This book contains very nice patterns for tatting snowflakes. I have made several of the designs and the instructions were easy to understand and follow. I particularly like the three-dimensional snowflakes.

I love tatting and snowflakes are my passion...not a lot of time investment so I don't get bored and the results are spectacular. Love the designs in this booklet. I did find a couple of omissions / errors, but even a novice could work around the ones I found.

This is a shuttle Tatting book. Good to know. Love the history included at the beginning of the book. Good instructions. I highly recommend if you want to make some beautiful snowflakes.

The patterns in this book are very pretty, and make wonderful gifts as Christmas Tree ornaments. Consider these designs when you start to think about the gifts you want to give to the special people on your Christmas List!Think about making one, single pattern every year, for each of your children. And the next year, another pattern.Tatted ornaments make wonderful heirloom gifts to give to your children so that they can collect them every year, and when they're grown up, they can take them to hang on their own (grown-up) Christmas Trees!

It is great if I have time on my hands to accomplish something and this gives me some patterns I can take with me along with my tatting tools. this book of tatted snowflakes has a great range of snowflakes. from small simple ones to elegant difficult ones. the patterns are written well and easy to explain. i recommend this book for tatters of all skill level because it has simple ones then they could work their way up, great book and i definitely recommend this.... also another note... don't let the pictures discourage you! some of them don't look too inspiring... remember you are able to exclude outer rounds sometimes and create new ones... don't get hung up on the photos like i did...get this book

Made everyone I know a snowflake ornament. The instructions are clear and good. Some very nice patterns. Only complaint is that the photos don't fall next to the title of the pattern. I worked around it just fine, but it was a little hard to pick a pattern. Or if the index had all the photos with pattern names..

With the title containing National Geographic, I had high expectations for this book. I am eagerly learning about Landscape Photography and wanted a book tilled with the technical details that would allow me to approach a certain level of professionalism in my photos.Here's what you should know before buying this book:1. The digital portion is only a few pages in the back. The book was clearly adapted from the film version of the book. When people started crying for digital info, they just stuck a few pages on.2. The digital portion is also incorrect or misleading (shockingly). Here's one example from page 126: "More pixels usually means finer detail, and this holds true for both compact cameras and SLR's." Well...this isn't really true. It's the marketing hype that camera manufacturers are pushing. In reality, it's a combination of the size of the sensor, the megapixels and the ISO speed you set, along with the quality of the lens that means finer detail. If you squeeze 10 megapixels onto a tiny sensor, all you get is more noise.3. 95% of the book is just talking about EXTREMELY basic stuff. Ie: The rule of thirds, including an "S" shape in your compositions, shoot at sunrise or sunset, etc.4. This is the biggie for me: THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO TECHNICAL INFORMATION ABOUT HOW ANY PICTURE IN THE BOOK IS MADE. Other books, such as the excellent National Audubon Society Guide to Landscape Photography, include camera and exposure info, plus which filters are used and even how the filters are oriented in their holder! Filling a book with pretty pictures (as NG's guide does) teaches me nothing. Telling me how to orient and expose using a Graduated Neutral Density filter (a la Audubon Guide) will allow me to duplicate their results!This book was a complete waste of money due to the above reasons.

I try to be very fair to business books, but I didn't even finish reading this one because it was so elementary and ridiculous. I almost vomited after reading the words "execute" and "execution" a hundred times in the first chapter.This is one of many books written by formerly successful business people who feel the need (for posterity and/or outright arrogance) to take a five-page concept and spread it out over a few hundred pages.If you can master this simple principle, you don't need to read this book: Once you have a great plan or idea, you need to implement it effectively. To not effectively implement your great plan or idea, is a waste of a good plan or idea.That's it folks. The rest of this book is double-talk and business "war stories". The rest of the book is so pointless, you'd be better off spending the time with your family, or reading a different book.

This is severely dated at this point, and their knowledge of how IBM was run under Sam Palmisano is woefully incorrect. If you can ignore the first 3rd of the book, the other two thirds focusing on strategy and people processes are great. They all have to be in sync to move forward, but gone are the days of the line manager being pushed down from above to make all the decisions, instead it is up to the players to make the decisions.

For the Christmas Holidays, as we were packing the ski stuff from the basement before we left to VT, I chanced upon some books lying there, and noticed the one titled 'Execution,' by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan which I had bought almost 8 years ago but never got around to reading it. On a whim, I decided to take it with me and ended up reading it through these holidays.A quick caveat to put aside. I do wish folks would not use company names as examples in books. The original one of these, "In Search of Excellence" by Tom Peters did that. So did Jim Collins in "Good to Great". And this book does it too. What happens is that the authors use some company as an example to cite either a good or a bad practice. And a decade has passed and things have changed (perhaps 180 degrees). And that induces a chuckle in addition to both dating the book and casting doubt on the claim.However, at least for this book, 'Execution', the above is only a caveat, since I found the book quite meaningful. The reason I perhaps did not read it when I first bought it many years ago is that it felt genuinely elementary. I was at the peak of my strategy work and when you are working on projects that are either reshaping a company or positioning oneself in new markets, the discipline of execution seems not only boring, but downright waste of time (not the importance of it mind you, but rather spending time thinking or reading about it).However, now that I have moved on from the strategy function myself and am in a line management role with accountability for business results and accountability for a team and partner-relationships to deliver those results, I view this book in an entirely new light!To share a personal reaction as I read this book ( a feeling I have not had since when I sat for my twelfth grade board examination!) - when I thought about implementing the ideas that Larry and Ram were talking about in their book on Tuesday morning Jan 2nd when I return to work, my stomach tightens into a knot! The level of sustained focus, discipline, follow through, attention to detail they expect in execution is non-trivial to say the least. Again, conceptually easy to grasp; but quite daunting if one thinks about putting them into real practice on a sustained basis throughout an organization!Very briefly, they touch upon the strategic, people and operational processes as three core processes that are building blocks for execution and show how the three are related to each other. And through their experience and examples demonstrate how to implement each of these effectively. One particular insight that I liked that Larry made in particular was, 'just because an executive is good in her current job, does not mean she is ready or capable for the next'. Which is similar to what our Chairman says, "do the job you have been assigned, not your previous one."Of course with a background in engineering (and manufacturing to boot), this whole notion of execution and organizing to execute is not alien to me at all. And in reality, my immersion for a long time in strategic work was what I needed to be more lithe in my thinking. However executing by one self or with a small team in a localized way on a specific deterministic engineering problem is one challenge. But to do the same with large revenues and large teams at stake and working through your teams through other teams with high week-to-week dependence on market conditions is another challenge.This timely book was very worthwhile spending time with. Dated examples notwithstanding, one of the more immediately useful and relevant books in the business genre that I have read in a long time.

The leader must embrace this role and thrive in it to ensure proper execution of the strategy and operations.The combination of people and strategy lead to an operating plan, in which the execution takes place. This plan needs to be realistic, ambitious, resourced, specific and accountable. The authors note that this piece is often the art that falls short - where the operating plan is divorced from the strategy and people - and the execution suffers.The book has critical questions and suggestions for the leader, and provides a platform for thought that is focused on getting things done rather than just the what and who theory of planning. An important read.

I got this book hoping for helpful ideas on how to debug multithreaded programs. This book has them, but the writing isn't that clear or readable. It reads like a grad. level paper more than a standard technical book that most of us are used to.The book lightly covers standard multithreading concepts and objects, but you're better off learning those someplace else because I'm sure it's explained in more "laymen" terms elsewhere. The one thing this book does do well is offer a way for you to write mutexes, semaphores, monitors, etc. in a way that would allow you to replay a given run of a multithreaded program (assuming you also can reproduce the input to said program somehow). If you know how to debug a single threaded application, this ability makes it easier to debug a multithreaded program. (As things become determisitic.)However, if you already have a program that you're trying to debug, you end up out of luck, unless you want to port your program to use these new libraries.Also note that all the examples in this book are for C++ or Java. C doesn't have the object-oriented abilities that would be needed to easily use the examples.

I can't emphasize how excellent this book is. It not only goes to great lengths to explain the intricacies of how MultiThreading works, but it also cleverly shows how things can go wrong. It also provides algorithms for synchronizing events without creating deadlocks.Highly recommended.

this book is awesome and also very clear to understand, it help you fix very common mistakes with real life examples. all the code is focused on a common classes between C++/java, the only cons is this book don't use linux pthreads instead use win32 version of pthreads so be carefull because the examples on their website won't compile in linux without adjustment.

This book is simply excellent. I have already completed my bachelors degree in Computer Science, which means I only had a basic understanding of threading from my Distributed Computing class. So, I knew a whole bunch of thread jargon and slightly understood how threads are created and what the critical section problem is, as well as a basic understanding of how semaphores can solve the problem. Beyond that, the book has taught me what goes on behind the scenes of thread creation and why critical sections can be so complicated. The average Computer Science student is not interested in how it works behind the scenes, only how to make it work for their current needs. This book, while useful to a more adept coder, will not quickly and easily fulfill that requirement. It is definitely geared toward those that are really serious about multithreading and intend to test/use their threading knowledge over and over again. If that is you and you don't really understand threading too well, this book can take you from novice to expert in only a few months.I'd definitely recommend it to my co-workers!

As a Java engineer, I cannot really recommend this book. While the authors are definitely knowledgeable about their subject, they do not do a good job in communicating their knowledge to a reader. The book reads like a doctoral thesis, poorly organized, not well laid out. Brian Goetz book on Concurrency is a much better book.

Even though title suggests it is 'modern multithreading', this book reiterates typical multithreading issues. However subjects addressed are not presented well enough and code snippets are not explained properly.

I think it was a pretty decent writing but certain parts can be hard to follow and i thought a combination of code + graphics would make it an even better read

Absolutely love this cookbook! I made Martha's basic brownie recipe recently and received so many compliments. I highly recommend. As a note, the measurements are all in grams and there are some ingredients that appear to be unusual. Many of these are simply called something different in the united states: example double cream = heavy cream. I suggest googling any ingredients that you aren't familiar with as you may have most of these in your kitchen as well as purchasing a scale for measuring in grams as grams does not convert easily to cups (one unit measures volume, one mass). The only ingredient I found throughout the recipes that might be slightly less common in a US household or grocery store are digestive biscuits, which can be purchased on Amazon for around $8.The cookbook itself is incredibly well made, easy to follow and has a lot of great information on the science behind each bake.

Martha Collison has been my favorite baker on "GBBO" and her book is jaw droppingly gorgeous. Being state-side, the recipes are novel and there are some conversions to be done, but that's easily handled. The pictures are outstanding. Do not read when hungry.

This book is great! I got it for Christmas and have made a few of the bakes and they turned out amazing! I have only recently started baking so I am quite amateurish, but Martha does a phenomenal job at explaining the recipes in great detail and even going into some of the science of baking at times, which I find extremely helpful. It is a very well written book.

The book is very nice with photos of all of the recipes. I made the Apricot Pistacio Cake and it turned out delicious!

Love the concept of this book. have 1 good base recipe and developing many other recipes from the base.

The book is so well thought out, it starts with 'basic' recipes that you can modify in so many different ways. Twist is easy to follow and has yielded amazing results thus far. Whether you are an amateur or experienced baker, I think you'll find the recipes and flavors unique and refreshing. In love with this book; can't wait for Crave to come out!

I am obsessed with the Great British Baking Show. Martha was one of my favorite contestants. Her recipes are absolutely gorgeous, and fun to make. One of my favorite purchases.

Love this cookbook. Lots of wonderful, fun recipes everyone will enjoy. The book arrived promptly and was in excellent condition. A++ seller and author!

The text is supplemented by relevant, old newspaper articles that are quite entertaining.I would like readers of this review to note that I was mature enough to not say this book "puts the fun in funiculars" in my title, but immature enough to put it here. Silliness aside, I stand by the statement.

I have been designing inverters (primarily for xEV’s) since 1997. This week, an enthusiastic young engineer joined my team. He stated that before digging into details of the inverter, he wanted a broad overview of the entire electrical propulsion system. Had he joined prior to the appearance of the book “Electric Powertrain: Energy Systems, Power Electronics and Drives for Hybrid, Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles”, I would have wished him good luck piecing together such diverse information. Fortunately for my young colleague, the book was recently published. Until reading this book, I had shamefully little understanding of the overall electric powertrain. It took me just three weeks to eat this book up from front to back. It taught me SO MUCH!The authors don’t simply spit out facts. Their information is supported by math, but is conveyed in a manner that facilitates intuitive understanding. They have included critical equations that are incredibly useful to practicing engineers. (I have only seen a few of these published before, scattered in obscure technical papers.) Fortunately, much understanding can be derived by those who’s math skills are rusty (or nonexistent). I consider this the second best book in my extensive library of technical books. Highly recommended!
