought one for my sister, who is a collector of the various editions of this tale. I've no complaints except that I don't really care for how rough the fabric is; it's not very nice to hold in your bare hands in my opinion, and it makes a sound when it's placed on the shelf next to other cloth-bound hardcovers from the penguin classics series, so those are two things to keep in mind. I personally would have preferred either a softer fabric or for the books to have been bound in hard-backed pleather.

#15,257 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The plot was good and the story entertaining, but the constant repetition of Da and Ya along with repeating "the two astronauts and one cosmonaut" was terribly distracting.Perhaps even worse was getting basic facts wrong that a school kid could look up. Pangea broke up long before the time in question and the dinosaur extinction occurred 66 million years ago so they could not have landed between 75 and 55 million years ago as the dinosaurs would have been long gone post 66 million years. No excuse for getting these basic facts wrong. Look them up!

"When The Crew of The International Space Station Is Forced To Abandon To The Planet Below,They are Mysteriously,"Throwback" Into a Time Where Savage Prehistoric Dinosaurs and Creatures Roam and Terrible Horrors Await. Everyday is a Battle Against Flesh Eating Dinosaurs,Starvation,Disease, and Madness."Will Anyone Survive This Brutal Planet, and One Day Find There Way Back Home. "A Mustread."

A well written book about dinosaurs, when it's getting hard to come up with something new. But you did the job just fine. Very glad I read this book. Can't wait to read more of your books. Tim.

The book overall was good, drug a little in places. But the ending really sucked, what happens to them? What about the aliens?

I could not stop reading. To the spacefarers, it seemed they had been thrown back in time when dinosaurs roamed by the mysterious space cloud. Yet, a bright beam they had seen radiating from Earth while in space gave them hope of returning to their own time. But, where they crash landed was miles and miles from the beam's origin and they have to trek through dangerous territory and predators to get there. The ending was not what I expected and I hope the author is working on a sequel. All in all, this was an exciting read!

I got to read two chapters free while finishing a different authors book. I was entranced with the idea that was presented in those two chapters: the International Space Station travels through an anomaly in space to take readings and EVERYTHING changes! The earth they know is no longer there! While they are circling the changed earth, think VERY early earth, before the continents have split apart, they see a beacon from the ISS on the land mass. Well, we all know they HAVE to go and check it out - after all, Earth as they know it is no longer there so this may be a way to escape! After many chapter of dangers, adapting to their environment (somewhat far-fetched) they arrive...not to add a spoiler to this review - the ending SUCKS!!!! "The End" ?????????? That's it????? I won't read this author again.

Was okay but the main character's inner dialog seemed to get kind of monotonous and pity-partying by the end. The ending was abrupt with no resolution of any kind and no indication if the author intends a continuation in a sequal. If this isn't part of a series then the meaning behind the abrupt ending is just lost on me. If the author intends to continue with the story, then it's a decent beginning. It is well edited which is a refreshing change from many ebook offerings ,these days.

There was plenty of Dino action in this book and the beginning really had me excited. The was a fair amount of character development. There has to be a second book because the ending was just inconclusive. Bummer.
