(Kindle version) Lao-Tsu has been a regular companion of mine for 40 + years.It's always interesting to find new translations, although this far for me nothing has beaten the Swedish translation by Henriksson&Hwang ( only in Swedish, though).I think I've read most of the English translations, my favourite is the Lau translation published by Penguin.This translation by Stenudd is very much in quality and sharpness in par with my Swedish favourite.I rate this translation as absolutely brilliant, and definitely a must if you are a fan.The book is both chapters and commentaries.Commentaries can be very useful for someone who is not so familiar with the text, or wants a reflection on the chapters.For me as a frequent reader, I prefer to skip them(I know best anyway, don't I...;-)?)The text in this translation is so pregnant and sharp, that I just don't want to read about it, the joy of the text stands for itself.

His commentary is thorough but I disagree with some of his interpretations. I prefer Stephen Mitchell ' translation by far. I've heard Thomas Cleary ' translation is the best.

The author's explantions are very well written of Lao Tzu stories.

Good explanation of Tao.

The 2071st translation is remarkably different!. The 2074th translation stands out as time well spent! The literary rendition of what was previously pure smut is great.

Great book if you want to compare the original Chinese scriptures with the English translations.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will start by stating that I'm a middle-aged man who never reads young adult fiction. I made an exception in this case, however, because what I do read a lot of is Jack London. So when I heard about this series so audaciously titled The Secret Journeys of Jack London, I immediately wanted to check it out to see if these books were worthy of bearing the name of their illustrious subject. Once I started reading Book One: The Wild, I was pleasantly surprised by how well written and entertaining this book is. Authors Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon have crafted a clever coming-of-age tale with all the characteristics of a classic London adventure.The beginning of the story is loosely based on the actual events of London's life. Spurred on by the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s, teenage Jack and his brother-in-law Shepard venture up to the Yukon Territory hoping to strike it rich. The two make it as far as Dyea, but when the ailing Shepard lays eyes on the grueling Chilkoot pass, he decides to head back to San Francisco, leaving young Jack on his own. Jack, far from disappointed at this unexpected parting of the ways, relishes his newfound independence. He soon hooks up with two companions, and together the three embark on the arduous journey up river to Dawson. From that point the plot departs from the semi-biographical narrative, and the authors take the story in a completely different and unexpected direction.Though London was a strident Darwinist, atheist, and rationalist, he was not averse to introducing supernatural elements into his work as long as it resulted in a good story. The most obvious examples of this are his novel The Star Rover and the novella "Planchette". In this book, however, Golden and Lebbon step way beyond London's paranormal comfort zone and take it to a whole new level. Almost every chapter, much like the lion's share of young adult literature today, is loaded with supernatural occurrences and superhuman feats. The genre of wilderness adventure has all but disappeared from bookstore shelves in the past few decades, while vampires, werewolves, and zombies have multiplied like rabbits. If introducing a few monsters and spirits into the wilderness is what it takes to breathe new life into this underappreciated genre, then more power to the authors for trying. Golden and Lebbon have done their research well. Not only are they well versed in London's life and work, they also make creative use of the Native American myth of the Wendigo and the Russian folktale of the forest spirit known as the Leshii. They have created a very original story that definitely departs from London's familiar territory, yet they still manage to vividly and contagiously convey his spirit of adventure and his love for the wild."Young adult" is a good label for this book, as it contains quite a bit of violence and gore, and a hint of sex. It's probably too mature for a junior high audience. Hopefully this book will succeed in turning some young readers on to London's classic works like The Call of the Wild and The Iron Heel. I wish the authors the best of luck with this series. This book, by the way, would make an excellent movie. It's about time Jack London became a household name again.

This forbidden text, the never-before-seen journal of a seventeen year old Jack London, gives Golden and Lebbon the means to play around with reality and history, and it never loses you or gets dull.When I was first reading London at young age, I could only imagine what kind of man you would have to be to withstand the rigors of the Yukon in search of gold. Now that I am older, I find myself thinking only a seventeen year old could have that youthful confidence and sense of adventure to take that journey.The blend of the adventure a genre with a little of the supernatural horror, in the form of facing off against the legendary Wendigo, is a joy to behold, and I have read few writers who can pace an adventure the way Christopher Golden can. I cannot bring bring myself to spoil this for you, but Jack London is eventually accompanied by wolf spirit guide, and it is so...perfect.The book is aimed at younger readers, and rightly so, younger readers need to know about Jack London. A seventeen year old Jack London is clearly more accessible to a younger crowd (not that he lived to be an old man) so if this gives London a whole new audience, all the better.If you enjoy an old school adventure that tugs at something deep inside you, do yourself a favor and give it a read.

The questions and explanations were great. I found this book very helpful in preparing for the exam - great results. My friend gave me great advice when she recommended it as THE study tool. Very satisfied with the book. Use it to pass the exam.

I just took my CLEP Biology exam yesterday and walked away with the score of 62 and did not even finish a quarter of this book.Please don't trust those reviews saying this book is great, useful, blah blah blah, those reviews are fraudulent.This book contain too many advanced concepts that are not even covered in CLEP.Unless you are weak on the three following chapters, do NOT buy this book:1.6 Photosynthesis2.1 Energy Flow, Nutrient Cycles, Ecosystems, Biomes4.1 Plants: Structure, Function, ReproductionOnly questions in these three chapters in the book are corresponded to CLEP exam level.Even you are trying to master the CLEP exam, this book won't help much, since there are too many advanced level knowledge to cover in a CLEP exam.

Questions were a great source of practice. My teacher recommended this book as some of his former students had used the book with great results in the past. I am very happy with my test results and thank this book for being ready for the exam. I practiced some questions within their topic and then mix questions closer to test day to be ready for the actual test. The explanations let me learn a lot of biology to build on, what i thought, was my strong foundation. Practice went well and test results were great. Thanks!

When they say "High Yield" they mean it. I have a Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, so I have had college level Biology, Chemistry, and Botany in classes designed for science majors. I bought this book for my daughter to prepare for the Biology CLEP test, but it appears that the questions are much more detailed than the types of questions that are common on the CLEP. I couldn't answer half of them and my daughter would find them unintelligible. I need a book of common type questions, not the 10% of the questions that sort out the adequately knowledgeable from the geniuses. If you need to ace the test for some reason and you are amazingly well prepared, this might be the book for you, but if you are a non-science major--try another option. By the way, the SAT Biology book by this company is the same book as this. It certainly doesn't cover high school biology.

Great book. Gave me the practice I needed to do very well on the exam. I liked the problems and solutions. Detailed solutions let me know ways to save time solving problems and arrive at the right answers. Less time and better results. Chapters let me focus on practicing concepts needed for CLEP. Explanations made this book.

This is an excellent work on the sextant, but marred by the terrible printing job used by the publishers. They apparently photocopied it! So, all illustrations and photos are dark, low resolution, nasty. Even the printed text is very low contrast and annoying to read. Cmdr. Bauer deserved better.

This is a well-written book, full of good interesting history. However, I bought it because I wanted to learn how to USE a sextant. Thus it did not fulfil my purposes.Forrest Asmus

I have GPS that I call "Gabby" but until you find your place on Earth with A Sextant, you haven't had the fun you want with a simple technical item like my Davis Mark 25 Master Sextant for about 100 bucks. This Handbook takes you to the front of the class. I've gone a couple of hundred miles from home and plotted within 70 yards from my actual location on Earth. l enjoyed the results from this particular Handbook. It doesn't go over my head with confusing information; Just to the point of what you need.

I bought a WW II vintage U.S. Navy Mark II Sextant made by David White Company on eBay. I got The Sextant Handbook from Amazon to learn how to maintain, adjust and use the sextant. I learned a lot from the book that applied to my sextant. I have made a number of repairs outside the scope of the book as well cleaning and lubricating as described in the book. I have done all of the checks and adjustments suggested in the book. It is now functioning quite well, thanks to Bruce Bauer's suggestions. I'm still learning and I'm having lots of fun. I'd have been lost without The Sextant Handbook. However, I do have questions about the sextant that aren't answered in the bool.

Very informative although the pictures are darker and sometimes difficult to discern the item involved. I just wish the explanation was a little easier and simpler so more folks could use it.

Learned a bunch. I now feel very competent to handle clean and adjust my sextant. The detail about how to adjust and clean the sextant is well worth the money alone. There is also some great information about the development of the instrument that really makes clear how it works, better than most books on navigation. I went from being a little scared to use it to feeling confortable to disassembly and clean it.

Item exactly as described, arrived on time, would buy it again.

This is not the easiest topic to cover... but the coverage is easy to understand, and it is very thorough. Even if you never anticipate having to use a sextant.. it's interesting to know how.
