I just downloaded 2 free books on raising chickens. I'm sitting here in the middle of a winter storm making plans for the coming Spring. This is the year I am taking the plunge and will be raising chickens. This book has been especially helpful in its outline of chicken behavior, diseases, and ways to make money. I think I have a general idea of what to expect behavior wise, though my guess is that it will be somewhat like a book on childrearing....this is what might probably could happen, but let's wait and see what your flock really turns out to be like. The section on disease was also a real heads up in emphasizing how important it is to keep a coop clean. But I don't know yet what if anything needs to be put on the floor of the coop. I hadn't even thought of the possibility of selling the compost, even though I had asked my neighbor for some. On the downside, I wished the author wouldn't have bothered with all the pep talk about raising chickens. If I wasn't interested already I wouldn't have looked at the book. Overall I think this little book gave a quick "birds-eye" view of the process without having to dig through an overwhelming amount of information as I begin my journey.Definitely worth the read. Thanks.

I have been researching as much as I can for my future flock. Once my city alters the nuisance ordinance, I will be able to implement what I've learned. I did gain some new ideas and know better options to keep my hens healthy. I am hoping to have a large organic garden and a few hens to provide free range, true free range, eggs. A bit oversimplified. Also, I've been advised not to wash eggs while this author tells you to do it. Naturally, washing an egg seems reasonable; however, there is a complex explanation why not to. Perhaps Ms. Rossi wanted to avoid introducing complexity.

This book was a great jumping off point. If you are not sure where to start, then start with this book. It's a pretty quick read, and the information it contains will establish a firm foundation. You won't be a chicken expert at the end, but it provokes thoughts that will guide you into further study.

I am looking into getting chickens and I gained some new knowledge from this book, it is interesting and easy to understand. I recommend it as a good read and I will keep and use as a reference. This is a straightforward and substantial anthology: No excess, no nonsense. The book is arranged in chronological order, beginning with Roosevelt's "The Natural Wonder of the Grand Canyon" (May 6, 1903), and ending with Barack Obama's Election-Night Speech (November 5, 2008). While a good deal of the speeches are political, some cover social topics, such as gender rights and religion. Perhaps one might question a few of the selections, but I'm not going impose my own personal opinion on that on the rest of the world. I really love this book. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a while, so of course I have 10+ books and simply relay the information to him. But I thought it would be nice to get a book for him that was written by a dad, for new dads. My husband didn't have siblings or little cousins around him growing up, so he's absolutely clueless when it comes to everything pregnancy and baby.BEST PART: By far, what my husband and I love most about this book is that it doesn't have a sexist overtone. It's not obnoxiously stereotypical like other "dad-to-be" books in that it doesn't assume that every man is a slack-jaw, knuckle-dragging idiot. It's smart and witty. The tone is generally, "Look, here's what's going on and why. It's going to be scary and fun and you'll do great. Just step up, dude." Highly recommended!

I'm writing this at week 22, and I feel phenomenally empowered with knowledge to help me continue preparing to be a first time father. This is an insightful and easy to read "book", I am grateful to have read it and encourage you to do the same. I believe the information is accurate and sincere but at times it can be difficult accepting a source of information if it's also a source of solicitation. Not sure if Adrian's publisher had a choice, bit I would of gladly paid a few more dollars for the content with out the subtle (or not so subtle) advertisements throughout. All in all, still a terrific book for first time dad's.

This seems like a really informative and easy to follow book from the chapters that were read. Unfortunately we lost the baby early, so will hold on to it and hopefully get to experience fully in the future.

Got this for my husband after finding out I was pregnant. He really likes the author’s style and that it breaks up pregnancy into manageable chunks. It goes week by week and gives him a little more insight as to how I’m feeling and what’s going on with baby. His favorite part is that it gives him helpful tasks to do week by week.

My husband is reading this and enjoying it. He said the beginning was a little preachy and he didn’t care for that (because he is super involved in everything- doesn’t need a book telling him how to be involved). But now that he’s on to the weeks he likes how informative it is. He’s read other books that were fun, but this breaks down more of what I’m going through, which he loves.

Just finished the e-book and having been a 3x daddy this book is a God-send. Great insight and funny.

Adrian Kulp’s book manages to be both informative and entertaining. It’s well-organized to help fathers who are in the heart of the process, figure out their role during pregnancy and in the first months after birth. At the same time, it’s clever, funny and artistically beautiful.My kids are 4 and 5 years old, and we don’t plan to have any more (well, I don’t plan to, which is probably not the most important factor). So in one sense, I’m not necessarily the target audience here. But I enjoyed it anyway because it brought back memories I had forgotten. I can also attest to the accuracy of some of the advice that I wish I had heeded. There are numerous examples, but one that stands out is the necessary conversation about who you want in the delivery room – the friends and family dilemma that we didn’t address and should have.I love the various metaphors the author uses, including numerous analogies to sporting events; e.g. comparing the second trimester to running out the clock in a football game.I also enjoyed the “brownie points” section in many of the chapters, which detail some things I just didn’t know about during my wife’s pregnancies and after; a push gift and bra shopping are a few examples.I’m sure there have been books written from the Dad’s perspective. I don’t think there have been any books that put it all together this well. It’s a very busy and frankly overwhelming time, and you’re really flying blind a bit especially with your first child. A guide that’s easy to use and actually enjoyable, is something all new dads should have. And for those who have closed shop, if you’re looking to feel some nostalgia and be entertained at the same time, this book is a great choice as well.

I bought this for my husband since we just found out that I am pregnant with our first. I read through a little bit of it before I gave it to him, and it seems like a great resource. It has eased my anxiety that he has a book to help him understand what I am going through so he can help me a little more. He likes that it is broken down week by week and that it even has stuff for after the baby is born.
