I’ve been following Catra and her story since I became a runner a couple of years ago. The more I read about her, the more I identified with her and I’ve always felt a connection with her. I always hoped that she would write a book someday. My fitness journey is very similar to hers as I too believe that running has saved me. It is my therapy. When I’m out on the trails, I feel a spiritual connection between myself and nature and it’s unlike any feeling I’ve ever felt before. Catra describes this perfectly in her book and at times I felt like she was speaking for me. I finished the book in two days as I was unable to put it down after I started it! I look up to Catra and I hope to advance in my running as she has. Catra is not only a great runner, but she is also a great person who truly cares for others. I am a social worker so this concern for others is also very near and dear to me. I’ve been telling friends and co-workers who are interested in following a healthy lifestyle about Catra and encouraging them to read her story. I know that she will inspire them just as she has inspired me! I want to thank her for putting herself out there and sharing her story!!!

Started reading this book the minute it loaded onto my PC and never put it down. From the first chapter it becomes very clear that Catra Corbett ain't no sissy. "Are you f-ing kidding me? I answered. "I came to run a f-ing hundred miler. I'm not stopping now." This hardcore outlook on life is what carried her thru from addiction to Ultramarathons, with many learning experiences and painful heartache along the way. You might think this book is about running, but it is about so much more. This story is about a woman with a huge heart who refused to give up on herself, even when she lost everything. It's the story of finding strength in yourself out on the trail and learning that putting your best foot forward is all we have sometimes. It's about loss and grief and personal fortitude. It's about lightning storms and blisters and discovering a community of friends along the way. It's about loving others and learning to love yourself. It about one woman's journey to epic badassery! Oh, and it's about wiener dogs, too!

I started this book on a Friday night (Kindle version) and picked it back up the next day to finish it. I couldn’t read it fast enough!Catra’s story resonates with me. Not the drugs part, but dealing with the pain and loss of a parent. I’ve been a runner as long as I can remember - until my Mom died a couple of years ago. After finishing this book, I pulled out my dusty running shoes and ran. I’m still running, and if I ever see a tiny ball of energy with pink hair and tattoos on the AZ trails, I’ll thank Catra in person.The book is a good read and caught my attention from the start. As I said, I pretty much read it a day. I love the added photos. And I like how real and honest Catra is.Anyone looking for an inspiring, honest, gritty, mind-boggling (her endurance is insane!) and heart-warming story should read this book!

I first heard of the Dirt Diva back in 2004 when she first set a John Muir Trail speed record, and have been Facebook friends for a long time, as I post JMT records on my website. I've never met her in person, though crossed paths on Mission Peak once. Her exploits over the years have been amazing, and this book gives some insight into what makes Catra run. It is a good read, and I am sure, encouraging to anyone trying to overcome an addiction. It is also an insightful view of just what gets someone into meth.If you are looking for a story of fortitude, of overcoming pain, of total focus, then this book will keep you engaged. If you are looking for the story of what makes ultra athletes, this is the story for you. If you are looking for a way out of addiction, this is the story for you.

This memoir is written in a straightforward, non-floof style, with some repetition. It doesn't need a bunch of flair though, it's an amazing book because the "badass," "epic" events described are truly that.Ex-goth clubber, ex-meth addict, Catra Corbett has run 100 mile runs more than 100 times and more than 220 ultramarathons. She has run every day since Nov. 2012 and ran 50 consecutive hours on her 50th birthday. It's hard to even fathom some of her accomplishments and credits in the ultrarunning world i.e. her speed record on the 425 mile John Muir Trail.In addition:She's run those miles on a raw vegan, largely fruitarian, diet.She participated in the Icebreaker relay run across the United States to raise awareness of mental health.She's fostered rescue dogs and adopted one fearful dog who has become her running companion. Love this quote: "TruMan saved me because I wanted a better life for him, and that gave me a better life for me too." I'd love to see another memoir focused on her adventures with her dog.

Catra Corbett has been one of my biggest running inspirations for a while now, but this book made me love her even more. I had no idea about her past before picking this book up, I just knew that she was a badass female runner over 50 who I definitely wanted to be like. Learning about her story was really impactful and made me know that I definitely want to run an ultra one day, and that she is even more amazing than I could have imagined. If you're a fan of running, badass women, adorable doxies, or are interested in narratives about overcoming addiction, this book is probably for you.There are a few minor editing issues that made me want to figure out how to offer to edit all of her work for free (because I love her, and therefore could never charge her), but the story more than made up for the odd misplaced word. So if you're a grammar freak...calm down. It will be okay. Enjoy the book anyway.

Excellent book!This book is a tool in learning how to compose music for video games whether you are a novice or an expert. It is written from a textbook perspective, so there are many activities/assignments to push you to write and think creatively and critically about the concepts of the book. The concepts of the book do not have to be linear. You can go through it cover to cover or you can zero in on specific topics of interest to help your composition experience.

I've had the pleasure to meet Chance Thomas last year when this book was about to be published. After ordering it, I've read through carefully the first few chapters and am very inspired by his instructions. Besides the inspiring language in the book, there are plenty of extra content like side bubbles of interviews from other composers that are related to the topic at hand. Not only that, there is a website (under contruction) that includes listening examples and videos. He lays out the book in several sections from Principles, Process, Business, Evolution and Appendages. I highly recommend it!

Very well researched and alarming. Whilst the focus of much concern has been in the Russian meddling this book makes clear it has been the decades long growth of far right media in the form of Fox News which is the rampaging Gorilla destroying U.S. democracy.

If you want original research and in depth discussion and analysis of disinformation and media network structure, this is the book for you. You can find earlier research at the Harvard Berkman Klein Center for Internet Research at Harvard, where these academics reside, and you can also find less detailed but confirming research at Knight Foundation's professional journalism research.I particularly like the factual detail and close analysis of the 2016 election, as well as the evolution of media structures over time and how they amplify or dampen misinformation.This is really a good book, and one which I will share with and recommend to others.

This is a complicated read, but very important for all those who want to know what's happening with news reporting and propaganda. It's a study! An important one.

It’s a new era. According to the authors “Technological processes beyond the control of any person or country – the convergence of social media, algorithmic news curation, bots, artificial intelligence, and big data analysis – were creating echo chambers that reinforced our biases, were removing indicia or trustworthiness, and were generally overwhelming our capacity to make sense of the world, and with it our capacity to govern ourselves as reasonable democracies.” In this book, the authors discuss these issues by applying a wide range of tools and data sets along with review of literature that developed before and after the 2016 election. We see how the party of Reagan and the two Bush presidents was defeated by the party of Trump, Breitbart, and billionaire Robert Mercer. Their work explains how a media ecosystem that initially benefited the GOPs gain of power ultimately spun out of control.The first part of the book is entitled “Epistemic Crisis.” The authors use many charts and diagrams to make their points. These charts are very enlightening. Part of the problem was the “adoption by major media of the framing and agenda-setting efforts of the right wing and the Trump campaign.” The Clinton scandal consumed the bulk of the media news – not good if you want to win an election. An interesting point made by the authors concerning the Russian interference, Facebook algorithms and such is that these things depended on “the asymmetric partisan ecosystem that has developed over the past four decades.” In other words, technology can exacerbate existing conditions to the point of crisis only if the existing underlying fabric of society is already frayed. The authors continue with definitions of propaganda and it elements – words such as, manipulation, disinformation, network propaganda, propaganda feedback loop, propaganda pipeline, and the attention backbone. There are then the effects of propaganda such as, induced misperceptions, distraction, disorientation, and misinformation. This is followed by enhancing our understanding of “the entire ecosystem: the outlets and influencers who form networks, the structure of networks, and the flow of information in networks.” What is interesting is the virtual absence of the center-right. Further right, we see how Facebook, for example, gave a large audience to Breitbart with a more normal distribution of sites on the left. Once again, the authors make good use of charts and diagrams to illustrate the data. I also found interesting that the authors concluded “that architecture and the institutional character of the media outlets that constitute it, more that the Russians, more than the fake news entrepreneurs, more than Facebook advertising, and more than Cambridge Analytica, are most directly responsible for the relevance and success of disinformation, propaganda […] in the American media ecosystem.” A consistent pattern becomes discernable from the data: there is not left-right division, but rather a division between the right and the rest of the media ecosystem. The right wing behaves as predicted by models – exhibiting high insularity with susceptibility to information cascades, rumor and conspiracy. A system of correcting falsehoods is not in play here. On the left, however, there exists a media system exhibiting structural features that are more robust to propaganda efforts and offer more avenues for self-correction.Part Two gets into the dynamics of network propaganda. Here the authors discuss three primary mechanisms by which media ecosystems affect politics: agenda setting, priming, and framing. One chapter delves into immigration and islamophobia, where we see the agenda is about immigration. After the 2005 to 2007 years of bipartisan efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform, we see views on this subject diverge sharply. Again, the authors provide a plethora of charts and tables to support their research. Breitbart sticks out as a bridge between white nationalists and the rest of the media ecosystem, and again the center, center-left, and left seem to form a single media ecosystem. Another chapter is devoted to discussing three detailed case studies “of how Fox News actively used its position at the core of the right-wing media ecosystem to support the president in the central political controversy of his presidency.” Discussed is the “deep state,” the Seth Rich conspiracy theory, and the Uranium One story. What I found interesting is that the theme of mainstream media bias touted by the right has existed at least since the 1944 launch of the right-wing magazine Human Events. Another interesting revelation is that the pattern of coverage of Clinton’s email scandal show little difference between top right-wing publications and top center and center-left publications. Through many charts and diagrams, the authors showed just how, “Conspiracy theories, falsehoods, and rumors that fit the tribal narrative diffuse more broadly and are sustained for longer on the right than in the rest of the media ecosystem.”In Part Three, attention is turned to “the primary culprits that have received more sustained public attention as the alleged causes of our present moment of information disorder.” We are given examples of the “propaganda pipeline,” which is the path from the periphery to the core though various “amplification sites.” We learn also that because of their insular nature, sites and social media diffusion networks that traffic in politically motivated falsehoods make the right wing more susceptible to penetration and less capable of self-correction. This allows Russian propaganda efforts consistent with right-wing American framings to insert themselves and gain credence in their media system. There is more discussion about sockpuppets, bots, cyborgs, and ads and their influence in the election. This discussion corners around Facebook, Instagram and the Internet Research Agency. We see the distinction between white and gray propaganda and useful idiots. In the end, authors tended to conclude that the hacking, doxing, and DNC leaks may have had minimal effect in the end. And, like span, politically-inflected commercial clickbait will be more of an irritant than a crisis. Instead, the authors note that “technological, institutional, and political dynamics have been interacting for over 40 years to lead the Republican Party and Republican voters to gradually become more extreme versions of themselves.” Another important point made is that while political elite and political activists have been growing apart ideologically, the majority of the public actually continue to hold moderate positions. What I find scary is the conclusion that most voters are generally disinterested in politics and ill-informed about political matters. They are “likely to make their voting choices based on a set of factors that have no relationship to the proposed agenda and competence of their favored candidate.” In many cases, they choose their favorite leaders, and then adopt the political views and stances of these leaders.The authors then segue into the origins of the asymmetry in the architecture of the American public sphere in the final part. We’re taken way back to Father Coughlin and his unfettered access by the FCC to the American public. By the 1960s, mainstream newspapers were already seen as biased by the right. Out of an interaction between technological and regulatory changes, we see emerge other mediums of communication such as cable, televangelism, and AM talk radio. Most of this benefited the conservative movement. In the discussion about the decentralization afforded by the internet and how it can support democratization, the authors mention a susceptibility to five major failure modes. Knowing these failure modes allows us to find possible solutions for our current epistemic crisis. Following this, we are given possible solutions to the matter. “The American online public sphere is a shambles because it was grafted onto a television and radio public sphere that was already deeply broken,” the authors say. Nevertheless they feel their study is both optimistic and pessimistic about the possibilities for democracy in an age of ubiquitously networked communications.

About the Author

Neal Kinsey grew up in southeast Missouri and worked on the farm for his father until he graduated from high school. To make his way through college, he worked part-time and summers as a crop reporter for the USDA's ASCS in Missouri and Illinois. He obtained his B.S. degree in marketing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. In the fall of 1966, Kinsey enrolled in a master's degree program in Food Industry Logistics in Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Here is where he first met Dr. William A. Albrecht, who later provided the technical training in soil fertility required by his present profession. In 1968 Kinsey moved to Texas and took a job with a large environmental research project conducted by Ambassador College at Big Sandy. He eventually became assistant to the Director. Later, he became business manager followed by agricultural operations manager for the Ambassador College Agriculture Department. While serving in this! capacity, he became a certified consultant for Brookside Farms Laboratory of New Knoxville, Ohio. In 1977 he established Kinsey Agricultural Services. His workshops and seminars take him all around the world to train hundreds of growers in soil balancing utilizing cation exchange specializing in building and maintaining soil for quality crop production.

Great information not readily available from other sources. Only problem is the guy repeats himself so much (perhaps unavoidable), that it gets confusing, particularly regarding calcium and magnesium and their interfaces.

At a guess the reviewer "A reader from New York" has never had anything to do with soils and farming. He/she just eats the end products.I am a farmer in Australia dealing with some of the hardest yet some of the most potentially productive soils as any in the USA. This book was recommended to me by a fellow farmer. After reading it I was stunned as to how much sense it made. I can now relate soil test data to what I see in the field and understand why some areas always produce more than others. It's not "quackery" when you can understand how mother nature and basic chemistry allow some areas of a field to outperform others by sometimes 3-1.Readers of this book should be farmers who are willing to take a close look at their soils, work the numbers, think about it and then be prepared to accept what they WILL see in it all.I am by no means an organic farmer, I still use some commercial fertilizers and spray about as much as anyone. After reading this book I have started working on balancing the soil because I see from experience the most balanced soils producing the best crops.I don't really care if Neal Kinsey has a consulting practice on soils. And as far as the book being a bit "light on" for detail is concerned, well it's not. It is a great first step to understanding the soil we grow things in. Fertilizer brouchures are light on for detail.Happy reading and I hope the little light bulb gets turned on in your head like it did in mine.

Attending one of Mr. Kinsey's seminars and visiting with the farmers who have implemented his programs will convince the most staunch skeptic. His concept of "Feeding the soil and let the soil feed the plant" makes perfect sense. All elements in the soil must be within specific parameters for any plant to grow and produce to its full potential. Too much of the research results and recommendations that are available are tied to some corporate sponsorship that is ultimately tied to a product they wish to sell whether it is needed or not. Mr. Kinsey's success in 50 states and 50 countries speaks for itself. If you are a serious steward of the land and intend to stay in business in agriculture this book will help you get the not only more yield but higher quality products from your operation.

This book seems ideally suited for the land grant university student or farmer with a biology or chemistry degree perusing a livelihood in large scale or industrial agriculture. I am a small farmer without a degree but a very solid understanding of bio and chem and I found this book to be a bit daunting. The book starts out with a series of case studies in which the author always emerges as the hero. After the advertisements for his service and all the high-horsemanship you begin to smell the meat and potatoes. What follows is a complicated mess of NPK, pounds per acre and yield. Small attempts are made at including holistic management techniques but they are weakly explained and sparse. This book is advertised to farmers but the chem and bio concepts are difficult and without prior knowledge you will need to do significant outside the book research to follow along. If you are a medium to large scale farmer growing conventional commodity crops, and have prior knowledge to or a significant interest in learning these tough concepts this book may be useful. I would not recommend this book to Multi-croppers, pasture based, organic or small farmers in general. This book made me question the role of leading agronomists in a future SUSTAINABLE food production system.

Good book but I am more disappointed about the author since he has been in the news about his sexual accusations.

This is a young adult version of "The Heart and the Fist". Not much new for me since I had previously read "The Heart and the Fist". I bought this book to give to my 15-year-old grandson, so it's very appropriate for that. If you are an adult, I would recommend "The Heart and the Fist", by Eric Greitens (same author) instead of this book.

Given that Greiten's work is a scaled down version of his earlier " The Heart And The Fist " the author does a wonderful job of melding his divergent experiences together while, at the same time, presents clear and not to be forgotten lessons for young readers. A must read when one considers mental toughness and living a life of purpose.

After hearing Eric Greitens speak at a university commencement earlier this year, I was eager to read The Warrior's Heart: Becoming a Man of Courage and Compassion, an adaptation of his book The Heart and the Fist. Mr. Greitens is an engaging speaker - someone whose words challenge, uplift and inspire. He is refreshing, sincere and really quite remarkable. I worried that his book would not come close to the "real life" version of his message, but I was wrong.The Warrior's Heart is a thoroughly captivating narrative of Mr. Greitens' journey to become "a man of compassion and courage." It is a quick read, pulling readers in by putting them into various "what would you do?" scenarios. Woven throughout the book are examples of civic engagement as well as character lessons. Integrity, duty, service, perseverance, kindness, commitment, and yes, courage and compassion, are illustrated in Mr. Greitens' experiences from China to Croatia, Bosnia to Bolivia and eventually in his Navy SEAL training. The message never comes across as preachy, only illuminating and enlightening. This book is action-packed, yet poignant and thought-provoking.Mr. Greitens asks readers to "be more than just good, and better than just strong" by doing more than just "living for ourselves." I enjoyed this book and its message immensely. As a community leader charged with promoting civic and character education in our schools, I am excited about sharing this book with educators and students throughout my state. It has the power to motivate and inspire young people to become men and women who make a difference - people of compassion and courage.

I sent him this for Christmas, writing only that "some of this is not for you" so he would get that I did not consider him a teen.Eric Greitens might write in short chapters, even as Dan Brown did in "The Vinci Code." But what he tells and how he tells it of personal enounters with real hard challenges, most ones he has chosen for growth, rivets a reader.This is a brief review and if it is to serve anyone, it has to help someone decide if this is his cup of tea. Don't buy this book if you cannot be inspired when you are too old to even dream of becoming a Navy Seal. I was a conscientious objector when Vietnam was raging. Eric Greitens is a conscientious and compassionate warrior way far along a path as humanitarian. I nominate him for a Nobel Prize for Peace.

This book reads like a primer on how to "grow up" and do something significant no matter how big or small the "what gets done" is. Mr Greitens has done well in describing the multitude of problems which need work and provides sources to be involved. He put his life on the line, no small feat. In the end, we are all brothers and sisters - we need each other and this book shows how first steps can be taken whether as a SEAL or as a volunteer to put our lives on the line for others. Great read.

I enjoyed reading this book very much. I think this book is a very interesting story of what a person can do if he or she really puts in the effort.I also think the story is good for all people not just the young. I am in my sixties and I have been showing service for most of my life. It is rewarding helping others to be as successful as they can be.

(Kindle version) Lao-Tsu has been a regular companion of mine for 40 + years.It's always interesting to find new translations, although this far for me nothing has beaten the Swedish translation by Henriksson&Hwang ( only in Swedish, though).I think I've read most of the English translations, my favourite is the Lau translation published by Penguin.This translation by Stenudd is very much in quality and sharpness in par with my Swedish favourite.I rate this translation as absolutely brilliant, and definitely a must if you are a fan.The book is both chapters and commentaries.Commentaries can be very useful for someone who is not so familiar with the text, or wants a reflection on the chapters.For me as a frequent reader, I prefer to skip them(I know best anyway, don't I...;-)?)The text in this translation is so pregnant and sharp, that I just don't want to read about it, the joy of the text stands for itself.

His commentary is thorough but I disagree with some of his interpretations. I prefer Stephen Mitchell ' translation by far. I've heard Thomas Cleary ' translation is the best.

The author's explantions are very well written of Lao Tzu stories.

Good explanation of Tao.

Very well written for such an intense subject.

The 2071st translation is remarkably different!. The 2074th translation stands out as time well spent! The literary rendition of what was previously pure smut is great.

Great book if you want to compare the original Chinese scriptures with the English translations.
