The good thing about this book is that it's small and practical. However, it is filled with many errors - as the professor pointed out - so this makes its reading more difficult and not as trustworthy. Otherwise, it is fine.

This is an absolutely A+ book for any lighting technician who's interested in the principles behind what we're doing, or who hopes to do any technical troubleshooting at all. Cadena picks up where Harry Box leaves off--this book has very minimal (one chapter) practical set skills, but goes into great detail explaining the WHY. It also has a couple pages of example problems at the end of each chapter, with the solutions at the back, just like high school. If you're a neck-down kinda guy, you don't need and won't enjoy this book. If you geek out on understanding WHY we figure-eight feeder (aka, why coiled feeder sucks more juice without doing any more work/lighting) or HOW power factor comes to exist, rather than just understanding you need to overbuild the distro, this book is for you. I don't expect to ever sit down with a calculator and run trig to understand the degree of phase shift from a ballast while on set, but I do think wrapping my head around this stuff has made me a much better technician, and will help me problem solve the ever-increasing complexity that is entertainment power.

Many, many years ago I was an aspiring sound engineer with one big problem: the lighting gear. Back then a dimmer pack would wreak havoc with the PA system, creating unwanted buzzes and noise. Thanks to a high school electronics class, I learned enough about AC "mains" power distribution to start building my own power systems that isolated the audio from the lighting, and (mostly) curing the buzz problem. Much of that good knowledge was wiped away by a formal education in electrical engineering, and I let the licensed electricians handle the power stuff from thereafter. Now I'm retired and doing audio, video and even lighting for fun. And since the rental companies will turn over a generator and high current cables over to anyone with cash, I figured it was time to have a book that just might avert disaster as us old guys play with high voltages.This book is a must-have reference for people who are involved in community theater, houses of worship, low budget films and other situations where safe and solid electrical power is needed, but where a qualified electrician might not be in the budget. Before reading this book, I had never noticed the company switch in the local theater, and now I know how to use one safely. For those of us who only have dim memories of AC theory, it's a one-stop shop for all those answers that we used to know by heart. It would make a fine textbook for an adult continuing education class.

As a studio lighting guy turned Technical Director I quickly found out there was a lot I didn't really know about electricity. Once you leave behind engineered drops of 20-60A stagepins, the world gets complicated quite a bit. And, for liabilitiy's sake, most electricians won't go into too great of detail. But - you NEED to know this stuff if you're planning full shows from the ground up. Enter this book - well written, straight up tells you when to involve someone with more knowledge, and easy to comprehend. A great addition to any show professional's library!

I have been on the job for 16 years now and like most electricians in the entertainment industry I learned by following practices. I know some of the theory and I know a lot of what works and doesn't work but I frequently didn't know WHY things did or didn't work. This book has really opened my eyes and I genuinely think I am a better electrician for it.

It includes the history of the industry, and many interesting facts to keep you interested and understand why certain practices are now standard. Great man, Great book. This is a very good book that covers the entire topic from basic electricity through power distribution systems and the types of dimmer systems in current use in theaters. It gives interested people the tools that they need to install, manage and use these systems within their design limits.

Theresa Romain's stories often include characters who are not nobility and I find that to be a refreshing change. Lady Notorious centers on Cass Benton, a de facto Bow Street Runner. Readers met Cass & several other characters here, in Lady Rogue. Cass is not officially a runner, because she's a woman, but she and her twin brother work cases together, with Cass often doing the bulk of the work. She is hired by George, Lord Northbrook, to investigate a possible plot to kill his father, the Duke of Ardmore. This plot involves several other nobles, and allows for some repeat appearances of other Lady Rogue characters. In helping George, Cass poses as a member of the nobility, but this isn't a Pygmalion trope, and there is little in the narrative to support the portrayal of Cass as Lady Notorious. I still enjoyed Cass; she is a bundle of smarts and I loved her vitality. She is doing all the work, "finding a way" while still struggling against the constraints on women. She knows this and it bothers her. George, Lord Northbrook, is not the usual dilettante noble or a rake. He's charming and basically kind, as well as interested in learning about the Duchy he's to inherit. He wants to help his troubled parents but doesn't know how to yet. And he's passionate about his camera obscura. There is chemistry between the two and the heat level is just right. The scheme and plot against members of the nobility, really feels like just a set up tool and is frankly not really dealt with much. When the scheme is included, the pacing slows and the story suffers a bit. The connection between Cass and George is really the warmth and heart of the story. They don't simple solve a murder plot, George and Cass help each other see that perhaps making your way in the world, is about what you yourself do and not just the rules others put in place for you. And it helps to have someone by your side along the way. A good addition to the Royal Rewards series, with the mystery playing a smaller role than in the other books. Fans of Theresa Romain should enjoy this one. Readers new to Romain, should start with the first in the series, to get a better feel for Romain's style.

If you like 100% historical accuracy in your Regency romances, this definitely isn’t the book for you. With a female Bow Street Runner (in all but the salary) and the son of a Duke as romantic protagonists, there are aspects of the story that definitely fail the plausibility test.That said, it was absolutely brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, yes, I know, I’m normally a nitpicky cow about historical inaccuracies, but there’s a difference between implausible and impossible. It’s implausible that a woman was working for the Bow Street Runners as an unofficial investigator in 1818, whereas it’s impossible (I’m looking at you, Marie Force) to have a horse-drawn carriage travel from Essex to Scotland with a single overnight stop. Just imagine this as a parallel-universe Regency England where women could hold down jobs and were treated with respect, and you’ll thoroughly enjoy it.Cassandra works for Bow Street unofficially as her twin brother Charlie’s (the actual Runner) assistant, but the reality is she’s the mastermind of the pair. When Charlie breaks his leg on a case while climbing a trellis into a lady’s bedchamber because he fancies himself a Romeo, Cassandra takes the case on alone, and is thrust into company with George, Marquis of Northbrook, who believes someone may be out to kill his father.George is an absolute delight. Yes, he’s the spoiled and pampered son of a duke, but he’s also a smart sort who can see clearly the devastation his father’s love of gambling and his mother’s addiction to laudanum has wrought. He’s fun and likable and nobody really takes him seriously, but Cassandra not only sees through his facade, she makes him want to be more than an heir in waiting. His willingness to try new things, his near-insatiable curiosity about everything and his acceptance of Cassandra for exactly who she was made him honestly one of my favourite romance heroes in ages.Suspend your disbelief at the door and just enjoy this charming, witty and clever Regency romance with an enlightened hero and an emancipated heroine. I was delighted, and I definitely want to read more by this author, who I hadn’t encountered before. And on that note, this isn’t the first in the series, but I didn’t find it a problem at all to follow along with the plot and the other characters. Cassandra (Cass) Benton is hiding in the shadows of Deverall Place at 1:00 am. Hired as a housemaid, her real job is to shadow Lord Deverell until he goes to bed at night. Her twin brother, Charles, works as a footman in the same household. Both of them work for Bow Street but have been hired by George, Lord Northbrook, son and heir to the Duke of Ardmore.Around 40 years ago, the younger sons of 10 aristocrats placed a secret wager called a tontine and now after careful investing, is worth 100,000 pounds. The one survivor of the group receives all the money. Some have now died of natural causes, however in recent years, some of the investors have died under mysterious circumstances, thus necessitating Lord Northbrook’s investigation. His godfather, Lord Deverell, is one of the survivors and he worries that if someone is killing them off, he wants to protect his godfather. But when someone manages to sneak into the house and stabs the man but not killing him, George feels he needs to step up the protection. Thus, he hatches a scheme to have Cass move into the house pretending to be his cousin and assume the name of Mrs. Bendetti and mix with the ton hoping to ferret out the killer. The ton seems to accept this clever woman - a red head with an Italian name. Huh?By that time, I had a headache trying to piece all of this together while asking myself why authors must write Regency novels with heroines as spies. Please. This trope has been done to death. I really like the author and have read many of her novels but I do not think I can digest another Regency spy novel. Please get back to writing a “real” Regency romance.I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

This book deserves five stars, but I just can't give it due to some very sloppy mistakes in the diagrams. His schematic diagram on pg 135 is correct, but his diagrams for the very next two projects are completely screwed up. His diagram on page 147 isn't even remotely close to the 16F876A package - it's a 24 pin device not the 28 of the 16F876A. So you have to be careful and use a printout to guide your circuits. That said, this book takes you a little further down your development path. His programs have worked for me and I have gained a few new insights and programming shortcuts. Would I buy it again(?) yes, yes, yes. Basic (or in this case BASIC) mastery of the 16F876A seems to be an important step in anyone's development who programs with PBC or PBP. I highly recommend this book, but be warned about the schematic fopas!

Great book, nicely organized and they final put the cd in the middle of the book. I don't know how many cd were broken over the years with them on the rear page. A truly 5 star book.

When I started with PIC, Arduino was not available. I was attracted to using basic for the programming and wanted the improved efficiency over other the other hobbyist platform available at that time. The book is a great learning guide and I would recommend it as a PIC starting point.

Hard to imagine being very productive with this techonology without this guide. Good textbook type technical explanations and good meaningful examples.

I went through the projects in the book and also use it as reference for my own projects. A great way to learn about the PIC chip.

I have to say that if you are starting out with the pics then this is an excellent book, but the diagrams in it are at a few places slightly off if not for that it is perfect.

Taking a class on mechatronics and the core of this class is programing PICs, good price [compared to campus book store] and an easy to read reference

Marc Lynch is professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University, where he is the director of the Institute for Middle East Studies and of the Project on Middle East Political Science. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, and a contributing editor at the Monkey Cage blog for The Washington Post. He is the codirector of the Blogs and Bullets project at the US Institute of Peace. He formerly launched and edited the Middle East Channel on ForeignPolicy.com. The New Arab Wars outlines the regional conflicts in the Middle East and the political and ideological factors involved. This book is effectively a political science book that can get the casual reader much more versed into the differences between the countries and the interest of regional powers in any given country. To get an understanding of what is going on in Syria, Libya with ISIS, Yemen, Egypt, etc... this book is a must read and can give a deeper insight into what various interests and why are driving the conflicts rather than the good and evil narratives that come through with too great abundance through the 24 hour news service.The New Arab Wars discusses recent events in the middle east focusing on Syria, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain and Tunisia. Despite most headlines trumpeting ideological reasons for who should be in charge the author discusses which regional powers have direct interests and spheres of influence concerns in the various countries. In particular in the Middle East there are those fearful of the rise of Iran and its sphere of influence, Saudi Arabia with the UAE and Qatar as an opposing interest in favor of the Muslim brotherhood. Due to the competing interests both political and ideological there is an abundance of spin that comes out of the news trying to gather support. Furthermore the willingness to finance groups who would further certain groups political goals has led to a massive proxy war in the region as arms have been fed into tribal and ideologically driven groups for often quite shallow reasons. The US has been far less willing to fund and expand their war effort so much of the conflict is due to the escalating proxy war of regional powers with deep pockets. It is tragic as the human side of the equation is what is suffering the most by far.The New Arab Wars gives a window into the political science of the conflicts in the Middle East. The author discusses how the promotion of democracy as an ideal that is pushed by the US cannot be taken at face value as Bahrain had the support of the US in using force to suppress civil unrest but elsewhere did not due to the closer relationship of the US with Bahrain. Furthermore the fall of the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt whose election was a manifestation of a move toward democracy was a tragic step back for the country that should have been stabilized by the US. There is an inherent conflict of interest in the power struggle in the Middle East. The allies of the US are not democratic so the idea that for current events the US will put ideology above regional relationships is flawed. The balance of power is the center of concern in the region and sectarian conflict the norm. Democracy leads to majoritarian outcomes which are destabilizing and the regional conflicts are real between Saudi, Iraq, Iran and Qatar. The conflict and proxy war that is being fought in Syria was inevitable given the intrinsic interests known ex-ante and though there are very obvious moral dimensions to the conflict there are many issues under the hood if one looks at the regions history and associated parties. Very informative and timely.

Marc Lynch (aka blogger "Abu Aardvark") wrote the best account of the Arab Spring uprisings in his 2012 The Arab Uprising: The Unfinished Revolutions of the New Middle East. This follow-up account does a masterful job of placing those uprisings in context. It is well-written, easily accessible, and compact account of the unraveling of the regional order in the Arab World by one of today's top experts on the region. Lynch's greatest strength is in succinctly detailing the multiple forces driving events, illustrating the complexity of the problem without getting bogged down in tangents or excess detail.Lynch draws a direct line from the crushing Arab autocracies of the 1990s and early 2000s to today's terror and civil war. Lynch's account balances local conditions and regional order, detailing how the U.S. "War on Terror" increased local despots' freedom to crush their own populations. He draws on his own deep knowledge of Arab-language media sources to support his claim that the erosion of U.S. leverage in the region is the product of the invasion of Iraq and close ties to dictators, rather than policy missteps by President Obama. Not all readers will agree with Lynch's argument, but his book makes a powerful contribution to the policy discussion.

Any person who believes in making a positive difference, and who also realizes the extent to which effective implementation will make or break the success of an effort, would appreciate Professor Lynch's thoughtful review of the Arab Spring to-date.While I was attracted to this book because I wanted a guide to the modern Middle East, I would recommended it to anyone who wants to take a serious role in a cross-sector organization, as a strategist, as a practitioner, or as a political leader. You probably need at least some basic context of the Middle East to fully appreciate the book – but you don't need too much at all!Thank you Professor Lynch for such an incredible contribution, and for making those of us who are practitioners more effective at what we do.PS. As a follow up, I can't help but wonder whether "we" (the U.S., U.S. universities, and ideally others – my "we" is loosely defined) could offer free modules on governance and government institutions to anyone with a refugee status. Probably shorter than a masters degree but longer than a summer. And probably residential programs. High-quality programming in this area – obviously with the right people in place to ensure access to the program – could begin to build the leadership skillsets of those who have been impacted by the suffering that Professor Lynch's book details so vividly.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful classic story and it gets 5 stars. This particular printing, however, is completely unacceptable. It's as if someone typed it into a document, and printed it off--no page numbers, not titled at the top of each page, the lines don't even break properly (see photo). Purchased as a gift, thankfully with enough time to purchase a better quality copy--probably for less money! A disgrace to the publishing community.

I LOVED Anne of Green Gables as a child and own the complete hard copy of the Anne series. Initially, I was delighted to find this collection of books written by one of my all time favorite authors for only $0.99 (kindle price. What a steal!) and felt I had to get the digital copy for my kindle at once. As soon as the product was delivered to my device, I began to read it since it's been years since I've visited the darling world that L.M Montgomery created.I was very surprised to find that I kept tripping on certain sentences; the writing didn't seem as smooth as I remembered. When I got to chapter 6, I decided to compare a sentence in the digital print to my old, yellowing physical copy of Anne of Green Gables book. I realized why I had some difficulty reading my new digital copy: THERE ARE TYPOS IN THIS PRODUCT.It contains the WORST kinds of typos. There are typos in which it results in sentences that don't make sense. There are typos with the wrong pronouns in them that make it confusing for the reader to understand which character the publisher meant to write about. I am able to follow the story because I've read Anne of Green Gables more than once with my hard copy but for new readers, these typos will make this beautiful story difficult to read and at times, understand.I hope the digital copy can be fixed so that owners can enjoy L.M. Montgomery's work as it was meant to be enjoyed. I have given this two stars instead of one because of the fabulous price for kindle readers.

BUYER BEWARE! The version published by "CreateSpace" is slapdash print-on-demand garbage. I hoped an illustrated version would be good for a child, but I returned it on first inspection. Nowhere could I find evidence of thought or effort in layout to justify any price. Illustrations are small, extremely infrequent, and essentially worthless. Some shameless soul has simply taken LM Montgomery's text, which, as it is in the public domain, is freely available to anyone, and tried to make money selling it. Interested readers would be advised to download a free ebook or pay for a handsomer edition, such as the Puffin In Bloom version. We went with the Puffin in Bloom version and are much more satisfied.

This is a great book, but buying this edition which Marco Pedulla purports to have translated constitutes buying stolen property.The book was written in Englilsh, so Pedulla has translated nothing. What he has done has taken material free in the public domain and offered it on Amazon.Amazon should NOT support theft.

The illustrations are actually random pictures that are creepy since they are in the beginning when Anne meets Mathew Cuthbert so they insinuate a romance between them. And the free audiobook is click bait to set you up to download an app and give your email address to spammers. Screen shots of the "illustrations" below.

This review is of the kindle version of Anne: The Green Gables Complete Collection and does not reflect on the L.M. Montgomery text. The Anne books have always been favorites of mine. Buy the book, but get another edition! First issue: Really random pics grabbed from some art history textbook do not qualify as illustrations. They are more distracting than I would have imagined. Why didn't they leave the totally unrelated images out? Second issue: This is some new definition of complete that I am unacquainted with. This is Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea only. None of the later books are included. False advertising. A text I am being pulled out of by unnecessary distractions. There have to be better options. I am going in search of one.
