Have you ever driven through a historic mountain town like Golden, Colorado, seen the scars extending straight up the side of a mountain and wondered about them? I have many times, and now feel grateful that author Barb Warden has taken the time to address my curiosity. Those scars indicate the former locations of funiculars, near-vertical, counterbalanced railways constructed to get people and goods to and from the tops of mountains.This is a great little book for tourists to Golden or Colorado, historians and rail enthusiasts. I live near Golden, am geeky about local history and love this book. It is easy to read, with enough historical detail to be interesting without going overboard. The text is supplemented by relevant, old newspaper articles that are quite entertaining.I would like readers of this review to note that I was mature enough to not say this book "puts the fun in funiculars" in my title, but immature enough to put it here. Silliness aside, I stand by the statement.
