I bought 20 books of this series. As a beginner English student, those collections have been very helpful during my study. It contains a variety of different subjects such as history, famous people, places and events. I really recommend these books for beginners or even for adults who wants a brief information about those books.

I purchased this book for my son who was behind in school with his reading. The book cover with what looks like bobble heads got his attention. He is in the 3rd grade and finds this reading easier for him to understand while learning about our history.

It's a great book for my 8 year old who picked Lincoln for a short book report. It easy to read for him and answered all of the questions he had about President Lincoln.

Love it. I have read several of the "Who was" books to my kids. Then they read them on their own a year or so later. GREAT BOOKS!

The biography is complete and interesting for young learners. I bought them for students who learn English as a second language and they are suitable for them.

My son could not put this book down. He enjoyed reading about his current favorite historical figure. He has even picked out a few more he wants to read from the series.

My daughter did a presentation on President Abraham Lincoln and the source material she had available was a bit much for the work to be enjoyable. This book was ordered alongside of a hat/beard costume piece (which was needed for the presentation). The book worked wonders and was well regarded by all of the children that read it. I will buy more from this series of books because the quality was solid.

My ADHD grandson has to read a nonfiction history text for a book report for 5th grade. I am always concerned when I buy a book if it will grab his attention. This did. And has a lot of information for his "newspaper front page" book report.

I had the good luck of listening to this on a long drive. The first question, whether this would be of interest to non-lawyers, is certainly yes. As long as you like American history, you will like this. The book takes a small slice of history and tells it almost novelistically. You can see the ruddy cheeks, mahogany paneling, feel the orations of Daniel Webster, learn about his expertise in politics, his high fees, and his decline. I remember so many cases from American History of yore that were fully explicated here - the Dartmouth College case - e.g. - and that I didn't quite get in high school or college. The book starts at Jamestown, and you learn of the horrors of that colony, which was a corporation, as was Plymouth Bay to the north. One learns about the precise reasons for the Boston Tea Party, not just the flaccid story of the courageous revolutionaries. Winkler tells us that all of the civil rights laws started with the rights of corporations, not people and that the first two - Dred Scott and a woman's right to be a lawyer - failed.The book hits a crescendo in the turn of the 20th Century and does not dwell on the present-day public outrages of Citizen's United and Hobby Lobby, but mentions them hint by hint throughout the narrative, giving a context to present day jurisprudence. All in all, this was for me a great "listen." The narrator was perfectly fine, but I bet the author wanted to tell the story, it is so assiduously researched and described in technicolor.

This book was hard to put down as it talks about how rich corporations used their influences on the Supreme Court to be considered persons under the 14th Amendment in order to get protection under the constitution. The 14th Amendment (along with the 13th and 15th) was written to integrate freed slaves legally into society, was usurped by the corporations to not be considered organizations but a gathering of people. The last remaining drafter of the 14th Amendment lied to convince the Supremes that Corporations were part of the definition of "persons as stated in the Amendment. A study done shows in a 30 year period some 300 14 Amendment cases were brought before the Supreme Court. Of those only 25 were race related in which was voted down every time (included I assume the infamous "Pleussy"). The rest were Corporate right's related which the corporations won every time.Funny how Conservatives and their like-minded Justices claim to narrowly define the Constitution to what is written rather than the intent (after all neither negro's nor slaves are mentioned in the 14 Amendment) Conservative interpretations have been used against their intended subjects (Like Pleussy), but when cases like Loving (Interacial marriage), Brown, and Gay marriage are decided using the intent of the Amendment those same Conservatives who have been twisting the amendment for corporations accuse those rulings of a "radical court exceeding its authority"People who are wondering how "Citizens United" and "Hobby Lobby" were decided need to know this is the result of a 150-year legal battle to get Corporations rights they don't deserve. I've been waiting for someone to put this information together in one book and this is it.

It is quiet in Founders' Heaven. All noses are pressed into Professor Winkler's book as heads bob in amazement at just how many rights corporations have been able to accumulate for themselves over the years.This book is a detailed walk through a lot of legal history. It is well-written, is relentlessly interesting, discusses a large cast of colorful characters who participated in this history, and is as necessary a read as you'll find on today's book shelves. You do not need to be an attorney to profit from reading this book. Its only disappointing feature is its honesty: this is a complex history. Better to understand it fully, than to pretend that history was simpler than it has been.

In the course of our history which was founded on Corporatism (and slavery ) we have come to conflate legal personages with living, breathing, thinking, feeling beings. The book has been written from the beginning to the end with simple language and commendable writing style. Before receiving this book, I had prepared and presented many construction claims during past number of years. Though they were accepted by clients without any adverse comment or remark, when the methodology and the style of suchpresentations shown in this book are considered, I have to accept my presentations were far below the standard.Commencing from Chapter 1 on Introduction and ending with Chapter 11 - A Note on Dispute Boards, Andy Hewitt has gifted us a marvelous publication, anybody dealing with claims to be studied and used as a valuable reference book.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It is as advertised, a book focused exclusively on one gene and how it relates to cancer. The author goes into great detail of how the gene was discovered and how it was originally misdiagnosed as a gene which causes cancer before its true nature was discovered. Of particular interests was the chapter, “The Smoking Gun” which discussed the discovery of how smoking caused a mutation at a specific location in this gene. It is this mutation which make people susceptible to cancer and this discovery which eventual led the cigarette companies to admit the truth. This was a particularly quick read. I would have preferred if the book strayed beyond the P53 gene and discuss more of the other genes related to cancer. Although well written, I am not sure there was enough information about just this one gene for an entire book. When reading the book and following through the scientific discoveries, the author would at times bring up a new scientist/researcher which she would then introduce in the book. She went into significant detail not only about the researcher’s life, but also about her interview with the researcher. She would discuss details about his house, expression property, etc. (almost like filler material). I found this to be more of a distraction and after reading this, I needed to go pack a few pages to remember what the topic of research was being discussed. Despite this one critique, I found this book to be very good and would recommend it to anyone interested in cancer research.

Fun and informative, this is worth a read. There is essentially no science here, and after a while the obligatory human interest nuggets which are the prelude to each new topic become a little irritating. P53 is an incredibly relevant protein in cancer and aging, but too little of its scientific contradictions and complexities come across. If the outcome of this read is to provoke curiosity but not satisfy it, it succeeds. This is in itself is a worthwhile objective, but fundamentally disappointing.

“… a gene that goes by the prosaic name of p53 - bestowed on it simply because it makes a protein with a molecular weight of 53 kilodaltons.” – from p53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODEp53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODE by Sue Armstrong seems to be a reasonably comprehensive overview of the topic that even those with but a modicum knowledge level of genetics and biochemistry should find readable and comprehensible.The author jumps back and forth in time to show how the aggregate work of a multitude of researchers accumulated and built on itself to arrive at the understanding we have today about p53. This lends the narrative a choppiness which might have been ameliorated at the conclusion if Armstrong had provided a concise summary of the scientific findings to date. This she failed to do and the book suffers somewhat for its absence.p53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODE is, however, a commendable contribution to the popular science genre.

Although I have been somewhat familiar with the p53 literature for a number of years, I was greatly informed and entertained by this narrative; the author does a fine job of weaving the science with the mystery of this extremely important transcription factor. The book hits on so many areas of cell and molecular biology in a very understandable and human way that I am even considering adopting it as supplemental reading for my college-level intro to cell biology and genetics course.

Some nice but extraneous minutia of the people involved in p53's discovery, but their achievements and the science of p53 itself are pretty clearly explained. After reading it, you get a good sense of how important p53 is as a target for future cancer therapies. The book makes you realize the complexity of the p53 (and presumably other tumor suppressor gene) pathways. Kevetrin is one compound with promise to target p53. There is already hope.

Interesting story. I am an oncologist (cancer specialist), and so I would have appreciated MORE esoteric detail. I think most careful lay readers would be satisfied with the detail provided, and will understand what was being described in the book. The degree of technical detail remind me of a Stephen Hawkins book on the cosmos.Armstrong does a nice job of describing the history of p53, from its discovery to the present time. It helped me with perspective, and was a very interesting, if not comprehensive review.It is absolutely true that p53 is one of the most important cancer related abnormalities in humans. Unfortunately, it is a tough nut to crack, from a therapeautic standpoint. I think people interested in one of the most important causes of cancer will enjoy this book.

Generally a good overview of recent research involving discoveries about the properties of the p53 gene and its role in repairing damaged cell DNA. I took off one star, however, because the book seemed poorly organized and difficult to follow.

Fascinating biography of the "guardian of the genome" and sheds light on cancer research. I enjoyed it especially read in tandem with the Emperor of all Maladies: a Biography of cancer.

A great book that covers a number of animation techniques and greatas a refresher to the techniques I learned in school but hadn't used inquite some time.

This animation book is the food equivalent of Thanksgiving at a pot-luck, or a buffet. I can sample one bite of everything, end up so full I can't walk. The ingredients and all it's parts are a mystery, but I get to sample the end product. Anotherwords, this book will not teach you how to operate complicated software, such as Photoshop, but it will teach you what software you want to sample. Sort of like going to the video store and reading the captions, but not actually watching the movie, just get an idea for what movie you want to see. Anyway, I really like it and look forward to reading the whole thing. So far I have read chapter 1 and skipped to chapters 23 and 24(about software and hardware), then will return to chapter 2.

This book is a bit dated but most of the info in it is timeless. As a former computer animator, I picked this up out of interest without any expectations. I found it an incredible guide to animation, as complete as you could hope in any book. The author covers all aspects of the art and gives a fairly good rundown of each technique. Its an overview book but a very, very good one.I highly recommend it.

good book but obsolete in technology. The book tells you different methods of making animation besides traditional animation. One the materials they used aren't even on the market no more. Still, the contains a lot of education for alternative method for producing animation....

I once owned the original 1979 edition of this book and missed it for a while. I had been wanting the more modern version of this book anyway. Although it was printed in 1998, it still is relevant. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn the basics of animation drawing, at least. Outdated, but still good. That is why I love this book. Thanks for letting me share.

This is a good starter book on what turtles and tortoises require. It outlines many of the types of turtles and tortoises, has tons of color pictures, and is chock full of info.It goes over habitats, feeding, breeding, hibernation, dangers (fire ants, spinach) etc. including practical tips from the authors.Unfortunately, this book convinced me that it is not very easy to keep turtles and tortoises and this would be a major investment and worry, so I decided not to.Oh well.

Great book to learn about turtles but not so much for Tortoises

When I got my turtle, Tim, I didn't know a thing about turtles - so I got this book as well as did a ton of research online. This book has TONS of good information (and pictures) about how to care for and house turtles. My turtle is several years old now, and is very happy and healthy. I recommend this to anyone who is looking to get a pet turtle. The reality of turtle-keeping is that it is a LOT of work. Turtles are dirty, and even with high powered filters their tanks need constant cleaning. I didn't know what I was getting in to, but it's worth the effort! Turtles are wonderful pets, and this book will give you all the basic information you need to know.
