I have been designing inverters (primarily for xEV’s) since 1997. This week, an enthusiastic young engineer joined my team. He stated that before digging into details of the inverter, he wanted a broad overview of the entire electrical propulsion system. Had he joined prior to the appearance of the book “Electric Powertrain: Energy Systems, Power Electronics and Drives for Hybrid, Electric and Fuel Cell Vehiclesâ€, I would have wished him good luck piecing together such diverse information. Fortunately for my young colleague, the book was recently published. Until reading this book, I had shamefully little understanding of the overall electric powertrain. It took me just three weeks to eat this book up from front to back. It taught me SO MUCH!The authors don’t simply spit out facts. Their information is supported by math, but is conveyed in a manner that facilitates intuitive understanding. They have included critical equations that are incredibly useful to practicing engineers. (I have only seen a few of these published before, scattered in obscure technical papers.) Fortunately, much understanding can be derived by those who’s math skills are rusty (or nonexistent). I consider this the second best book in my extensive library of technical books. Highly recommended!
