It makes me sad to see how many reviews are focused on what kind of advice this book had to offer about acquiring more money. The acquisition of material wealth is exactly the opposite of what this book is about. This book is a life-changing manifesto about how to examine our attitudes toward money and material wealth, at an individual and global level. Twist’s decades-long career dealing with money in a number of different cultures and socioeconomic circumstances have given her a unique, paradigm-shattering lens through which to view our unquestioned assumptions about money. Whether your material assets are small, large or somewhere in between, this book can free you from a lifetime of enslavement toward accumulating more (or preserving existing) wealth, and instead point you toward a saner, more fulfilling way of living life and experiencing sufficiency.
I started reading this book in early December and fell in love with it. As a financial professional with a great deal of spiritual experience, I work with my clients on clarifying their relationships with money. I felt like Lynn Twist was speaking to the mind and heart of the issues that keep many of us in a state of fear and scarcity. I wish EVERYONE would read this book and walk away with an expanded world view... one that supports their participation in life with a sense of sufficiency and an appreciation for the benefits collaboration. There is enough - time - love - money - food - everything! We are enough and we can each make a difference. I was so inspired to share this book that I ordered 150 copies, lovingly wrapped each one and tied it with a ribbon, added a card and my holiday letter sharing my appreciation and love for the recipient and our work together, and Priority Mailed all 150 to clients, family and friends over the Holidays. It took me two weeks of continuous focus - the entire time I was immersed in a mission of sharing a message so beautiful and so profound that it made my heart sing! I'm currently reading The Soul of Money a second time and highlighting nearly every page.
With the title "The SOUL of Money", I was expecting something really more about soul or spirit. This book isn't really what I was expecting. I was thinking it was a more metaphysical, new-agey type thing ... but it's really the author talking about herself and her husband and their corporate high-consumption lifestyle and then their non-profit ventures. Kind of pedestrian and not very interesting or enlightening to me.
This book is Awesome and should be on the required reading list.Lynne Twist talks about both difficult and complicated issue of money, our relationship to it and why we chose to treat it in the way that we do - everything from what we subconsciously pick up & digest when we're very young, to what our society dictates is acceptable as we go though life - all too often without questioning much of any of it.Based on her extraordinary experience with individuals and societies with vastly different beliefs and socio-economic status, Lynne shares her observations, what she learned, and her own evolutionary process, all with respect and deep compassion. She provides the reader an insight into far away cultures as well as an insight into one's own heart.
This book isn’t for everyone. No book is. This book, though housed with some insights, was not for me. In my opinion, the audience meant to read The Soul of Money is an audience of wealth, those who already have money and are trying to come to terms with that very wealth, or perhaps where to focus their money e.g. charity, philanthropic ventures, etc. This book is not meant for the middle person, the one who is neither at the bottom nor the top, someone like myself, perhaps even you. It does not offer useful tools designed to help you acquire wealth, better manage your current finances, or any tool on money management for that matter. There is no financial advice here. This book is about the experiences--eventually becoming stories--that the author had over the years in fundraising. It speaks to what those with whom she worked learned about themselves, their perceived state of being (or affairs), and how to shift from a mentality of scarcity to that of sufficiency. See, that’s the part that drew me in--scarcity vs sufficiency--leading me to believe that the book offered something that helped one go from the former to the latter. Not the case. My overall view: If you want to read about various stories that may or may not inspire you in a compassionate way, go for it; however, if you’re looking to learn more about how to navigate your own financial situation, be that to acquire greater monetary outcome or to manage your current financial situation, this isn’t the book. Again, this is for people who already have money and perhaps need a bit of inspiration as to where they can contribute. This is not meant for those who do not have the wealth that allows them to give it away.
I gave it only three stars because it was well written but there was something missing. The author was able to articulate some very good insights about the soul and energy of money. Like some of the other reviewers, I too was hoping for some "Power Tools" so to speak on how to work with the energy of money. I loved how the author described the super wealthy. There are people I know whom she described PRECISELY. The other puts her thoughts together well but by the middle of the book I felt like I was waiting for something that was never going to be delivered which was concrete tools on how to work with the soul of money. I give my respect for sharing what she has learned from dealing with the super rich and the desperately poor.
Was different than what I expected. Still, I experienced a shift that has already brought mental relief, and I'm trying some new things with money. My favorite line was something like, "Take a stand and the money will follow." Incredible stories throughout and warm, conversational tone.
Highly recommended for those of us who are trying to understand the ins and outs of fundraising as a non-profit.
