My copy is dog-eared!This is one of the first books I bought by Liana Lowenstein. It is such an excellent resource and contains activities and techniques that are fun but help children easily open up about their feelings.

I bought this book when I was working with children with serious emotional disturbances. I worked with children ages 5-17. I definitely recommend this book for people who work with younger children, probably ages 5-10, as it is directed towards a younger audience.This book has some great interventions that are useful when working with children with SED, although I would recommend that you have some background in mental health. Many of the interventions can be done with few supplies, or use supplies that are easy to find or you might already have on hand. They are also easy to adapt if you want to change the way a game or activity is played.

I just received this book, but since I work with Special Needs children I opened it as soon as I got rid of the cardboard.It is full of interesting information and ideas I can implement right away. I am happy I bought it.

There is also an `At A Glance' section to help you determine which activities to choose from based on category, age range, and modality (group, individual, or family).Each activity is created to provide ease of use with the materials listed out, along with potential goals and a post-activity discussion component. I also love that the activities come with their own worksheets or use common materials you are likely to have on-hand or can obtain for minimal cost. I highly recommend this book.

This is one of my favorite resources to use with children and adolescents. The book offers a variety of games, exercises, and therapeutic tools to help children who are struggling. Chapters focus on emotion identification, coping skills, self-esteem, and social skills. This book is a must have for any mental health professional working with children. The activities give guidance for age group, treatment problem, and a of list material items needed for activities. The activities are hands on and give the children coping skills and tools to use in everyday life. I have used this book so much I had to tape the binding!!!! This book has been a lot of help! Most of the interventions are simple and require simply making copies, while other require more forethought and planning, like purchasing special games or props (a specific board game, poker chips, prizes, specific toys, etc.). In any case, this book has been a lot of help and the kids have loved the interventions I have tried. More importantly, I was able to get to know my clients better and find out important things I probably would not have found out otherwise. I highly recommend this book for beginner therapists, therapists w/ limited experience working w/ children, and/or anyone who wants to learn a few interesting interventions.

Bought the book hoping to find some creative ways to engage children and youth. With some web searching, I could find similar interventions/ideas. Also, the book relies on purchasing a lot of kids games, which may or may not fit your budget. Perhaps the book could be of some use to someone who has no idea what to do, but it turned out to be not that useful to me.

Many of the activities in this book are based around specific board games. As a new clinician I do not have the money to finance a lot of games. There were some good activities that don't involve games, but overall I did not get a lot of use out of it.

My first summer in the Sierra by John MuirAlways enjoy the outside, walking discovering new things.Have watched many on the John Muir Trail in CA and watched shows but having it all described is like being there, doing it ourselves.Like listening to his journals and everything he sketches, plant, animal, etc.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This is the first book of John Muir that I have read. I’ve read other naturalists/environmentalists, such as Henry David Thoreau, Joseph Wood Krutch, and Edward Abbey, but it seems that Muir is in a class of his own. I was stunned by his erudition. He knew the names of the animals, plants and rock formations in an area that he had never been before, including passing through several climatic zones, as he climbed in elevation. (I had to keep recalling that he was not carrying a guidebook, replete with full-color pictures of the plants he was observing.) His writing is infused with a deep reverence for the natural world… even a beautiful infectious unbridled enthusiasm to “do it all,” to savor as much as one possibly can of the natural world. I first became acquainted with his name more than 25 years ago, when I visited the magnificent redwoods that bear his name, just north of San Francisco. Tis a pity it took so long to read his actual words.Muir “hitched a ride,” that is, seized an opportunity and joined in the “old-fashioned” practice of transhumance. “Old-fashioned,” in that it is a practice in decline, defeated by the primacy of fences and “property rights.” But the practice of moving livestock to better grazing, in particular to higher elevations in the summer, has existed for thousands of years. In June 1869, he joined 2500 sheep, as they moved from the Merced valley in central California, and walked with them into the high Sierra Mountains, in the area of current day Yosemite National Park, and returned to the lowlands by the equinox. He did not have required duties – a professional shepherd, along with assistants – handled the “grunt work.” Three magnificent months to observe a country that had just been opened to exploration by the white man largely in the last two decades, thanks to the ’49 “Gold Rush.” Three months of living outside, largely without shelter, and “reading” only the natural world.I found his writing to be dense, like a fine chocolate bar, and could rarely read more than 15 pages at a time without taking a break to think about his observations. In one section, he contemplates the many different paths raindrops take. In another, he examines the lives of three very different creatures: the bear, the grasshopper and the common housefly. For sure, he provides anthropomorphic characterizations. He has a keen geological “eye,” spotting signs of glacial action in prior times. Clearly his heart lies in the very high country of the Sierra, around Lake Tenaya. Somehow he knew about a flower called the cassiope bell, searched for it, and found it in profusion. It is wonderful nowadays to be able to see a picture of it on the internet, and understand immediately his enthusiasm. In yet another section, he relates his “telepathic” knowledge that his college teacher, Professor Butler, had just arrived in Yosemite.Muir does not like the sheep he has had to travel with, comparing them to locust, and at one point saying that he would rather herd wolves. He is also rather critical of the various Indian hunting groups that he encounters, always critical of their dirtiness. In general, he repeatedly praises the cleanliness of the natural world, but seems to be oblivious to the dirtiness of the sheep that are his companions.In the high country it is approximately two months of intense life between the melting of the snows and the arrival of the next frosts. On August 10, he says: “Another of those charming exhilarating days that make the blood dance and excite nerve currents that render one unwearable and well-nigh immortal.” In another section, he says of Yosemite’s cathedral: “Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life, every fibre thrilling like harp strings, while incense is ever flowing from the balsam bells and leaves. No wonder the hills and groves were God’s first temples, and the more they are cut down and hewn into cathedrals and churches, the farther off and dimmer seems the Lord himself. The same may be said of stone temples.”Yes, at times his exuberance can be “over the top.” So be it, for it seems that he can see deeper than us average mortals. 5-stars.

I bought this because I was tired of checking it out from my Library. The Book is wonderful and everyone with a love for the outdoors or just good writing should read it.It's this printing I have a problem with. The size of the book is awkward, and completely unnecessarily so because the blank margin space is huge. The print is big too, but it's also fuzzy and hard to read. Lots of wasted thick paper here (which will only make you feel guilty as you read about the beauty of the trees). All in all this feels similar to reading an instructional manual that was printed on a poorly calibrated home printer. There are other copies of this book available, I would recommend choosing one of them.

First Summer in the Sierra was a delight to read. John Muir's diary is fascinating due to his capacity of describing the different landscapes along his route as one of the shepherds tending a big flock of sheeps the Yosemite River Valley and the High Sierra. To the accuracy of the geographical description he adds its evolution, its changes in flora and fauna distribution, the rythm of days and seasons, the variations in the color and the clouds. All this, added to his spiritual response, told in a poetic manner. His sketches, and the latter added photographs, are enriching in spite of the fact that I read the book in its Kindle edition.

Bought this for my newly retired dad who finally has time to read now. HeLoves the outdoors and they visit national parks on the regular. He’s about half way through and loves the story.

I purchased the Gibbs Smith Hardcover because of it's awesome artwork, however like the person that posted the photo review my copy was marked up and smudged on the cover. I ordered a replacement thinking I must have just received a returned one, but the replacement was even worse. So buyer beware, if you order the Gibbs Smith Version you might receive a messed up cover.

I first read this book in the '60s after I had already visited Yosemite. This new edition is a very nice piece of work, and it is really a great introduction to John Muir. For one who has traveled extensively in Yosemite territory it is a pleasure to see that country through Muir's eyes 100 or more years earlier.

I have always wanted to read Muir. This style of writing is not for everyone - Muir goes to great lengths to use his senses to describe everything he encounters. I found those descriptions enlightening, detailed, and exhilarating. Some might find it monotonous, and I would understand that.

It is a no-brainer for me to recommend this book as I love John Muir and live in the Sierra foothills close to all the places described. Having hiked some of the well marked trails on the John Muir trail it is amazing to think that he “trail blazed” without all the information and guidebooks available to us today. The book arrived as promised and service was excellent.

The fit is OK but the material is sensitive to static electricity...so much that you actually get shocked when you put it on. You can see the thing sparkling as you pick it up and open it in preparation to putting it on. Can not recommend it.

This book is being used as a course book of st. of materials in n.e.d. university but the great insufficiency of this book is about its text,which on many ocassions remains a mystery.one particular aspect which i would like to enlighten is about chapter 11 and the topic is the buckling phenomena which is particularly ill-explained.Ihope my review would be given due consideration.

My nephew LOVED unwrapping this present on Christmas morning! He's not quite 3, and was tearing through presents searching for jets in the form of toys. Watching him, I honestly thought he'd shrug and turn away when finally getting to this, so I kind of prepared myself for a pinch of disappointment. But he surprised me when, upon seeing the cover, his face lit up and he asked his mamma for help getting the rest of the paper off the corners. He immediately flipped through pages, patiently looking through each and spending more time on some than others. I very nearly held off giving this to him this year because it felt beyond the connection of a 3 year old. I mean, I'm in my 30s, and when flipping through this, it seemed pretty technical and definitely more about facts, no story. Blew my mind when I realized my nephew was actually familiar with many of the jets within the pages, and listened when his parents read aloud interesting details or information about them. So wonderful! Glad I didn't hold onto it, as it's something he will certainly continue to grow into and understand more as he grows. Thanks for a great book!

My 3 year old is obsessed with airplanes right now. The only thing I would change is, I wish it were a hard back book. Kids don’t care for books they love that well. I don’t see it lasting too long with how much we read it.

Nice book. Quickly recieved but because of being poorly handled it arrived with a giant crease down the middle including part of the spine of the book that was coming away from the paper-backing. This did not deter my grandson....only his grandmother. I understand this happened in shipping but some easy and inexpensive changes could rectify this issue easily.

We were given the Airplane Alphabet as a birthday gift for my son. We liked it so much that we bought this one for Christmas! It's a great read for kids and adults. Both books have been conversation starters that have led to family stories, of grandparents and great grandparents, who remember or even flew some of the planes! Great books, timely shipping, great prices!

This product was listed as “good condition” but as you can see from the pics it is not. The writing didn’t bother me as much as the page for the letter “x” being ripped. Sending it back, can’t give this as a gift as intended.

My two-year old grandson has made this one of his favorite books; he goes to it on his own quite often.The artwork is terrific and ultra-realistic. Very engaging.

I inititally bought this book for my 2 year old since he is learning his letters. But I just got this book in the mail, and am so excited about it, it will be great for the older kids as well. (They are all starting to get interested in fighter jets) It has a lot of different planes in it, and great information about each. It is very well written. I am getting on here now to order a second book for my nephews in first grade. Some of the planes it talks about: E-3, F-16, Harrier, KC-10, F-117, SR-71, F-4, F-22, B-2, F-14, U-2, X-13, and A-10. I have never written a review, that is how much I liked this book.

We love all of Pallotta's books. I'm tempted to say the airplane ones are for older kids but I think it is just interest based. My not-quite 2 and 1/2 yr old learned his alphabet from these books. He loves all the books about fish.

I pretty much loved this book. Taking place during the Bosnian/Serbian conflict, it tells of primarily civilian life in a Sarajevo under siege. The people on whom the book centers lead sad, grim, terrified, and ultimately--at least for these characters--life-affirming lives amid the chaos. To begin with, these lives are limited and pretty tedious, circumscribed by the so difficult-to-achieve needs of daily life and the shells that fall around them and the snipers who shoot from the hills about Sarajevo almost randomly, picking off people trying merely to survive.A catalyst arrives, however, in the form of an old cellist. He has watched from his window as a shell lands amid a crowd of his friends and neighbors lined up simply for bread. Twenty-two people are killed, and the cellist decides that he will stand at the site of the killing for twenty-two days and memorialize these people by playing a specific adagio once each day. He has no idea whether he will survive for this length of time or whether another shell will fall here or a sniper will pick him off, but he decides that acknowledging this portion of lost humanity is more important than his own personal survival. And so he begins.As the other people we are reading about slowly absorb his music, little by little they are reminded, not just of better times, but of better values. Survival alone is not enough for life; something more is required. For example, the family man who spends so much of his time just getting enough fresh water for his family to drink--a very dangerous mission through multiple sniper points--decides that no matter how much more dangerous it will be, he will continue to provide water for his elderly and most unpleasant neighbor as well. The other characters we are following make different but similarly motivated decisions as well. In so doing they endorse, not just life, but human values. And the fact that these decisions are dangerous is brought home to the reader when a favorite character does not survive the decision made.This is a story full of irony and contradiction. Just as the Adagio the cellist plays is a reconstruction of a fragment mostly destroyed in a previous war and possibly not even true to the original, the decisions made are fragmentary returns to different values and most are themselves contradictory. One character chooses to honor life by dignifying the dead. Another chooses death itself rather than the taking of life. The book seems to be saying that a well-lived life is itself dangerous and contradictory.However grim, this is also a beautiful story--one that I highly recommend.

I came upon Steven Galloway’s novel “The Cellist of Sarajevo” while I was doing research on Vedran Smailovic, the true cellist of Sarajevo and after I learned that Smailovic was intensely angry that Galloway had used him as the inspiration for his novel and mis-represented him in many ways. Hence, I must say my perspective was rather biased as I read the novel after living in Sarajevo for 9 months and understanding a bit about Smailovic and the siege. I am rather surprised, therefore, by all the accolades that have been bestowed upon Galloway’s book and by its longevity as reflected in the fact that the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus featured the book at a recent evening lecture, punctuated by a talented young cellist and a professor who talked about the intimate human-like quality of a cello.I did not find the characters in Galloway’s books especially appealing. I know Arrow was based on a real character, actually a Serbian who killed Serbs for the Bosnian side ([...]) and who claimed to have a bad conscience from all her killings although she claimed from her hospital bed to be a “war junkie.” I had difficulty reconciling Galloway’s introspective narrative on Arrow’s internal thoughts and reflections with my own view of Arrow and the siege. I was not sure why the characters, Arrow, Dragan, and Kenan, were so perplexed about the purpose of the cellist’s acts, or why he seemed to be a rather vague symbol in the novel, despite its title. From what I read about the real cellist, he was expressing his response to the siege in the language that naturally emanated from his soul and was also paying homage to the many victims of the war. Rather than perplexing to Bosnians, he inspired them, gave them courage to take a stand for the civilization that they referred and the cosmopolitanism that Sarajevo stood for. I found it far-fetching that the Serbian sniper was so mesmerized by the cellist’s playing that he hesitated and dreamed so that Arrow could easily kill him. For those who have not lived in Sarajevo and not read the real stories of survival, Galloway’s novel is no doubt powerful . It has certainly played a significant role in providing readers the experience of the horror of war, and of the challenge of survival. But the siege was so much more complex than these experiences and its impact so much more far-reaching than any book could give justice to. Nonetheless, Galloway did an outstanding job with a difficult subject and presented three different faces and perspective from which people saw and lived those horrible days of destruction. I am glad I read it despite my misgivings.

I was so overwhelmed by this story that I can't find the right words to write about it. I'm both sorry and relieved that it's over -- sorry because it was enjoyable to read, yet relieved because it's persistent tension was finally over.This is the story of a how the music played by a cellist in the street of a war-torn city provides a few minutes of harmony each day to soothe the constant fear and suffering of the people who live there.The fear and suffering are reflected in three characters who never interact with each other. One is a man whose life revolves around walking to gather bottles of water from the town's brewery for his family. Another man, whose wife and children escaped to Italy, works at a bakery and brings home fresh bread to his sister's family, with whom he is living. The third chapter is a young female sniper who wages a private individual war with the men occupying the hill above their city.Steven Galloway made me feel like I was on those streets alongside those characters as they wondered whether someone on the hill would shoot them as they crossed the street. Their fear and helplessness became my own, and their love of what their city had once been to them reminded me of what I loved about my own home town.I'm still not sure I've found the right words, but there's no doubt about the powerful and profound impact this story has had on me.
